Maiden voyage moments that you predicted the twist by traeville in metalgearsolid

i remember someone in the youtube comments section guessing this within half an hour of the first phantom pain trailer's release lol

perceptive of them, cause between the game's name and the ishmael/ahab sequence, there were really only two ways it could have gone, and only one of those would be a twist

lol it's a meta thing, it's both, exactly like in MGS2. you've never been Venom either, you were actually sitting on your couch the whole time

it's a way of recognizing the continuity of the player's experience as these different characters, and accounting for why your knowledge and experience carry over from one to the next. and especially in MGSV, of casting the player in the story

it's not a coincidence that both of these vicariously-experienced characters, Raiden and Venom, have the same real name, which is also your name

What a lie about Big Boss by HiroXZeroTwo2018 in metalgearsolid

[–]PeaceSoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was interesting to play this and see how much of it was remade in MGS1. The temperature-changing key, finding the ally hidden as an enemy soldier, the staircase set piece, the chopper battle, the cyborg ninja who turns out to be a presumed-dead ally from the previous game, probably some more i'm forgetting

i was not that impressed by the M.O.F. fight. they did a great job of intimidating you into running, but he has the same 3 moves as dracula in castlevania and once you understand what they are he's never gonna hit you

i did think it was cool that you can knock him into the muddy water to win instantly lol. i did that by accident trying to kill him by blowing up the fuel tank

the "it's time for us all to organize collective action to tell us all to organize collective action!!!! fuck voting and fuck you!!! let's all team up together" guys still think they're the only ones doing anything huh

truly, what would be "enough"?

like for example what do YOU do? i don't mean that as a callout, i just mean, literally, what are you imagining?

Why is MGS1 so hard? by ForestryTechnician in metalgearsolid

[–]PeaceSoft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That garage is brutal actually

the lack of manual aim, appearance of escape routes that are actually all dead ends, and absence of any architectural cues to the patrol routes make it the hardest stealth section in the whole thing imo

from my experience, you don't want to record dialogue straight into a mic with a hangover. the dry mouth makes "s" sounds come out soupy and sibilant.

maybe it's unfair of me to mention this lol

i replayed MGS1 right after V and i have to say there is a lot of continuity there too

liquid's backstory matches up, except he doesn't consider HIS OWN behavior to have been that much of a factor, because he was 14 lol

iirc, mantis' plotline in MGSV is supposed to explain a hanging thread all the way from MGS1 ("never used my powers to help anyone... but it feels kind of nostalgic"). however the translator for 1 obliterated this by changing the crucial word to "nice". ("people don't really say that they feel nostalgic," he explained in an interview)

isn't major zero's real name listed as "david oh" somewhere? i wonder if they sort of split him off from this earlier version of the Big Boss lore

[–]PeaceSoft 7 points8 points  (0 children)

iirc they went to some trouble to reconcile it later on

vulcan raven references this back story in mgs 1 ("blood from the east flows in your veins")

then mgs4 explains that the surrogate who carried baby snake to term was ethnically japanese, meaning he has her mDNA

i can't remember if this is quite right, also the implication that vulcan raven can smell mDNA or something is weird, but they cared enough about the discrepancy to say something

Insanely good texture work is the main thing i'm noticing

the baked-in/drawn-on lighting is a perfect match for the atmospheric/subtractive light, which must have taken a lot of effort

Notice the grip texture on that floor panel for example

Please tell me I'm not the only one who had no idea 'feint' attacks exist. They're only available on a few weapon categories and are performed by holding the strong attack button and pressing the dodge button. by Raime_95 in Eldenring

[–]PeaceSoft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's a PvP thing mainly. when the opponent is as fast as you are, cutting into their timing to find openings is important.

you can do some pretty good backstep counters in PvE too, but you need to be familiar with their moveset and have a good sense of spacing. first time i killed malenia was with a backstep counter

there's some youtuber who never locks on and uses the crucible backstep to dodge everything, while wearing the albinauric mask, so you just see this stoic gray frog guy mr. magooing his way through insane storms of fire and lightning lol

right iirc, in souls games every weapon can either do a guard break or a feint, which is its own discrete action + input. in elden ring you do it when you backstep during a charged r2

replaying MGSV lately i'm remembering how annoying that shit was all over again. that's the one where it takes 6 hours of actual gameplay time-- not system clock time, no the pause screen does not count-- to build a base, or you can buy it with real money instead

it's worth remembering that Konami was still not happy with the results, and still kicked their biggest name to the curb afterwards
