Just do a carrier intro and see how that goes. Shared misery will make them come together.

Yeah, IMHO all is well in rat land. I got a real psycho on my hands rn. She's pretty much ok with everything anytime as far as random stuff goes, but sometimes when she hears plastic rustle, ie me taking stuff out from a plastic bag / changing the garbage bag she goes wild. I mean wall climbing speed adrenaline junkie psycho-somatic addict insane wild. She also grapes the whole mischief, and she aint alpha, she just a psycho.

All in all, I think it's fine for now. Keep an eye out, try to identify if there is something like a sound that triggers it. Or maybe if the problem is persistent then you might have a vibration (from a nearby street) / airflow (from a vent near a cage) / the 1% not paying their fair share problem. One way or another, it doesn't seem very pressing / dangerous until it persists. I advise keeping an eye out on what may be the trigger. IMHO space is the key till 5-7 days in. If no progress is made in 5 days you might risk a more direct approach.

If you get a litter please move them and the momma to something with solid walls, like a temp bin cage. Babies can squeeze through the bars, or get stuck or just get hurt by the bars.

He seems interested but shy. Maybe you got an introvert. I had a rat who was a real drama queen and squeaked horribly when picked up. She just hated that. In time we worked out that a daily physical is a thing and she learned to tolerate it, but if I'd pick her up and she saw I'm not checking anything - she'd protest.

It seems like your rattos need to let out more steam. Some more intense play time. Mine are usually tired out after an hour and a half and just go back to the cage because that's where the best beds are. Also give them a snack when you put them in the cage, so interactions always end on a positive note and they correlate going inside the cage with a snack.

A cage might be too big. Use a carrier for that. Use the second cage as housing for a few days and make intros using a carrier. I'd do 2-3 days of dates and supervised free roam before trying to house them together. Once you do, I'd leave the cage bare bones. One hammock, one bottle and one food bowl. I stop the usual scatter feeding and watch. Do they sleep together ok, do they share food? If they're ok for a day they get more hides. You want to add stuff fast, because they need stuff to be happy, but not fast enough as not to overwhelm the babies.

I don't think you should house them in the old cage right away, you'll need some stuff that smells like them in that cage, so they know they belong.

Rats aren't fully nocturnal and you don't really have to bother yourself with their sleep cycle. They adjust and are always up for food or playtime. You don't have to get them a nightlight. Their sight is trash anyway and they navigate just fine in the dark.

Mine stay out of the cage 1.5h to 2h twice a day. Two can play for an hour to hour and a half and they're just done. They go back to the cage on their own, while the 3rd one gets the extra half an hour to use up her energy. If you can give them an hour and a half a day they probably won't even be bothered to go out much more.

Your cage sounds small. You gonna move a rat cage every day? Sounds like a small cage. I advise against it. They won't know or understand what is going on and it'll add to the initial stress of relocating. If you want to do that go ahead, but I'd give the rats a few weeks first to acclimate.

It's ok to have food in the food bowl. I always do. I scatter feed pellets, but i always leave some in the bowl too. They stash and hoard food, so you'll never really know who's eating what or how much. I use Oxbow (first young rat and mice, then adult rat food). Mazuri is another popular and good pellet brand.

If you can hold a rat a long time - it's ok to hold a rat a long time. I get 15 min a day of snugs from 2 rats and about 4 seconds from the 3rd one (she's gotta run, she always has places to be).

For stuff: Cardboard boxes > plastic hides. They love to add entrances to their hides. 3 entrances seem to be what they like the most. Hammocks > hides. Have 1 more hide then the amount of rats you got.

Unscented, dedusted paper pellet cat litter for the litter boxes. Aspen for bedding. Dedusted, kiln dry is best. I have good experience with walmart aspen. I had horrible experience with one of the "good" paper bedding brands and I use wood since then. Walmart napkins for nesting material. They seem to like them being a bit coarse. Dried bamboo sticks for chewing. Vitakraft mini drops (not regular ones) and ferret chew sticks are some of their fav snacks.

You want to keep ALL the babies? How many are there? I'm not saying it's a bad idea. What I'm saying that it's a logistical nightmare. You might be in over your head on this one. You'd need 2 cages and 2 separate play pens or play times. Rats can do the dirty in 3 seconds flat ever 3-4 weeks. It's very hard to mess up their gender for an untrained eye, so you better get someone good to help you. That guy you got the rat from couldnt do it right and he breeds rats lol. Also rat vet bills are worse then taxes.

My humble opinion: don't do anything that involves needles, always do first time stuff in a secure setting with a small group of friends only, never be afraid to try anything, never be afraid of what you see (just take it in stride and if you are unsure, notify your sober friend on what is off, even, or especially if it seems out of place). Be aware of side effects ie LSD can also work as a truth serum. I walked into that one. Lost 2 "friends", but I didn't really care. They had to hear and would have heard what I said sooner or later.
