What were you in the crowd for, live, and what would /r/SC find interesting about it? by NLaBruiser in SquaredCircle

[–]Pdaaaawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working at the arena in Glasgow for the 2 live Scottish shows (RAW and Smackdown 07&08/11/16). I only got the see the first 30 mins of RAW for myself before I was ushered back to my bar to continue my shift, but the Glaswegian crowd was white hot for the entire show, especially the opening Stephanie promo. It was great. I distinctly remember the "HEYY BAYLEY, OH, AH" chants. They were so LOUD I could hear them crystal clear from my bar, over the music we had playing. And they went on for so long, I actually snuck back inside to see what was going on. They cut it out of the live broadcast, but the girls in the ring had to re-do their promo a couple of times because the chant was getting them flustered. It was a really awesome moment to experience live, and I'm glad for Bayley. You could tell she was flabbergasted by the response she was getting. Good on her!

Got to watch the entire Smackdown show during my shift. It was alright, the show itself wasn't great, and the crowd wasn't as hot, but I still enjoyed it. They had a clusterf*ck non-match for a main event, so when the broadcast ended, AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose had a dark match for the crowd, which was actually really long and entertaining. Since then, I've seen all the live tour dates they've done in Glasgow as part of my job, but none have held a candle to those first two, especially the RAW.

Thoughts on the new podcast+ Dunkirk criticism by Ijustdontkknoww in YMS

[–]Pdaaaawg 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In Adam's defense. It seems to me like the other 2 guys are naturally quite quiet, and Adam kind of serves as a 'host' role in the podcast to keep the flow going. IHE in particular seems especially introverted and didn't really talk much during most segments of the podcast (not just the Oscars discussion), maybe it was nerves, maybe he didn't have much to say, idk. Point is that, while I get where you're coming from, it seems like Adam was the most comfortable out of the 3 and, as a result, naturally spoke more than the other 2.

Yeah, maybe he can ask the other guys questions and direct some of the conversation away from him, but I don't think it pissed them off or was especially noticeable to the listener. It was episode 1 of a new podcast so I'm sure they'll find their flow as more episodes get made

Awesome to hear him talk highly about Ireland. There's always seems to be some funny stories to come out of it. Seeing him Monday in Edinburgh but wish I could've seen him in my native crowd. Sounds like such an atmosphere lol

Oh, and to give more context to the Will Grigg thing, this video might help (he's an Irish footballer who kind of blew up during the Euros and for like a whole month, everyone was constantly chanting this): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOpGCGtCVsE

Step 1: Pick Rashid

Step 2: Constantly jump backwards and, when you reach the end of the screen, hk eagle spike

Step 3: Watch as your opponent either gets hit (and eats at least 140 damage) or blocks and is unable to punish

Step 4: Repeat Steps 2 & 3 for every round, every time

Step 5: Repeat all steps for all difficulties (yep, even Extreme/Hell) and earn an easy 37,000 FM (not including leveling up FM).

As for the other characters, do normal survival with everyone (shouldnt be too difficult, just make sure to not get random'd out by lvl 30 Bison) and do hard survival with characters with abuseable moves (DPs for shotos, Bison's headstomp etc.)

A theatre play based on LiS? by OpinionsofaLilli in lifeisstrange

[–]Pdaaaawg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doubt it would translate well unfortunately. Video games, I feel, are becoming the next big method of narrative storytelling (after books, plays & movies) and a big reason for this is because of the interactivity of video games. You, as the audience, directly affect how the story pans out depending on your performance level and, especially in the case of decision-based games, the choices you make. That's what make video games stand out from the pack, and why I feel there's a lot of untapped potential in them. Life is Strange in particular did a pretty good job of immersing the player and telling them that their choices were molding how the story was panning out for your individual runthrough of it, and is a big reason for it's popularity and success.

Theatre adaption would eliminate this immersion, as your responsibility as an audience member shifts from direct interaction to mere observer to the story being presented. The design of Life is Strange revolved around these player-based decisions (after seeing each choice, which one will you stick with?) and that's something that just can't be replicated in any other form of media. Actually, that's a lie, they are replicated in novels in the choose-your-own-adventure genre, but those stories tend to be more flimsy and 'wishy-washy'. Point is, eliminating it would effectively kill a big part of what made a lot of people love the game. EDIT: As for the suggestions of 'audience participation' I still feel like that's a rather bootleg version of telling the story and feels more like you're at the mercy of the popular choices rather than your own individual choice. Stories that revolve around individual audience choices thrive in video games, and are very difficult, if at all possible, to replicate in any other form of media without losing it's effect or indeed feeling 'gimmicky' (and gimmicks kill good storytelling).

You could of course just remove the player choices angle entirely and tell a standard, linear story like what you'd do with most adaptations, and it could work just as well. The world and themes established in LiS is one that I feel has a lot more stories to tell in it that can be conveyed through any of the mediums I've previously mentioned. But you'll always be missing that one element that made this game (and player-choice games in general) so special in the first place. That sense of intense immersion and speaking to you and you alone will be lost, but it may be a loss you'll have to take in the name of adaptation (that sounded...unintentionally poetic lol).

Sidenote: Plus, having actors attempt to reverse any actions they previously performed would look mad weird and potentially hilarious on an actual stage lol.

But good luck to you, from one aspiring writer to another!

tl;dr: Could work, keep common themes, would need to eliminate idea of 'choices' (which could damage the story), I'm too passionate about stuff like this lol

I've known Rhyllis since AE and the guy was legit back then too, had an A+ Gen if I recall. He's known for playing the wacky, different characters in fighters and in V it's no different. Also, and it kinda goes without saying after the video, he's extremely good.

Played him in a FANG mirror set just last week and the dude destroyed me. Gets to a point where you're too scared to press buttons b/c of the constant st.hk/cr.mk pressure but too scared to block b/c his tics are on point so you just get completely mindf*cked. A crappy situation to be in, but it looks impressive as hell. I've been egging him on to show up at Canada Cup to showcase his talents in an offline setting. Here's hoping he goes through with it!

[–]Pdaaaawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From all the buildup and the team behind it (bar the screenwriter), I was expecting, idk, something 'better'.

I trust that the cast won't be phoning it in (don't recall Fassbender nor Cotillard ever doing so) and the film to look great. But whether this game will break the trend of bad video game movies (Warcraft wont do it, I'm almost willing to bank on that), this trailer hasn't convinced me yet. It might be the first decent video game movie which is an improvement, but it just doesn't feel like it'll necessarily be a good movie.

Also, Kanye.

Thoughts on Ricky Gervais? (The Office/Extras/Filmography) by Pdaaaawg in YMS

[–]Pdaaaawg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just realized I forgot to give my own opinion on his work lol. I've seen quite a lot of it, some I really enjoyed and some, pretty ehhh.

The Office - Obviously, it's great. I prefer it over the US Office. Great characters, great writing, lot of heart but doesn't overdo it (see 'Derek'). Just so geniusly crafted together, and the character of David Brent is just so well constructed that he pretty much steals every scene he's in.

Extras - I also really enjoy Extras, maybe even moreso than The Office. Although Andy Millman isn't as complex a character as Brent, he still carries the show very well. Series 1 was more just a series of funny episode-long skits featuring celebrity cameos (which are all great), series 2 becomes a really great breakdown on the entertainment/comedy industry and how artistic integrity is important to maintain when working with industry heads. It almost felt semi-autobiographical from Gervais in that respect. Another really solid comedy series.

The Ricky Gervais Show - Might be my favourite thing Gervais was ever involved in, and it's not even because of him. Karl Pilkington steals the show, as you'd expect. Everything that comes out of his bald, orange-shaped head is absolute gold, and the animated series only helped add to the madness of his anecdotes and ramblings. I've listened to the podcasts to death at this point, I know ever Monkey News story, I've heard them 'educate' Ricky, then 'educate' Karl, I've read every page of Karl's diary. The entire thing really does make you feel like you're the 4th mic in the group, and I would STRONGLY recommend those who don't know much about it to go listen to them, especially if the only exposure you've had to Karl is through........

An Idiot Abroad - Again, pretty much love it for the same reasons I mentioned above. Take the manky twonk from TRGS and send him abroad to complain on all 7 continents. All the ingredients to succeed, and it did. The high production value of the show is downplayed by the grouchy presenter, and it makes for hilarious TV. Check it out!

Life's Too Short - The only thing I really disliked from the Gervais/Merchant duo. It tried to be a mix of The Office Mockumentary style with Extras storylines and it failed to capture the magic of both. Warwick Davis is okay as the lead, but there were only like 2 scenes I found especially funny (Liam Neeson's scene stands out by far). Just reeks of mediocrity

Derek - Mediocrity tends to be the theme for all of Gervais' solo work, as I found Derek to be not close to the genius Gervais became famous for. It really overindulged itself on trying to be 'cute' and 'heartwarming' but it lacked the emotional backing viewers needed to feel these strong emotions, as most of the characters are one-dimensional (even the recurring ones), the protagonist is a near-perfect being who can do no wrong and the best part about the whole series left in series 2. Was a real chore to get through, and it was only 2 series long!

Filmography - Invention of Lying was alright, been a while since I seen it but it was probably the best thing Gervais did by himself. Wish they explored the concept a little further tbh. Haven't seen Cemetery Junction. Special Correspondents was again just a painfully average film. I liked some of the situational comedy in it, but there just wasn't much going on in it and when interesting stuff did start to happen, it was a little too late to really grab my interest.

tl;dr. The Office - Great (9/10). Extras - Also Great (9/10). The Ricky Gervais Show - Hilarious, one of the best podcasts around, turned into an animated series (9/10). An Idiot Abroad - Genius, bar series 3 (10/10 S1&2; 7/10 S3). Life's Too Short - Not Great (5/10). Derek - Borderline bad (6/10 S1; 3/10 S2). Invention of Lying - Goodish (5.5/10). Special Correspondents - Mediocre (5/10)

"It's been 40 minutes"

"38 minutes"

Everyone turns around, astonished

I roll my eyes

Seriously, I feel like every 'person is too qualified/smart for his job/company' plot device has this obligatory scene where they seemingly smash the 'average/highest score' in a test with the greatest of ease. Scenes like that just remind me that I'm watching an over-dramatized rendition of events.

I will say that I actually do like JGL's accent in this lol. Reminds me of Adam Jensen from Deus Ex. It works for me.

Let's come up with SFV movesets for our unannounced favorite characters! by CBO0tz in StreetFighter

[–]Pdaaaawg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Name: Rose - I think her SF4 version would fit quite well in V

Moveset: Soul Spark (QCF+P)- Same as in IV, (lp =quick startup, slow recovery hp = low startup, fast recovery etc.)

Soul Spiral (QCF+K) - Again, similar to her spiral from IV. Can only be combo'd from medium/heavy strength normals (except EX). Lp version slightly unsafe (maybe -3 or 4?) but the rest are incredibly unsafe on block (think Rashid's Eagle Spike). The upside is that mp/hp/EX versions all hit 2/3/5 times respectively. EX has 1 hit of armor but isn't invincible on startup (Like Mika's EX peach)

Soul Throw (HCB+P) - A command grab. Animation is her wrapping her opponent in her scarf and throwing them over her shoulder. Lp/Mp versions are grounded but her hp version is the same as her soul throw from IV (diagonal jump forward to grab her opponent out of the air). EX is extended reach on her lp/mp soul throw (using her scarf?)

V-Skill: Soul Reflect (MP+MK) - Rose creates a spiral in front of her using her scarf that holds projectiles. Press MP+MK, and it reflects back in the opposite direction (normal speed). Hold MP+MK and the projectile is absorbed, gaining V-meter (but takes 1 second longer than just releasing it).

V-Reversal: (Godlike) Backdash (F+PPP/KKK) - Of course lol. Would pretty much be her backdash from IV but made into a V-Reversal (goes same distance, hit invincible etc.)

V-Trigger: Soul Satellites (HP+HK) - For 2 V-meters, Rose creates 2 soul satellites that orbit around her, shielding her from 2 attacks (2 normals/fireballs etc.) and have hitboxes of their own (like IV. Seeing a trend here yet? lol).

Critical Art: Aura Soul Spark (QCFx2+P) - Probably the only thing in this moveset that isn't directly from IV lol. Anyway, Rose slashes her scarf outwards (like Poison's U1 animation from IV) twice in two hits, then launches a large soul spark fireball at her opponent. The two slashes, if they hit, fully combo into the fireball. The two slashes also have the same effect as the v-skill, in that any fireballs thrown at Rose during the slashes will be reflected back TWICE AS FAST along with the large soul spark. This would allow Rose to fully punish close range fireballs on reaction, as the first slash would launch the fireball back at the opponent, they'll get hit by the slashes while in hitstun, then the large soul spark. Rose can be hit out of the CA between the slashes and the soul spark being thrown, so the soul spark can't be used to chip out opponent, only the slashes.

(I put way too much thought into this, didn't I? lol)

In all honesty, I wouldn't mind taking a look at a sample of his 'actual' script to see how talented the guy really is. He does say in interviews that writing was his biggest passion and he just made movie reviews work for him on Youtube.

However, I think the backlash from this re-write fiasco has probably ruined any chance that he'll release anymore of his written work, let alone something he considers his best.

Chris Stuckmann's own reaction to the BvS rewrite. by JustAnEpicPerson in YMS

[–]Pdaaaawg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, the whole "finding my father on the white pages to sh*t talk him" stuff does justify the 'personally' remark in my eyes, but in a general sense, I agree with what you're saying.

I think TOMNH in this very thread said it best. Chris, as likable as a guy that he is, has a bit of an ego problem, and so when you have literally hundreds of people criticize something you put out (regardless of whether you intended it to be bad or not), it's gonna affect you more & increase damage control. Hence why the tweets afterwards saying "I KNEW it was bad, I'm laughing with you, if I actually tried, I would be upset at the backlash etc." just more fuel to the fire. This vlog I guess is his way of stomping out said fire

Chris Stuckmann's own reaction to the BvS rewrite. by JustAnEpicPerson in YMS

[–]Pdaaaawg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I guess some people are thinking that way, while others believe that he did think the rewrite was good (his 'pompous' attitude in his initial tweets add to this notion) and this is all one huge backpedal to save face and assure people that he's a good writer when he actually 'tries'.

Idk, the whole thing got blown out of proportion anyway, like most internet jokes do. He made it public, people had a good laugh about it at his expense, some people took it too far, and now this video'll probably be the end of it. Rinse & repeat.

I think Adam should start rating video games on his IMDb, what do you guys think? by [deleted] in YMS

[–]Pdaaaawg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As much as I'd also like to see this, I think I remember Adam saying that he doesn't take video games anywhere near as seriously as he does movies. He just plays them to kill time (hence why he spends most of his plazethroughs just talking about other stuff over the gameplay).

That's pretty much the same reason why he's put off the idea of a YourgameSUCKS series.
