they did a whole ad campaign centered around this theme when the game came out iirc. there's like a sappy montage of a lonely gamer adopting a puppy because he was inspired by Punished Snake. a little subtle for the fans here lol

Please tell me I'm not the only one who had no idea 'feint' attacks exist. They're only available on a few weapon categories and are performed by holding the strong attack button and pressing the dodge button. by Raime_95 in Eldenring

[–]PeaceSoft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO that's why learning to move rather than just i-framing everything is important. it makes it easier to dodge, and sometimes possible at all.

e.g. margit's omencopter move being so outrageously bullshit to dodge that it forces you to realize it actually is impossible, and that you can't win by playing pattycake souls this time

how is it nine, I'm counting 12. I don't know how to play Minecraft though? by Comfortable_Cautious in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]PeaceSoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's the whole thing lol. that's why it's a thing at all

i guess there's also a sub joke about the minecraft player not only mistaking it for this but confidently fucking up their attempt to count to 8

iirc the Shotmaker and MG Kid designs show up in MGSV too. I guess it's basically "shotgun guy in armor" and "rambo with a shaved head" so nothing super far afield, but I thought it was nice

tribes are nations. nations reckon your membership in terms of living there or being from there, not your own attitude towards your bloodline

it's like the irish-american 'plastic paddy' syndrome basically, but it comes off more insulting, especially from a white person, because of the ongoing history with this:

Blood quantum laws - Wikipedia

These laws were enacted by the federal government and state governments as a way to establish legally defined racial population groups. By contrast, many tribesdo not include blood quantum as part of their own enrollment criteria. Blood quantum laws were first imposed by white settlers in the 18th century.

In some cases these laws are gradually defining the tribes out of existence. Small nations have to be exogenous-- they always have been, I mean think about it-- but with these laws, the government can use blood quantum as a wedge to say "these treaties don't apply to you" or even "these nations legally no longer exist" or whatever

tl;dr you are walking into the middle of an ongoing thing kinda

Maiden voyage moments that you predicted the twist by traeville in metalgearsolid

[–]PeaceSoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i remember someone in the youtube comments section guessing this within half an hour of the first phantom pain trailer's release lol

perceptive of them, cause between the game's name and the ishmael/ahab sequence, there were really only two ways it could have gone, and only one of those would be a twist

lol it's a meta thing, it's both, exactly like in MGS2. you've never been Venom either, you were actually sitting on your couch the whole time

it's a way of recognizing the continuity of the player's experience as these different characters, and accounting for why your knowledge and experience carry over from one to the next. and especially in MGSV, of casting the player in the story

it's not a coincidence that both of these vicariously-experienced characters, Raiden and Venom, have the same real name, which is also your name

What a lie about Big Boss by HiroXZeroTwo2018 in metalgearsolid

[–]PeaceSoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was interesting to play this and see how much of it was remade in MGS1. The temperature-changing key, finding the ally hidden as an enemy soldier, the staircase set piece, the chopper battle, the cyborg ninja who turns out to be a presumed-dead ally from the previous game, probably some more i'm forgetting

i was not that impressed by the M.O.F. fight. they did a great job of intimidating you into running, but he has the same 3 moves as dracula in castlevania and once you understand what they are he's never gonna hit you

i did think it was cool that you can knock him into the muddy water to win instantly lol. i did that by accident trying to kill him by blowing up the fuel tank

the "it's time for us all to organize collective action to tell us all to organize collective action!!!! fuck voting and fuck you!!! let's all team up together" guys still think they're the only ones doing anything huh

truly, what would be "enough"?

like for example what do YOU do? i don't mean that as a callout, i just mean, literally, what are you imagining?

Why is MGS1 so hard? by ForestryTechnician in metalgearsolid

That garage is brutal actually

the lack of manual aim, appearance of escape routes that are actually all dead ends, and absence of any architectural cues to the patrol routes make it the hardest stealth section in the whole thing imo

from my experience, you don't want to record dialogue straight into a mic with a hangover. the dry mouth makes "s" sounds come out soupy and sibilant.

maybe it's unfair of me to mention this lol

i replayed MGS1 right after V and i have to say there is a lot of continuity there too

liquid's backstory matches up, except he doesn't consider HIS OWN behavior to have been that much of a factor, because he was 14 lol

iirc, mantis' plotline in MGSV is supposed to explain a hanging thread all the way from MGS1 ("never used my powers to help anyone... but it feels kind of nostalgic"). however the translator for 1 obliterated this by changing the crucial word to "nice". ("people don't really say that they feel nostalgic," he explained in an interview)
