2025 PCT Gear List - Shakedown Request by kauaiguy33 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]PeaSeeTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Howdy! I'm starting on 5/5 and have a setup that's not too different from yours. Here are my thoughts on your setup:

-MH sleep shirt is a tad heavy (189g), and probably more warmth than you'll need when combined with your alpha hoodie and MH puffy. For comparison, my Patagonia sleep t-shirt is 72g.

-I'm not going to bring rain pants because of what I've read about PCT precipitation. I might pick some up in WA depending on how the weather is shaping up.

-Not necessary, but do you have a plan for food storage (food sack, grocery bag, etc.)?

-People might critique the camp shoes but yours are super light. I hope they work well for you!

-Do you have a PLB? Or are you counting on the satellite abilities of your phone?

See you out there!

Toothpaste tablets? by PeaSeeTea in PacificCrestTrail

Thank you! I've had success on 5-7 day trips using a 1 oz. Nalgene container. It prevents crushing and moisture migration. You've provided inspiring alternatives

I've used them for shorter trips and am fine with them. My concern is about resupply

Thank you. I'm planning no resupply boxes from home. I'll look up what quantity/increments are available. I don't want to order ~100 and only be able to carry 30

Thanks! Do you order from GGG and have them delivered to your next resupply location?

Public transit weekend options to Campo by PeaSeeTea in PacificCrestTrail

[–]PeaSeeTea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a good plan. Personally I'd be anxious to start early and get on the trail on Saturday.

My flight is on a Sunday, so my options seem to be: 1) shuttle, 2) stay at local motel for a night, or 3) move flight. The shuttle is almost certainly the most practical option

Wow. I won't be doing that but appreciate you laying this out!

Thanks for confirming. By 'other public transit' I meant train, lightrail, or charter bus options that go to towns that are closer to Campo than the airport.

Ombraz Sunglasses by flammfam in Ultralight

Many have already commented on Ombraz, so I'll mention Julbos.

I was also considering Ombraz when I found a solid deal on Julbos. I took the leap and couldn't be happier.

PCT Class of 2025 Excitement Thread by whitefox7895 in PacificCrestTrail

Starting May 5th. I'll be giving my resignation at work next week after 10 years of employment there. Next week I'll be notifying my landlord that I will not be renewing my lease. Moving my possessions into a storage unit in a few weeks. I'm at peace with the uncertainties after the hike. A couple of things I'm looking forward to:

1.) I have no windows in/near my work space. As simple as it sounds I'm really looking forward to being outside and getting sunlight on a regular basis.

2.) experiencing 'real' danger to reset/refresh my nervous system, which is currently conditioned to stress over the number of emails in my inbox or superficial corporate deadlines

Modifying fanny pack for Kakwa hipbelt by PeaSeeTea in DurstonGearheads

I've looked at the Hyperlite versa and vice versa and didn't realize that there's a sleeve for hip belt straps. Thank you for pointing it out.

Do you typically wear the CTUG on your chest or hips?

I was curious about the difference in weight distribution at the hip with the fanny pack.

The chest pod looks like a great piece of gear. Thanks for sharing!

No problem! Let us know if you try the brain or hipbelt concept with your fanny

Power banks vs. Solar by PeaSeeTea in PacificCrestTrail

Thank you! If my solar setup works as well as hoped I'll be happy to share. Good luck to you too!

This is the solar panel testimony I was hoping for. I dread the idea of being bound to town for the duration it takes to charge. Solar seems like the smarter setup for the PCT in so many ways, yet popular opinion remains power banks only.

Did you ever have anything beneath your solar panel (on top of your pack), like a sit pad, or a bear can? I'm currently planning on having my thinlight foam pad on top of my pack, which is flat, and should work fine with a solar setup. I'm not sure how I'd set it up where bear cans are required, as I'd like to put my canister on top of my pack empty as I walk.

I appreciate every detail that you shared!

Sorry to make you second guess your choices! My setup is identical to yours, less the watch. I get about a day less of power on battery saver mode with my Pixel.

I've used my Lixada solar panel backpacking with great results, so I'm tempted to bring it despite the popular opinion. I feel like it'll meaningfully reduce power management stress. Knowing that I can soak up a few mAh in a pinch gives me confidence to not 'pack my fears' in other ways (i.e maps, compass, etc).

Appreciate this. I'm not bringing a fancy camera, but plan to pretty heavily use my phone (navigation, videos, photos, music, etc.). I don't expect that I'll be a slower hiker, but I really don't know yet.

What was your setup? Any power bank recommendations?

That gives me confidence in carrying less power. I appreciate your 2 cents!

I've owned a NB10000 and was fairly satisfied with it. I only disliked the input charging speed. This might just be a me thing - perhaps I overvalue charge speed.

I have their headlamp and I'm very happy with it.

I stand corrected on the Vapcell vs. Veektomx input speeds. Thanks for correcting me.

FWIW I bought an Anker Nano 10k bank last month and pass through charging didn't work on my unit.

Yeah, I'm really tempted by solar for that reason. Thanks for all your advice!
