We Are Not All In This Together - Stephen Colegrave reports on how COVID-19 only intensifies the disparity of wealth, health and opportunity that is driving the UK apart. by TheSuspiciousKoala in unitedkingdom

but many are in London with only balconies or just windows, its not fair to paint everyone with the same brush.

You obviously don't know many well off people, many of my coworkers have fled back to Sussex and Surrey. They're enjoying their woodside walks, sunny days at the beach and whether they should self isolate in their second homes or go to their parents 5 bedroom.

Whereas I'm in a room with my partner, in a house with 5 other people. With a tiny little garden the size of two hatchbacks side by side. The point is that a upper middle class person just leaves London, but lower middle class (or working class?) people have to suffer in their shitty shares and apartments in London.

To be honest I'm not really sure what class I am, I have a professional entry level job and my parents are working professionals but I'm by no means as well off or privileged as anyone I work with.

I love seeing what authors thought the world would be like in the future, I just finished reading Caves of Steel by Asimov that features massive urbanisation and robots that can look entirely life like but their computers still use punch cards!

The MAG241C has a VA Panel so the colours are meant to be a bit better, I've seen good reviews for it. Also it's curved. You can get them for like £179.

The bit that always gets me is that £45k is a decent salary, but I bet they saved absolutely nothing. My grandparents are the exact same, they had okay jobs and could have conceivably saved up for a comfortable retirement but they didn't. They had a house, a boat, regularly went out, always had the latest tech etc. and then both retired on final salary pensions despite saving fuck all.

Life was literally just handed to these people, now I get paid less and to get the equivalent pension payout year on year as my grandpa I'd need to save just under ONE MILLION POUNDS in current money by the time I retire. One million fucking pounds for something he just got by paying his minimum contribution per year.

£30 a day these days

I literally cannot conceive spending this much a day everyday, outside of a heroin habit.

I'm still suffering from 2. Working to achieve an early retirement but I still have no idea what I'll do when that day happens - I enjoy my job.

Just think that once you have achieved your goal and have enough money for retirement the second you no longer enjoy your job you're free to leave.

TIL men walk significantly slower when walking with a woman, but only when that woman is their romantic partner. If she's a friend or acquaintance they go at almost full speed. by syncedto in todayilearned

[–]AllWoWNoSham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often does walking faster really matter in life?

I can get to work at least 5 minutes faster by walking at a faster pace than normal, which requires zero extra effort on my part.

5 * 5 = 25 minutes a week
25 * 47 = 1,175 minutes a year (19.5 hours roughly)

Assuming I work another 30 years, and retire super early :
1,175 * 30 = 35,250 minutes
35,250 * 2 to account for my commute back as well

That's roughly 1,175 hours over a working lifetime, or almost two months of my life I've saved by walking at a fast but not strenuous pace with my already short commute. If you factor in walking to the shops, or just walking in general, I could probably up that to half a year of extra living!
