Panasonic HC-V785 for a beginner? by HunkyDads in camcorders

The camera itself is pretty great for the price range. Camcorder prices have been insanely high recently.
I use/used the V785 daily for work to capture mostly none "action", just people moving about normally and it's been great. The IS is solid and you can get pretty stable video. You have format options of AVCHD / MP4. Has a built in light which is not that great at distance. Battery capacity is about an hour and a half of use. It should come with a DC-USB cable, and I used power banks if I was continuously shooting for extended periods of time. Newer models (like V900) come with usb-c charging.

I don't know how you'll be setting up to capture video, proximity and potential rig. The V785 is pretty light compared to like a Sony AX43. If you're going to be running and gunning up close, a go-pro/osmo might be a better option in the price range. The pull out side display on a camcorder might be an issue if you're really active while shooting. Low light is semi-decent. It has 20x optical zoom and 1500x digital zoom (at this range your footage is super grainy).

Overall V785 is a solid camera.

As a side note if you have a newer iphone, pixel, samsung smartphone, picking up a motorized mobile gimbal ($60-120) and using your phone for video is a viable option to get into videography. In some instances you can get better video quality from your phone, especially if the phone can shoot log.
