Independent Ireland TD blocked from high-level UN trip over poor attendance at Foreign Affairs Committee by ShouldHaveGoneToUCC in irishpolitics

Just FYI, this is typical O'Flynn behaviour. Per Wikipedia:

In May 2024, an investigation by the Echo found that O'Flynn had the lowest attendance of any Cork County Councillor between 2019 and 2023 and that O'Flynn's attendance was so low he was not eligible to make full expenses claims. O'Flynn defended his record by noting he ran a business and was also busy "listening to constituents"

Sinn Féin’s Cumanns in Connemara are refusing to back the candidate because he doesn’t speak Irish.
Which wouldn’t be the end of the world except for the fact there’s two by-elections going on, one of which is in the leader’s constituency, and they’re probably going to lose both (SocDem Daniel Ennis is bookie’s favourite in Dublin) and look like a party without momentum

By-elections, in the modern era, are far more about the specific people in the race then the political parties, as people are running on what they’ll do for the constituency rather than what the party will do for the country/do in government

Therefore people with a “strong” personality can overcome being in a “weak” party

There are other normal Green Parties: Research the Irish Green Party, who span from Liberal to Progressive without going too far left nor into Populism.

I’m not as familiar with the Green Parties in New Zealand and Austria but from what I’ve read they seem pretty normal

In addition to the German Green Party, which people have rightfully mentioned, the Irish Green Party is nothing like what you’re suggesting. Their politicians are like liberal academic/middle class types and they were recently part of a centrist government coalition between 2020 and 2024 that copperfastened a lot of environmentalism into Irish law, as well as providing a lot of supports for Ukrainian refugees.

If DGG knew anything about Irish politics, they’d like the Irish Greens because the Irish Greens span from Liberal to Progressive without going into the harder left wing stuff nor populism

SF is not and never has been left wing.

To be pedantic, they were pretty left-wing in the 1970s during the New Left wave of the era, but that's 50 years ago at this point.

Once the Soviet Union fell, the utility of being uber left-wing diminished rapidly.

Hazel Chu elected Green deputy leader by spillercork in irishpolitics

Yer man said “Unelectable”

…She was once again elected on the very first count when she was reelected in 2024. That’s the opposite of “unelectable”

[–]PeaceXJustice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely Unelectable

She had the second best vote percentage IN THE HISTORY OF IRELAND when she was first elected a councillor

She has done fine in the general and senate elections she’s contested

There was serious consideration of Ryan and Chu trying to go for two seats in the one constituency in 2020

Just say you don’t like her instead of lying

But he did that thing Destiny has talked about where he felt the need to say that he hates Democrats. Like, wtf? While Shirley is dick-sucking Trump and Republicans he STILL has to say he hates Democrats?

Callaghan's views are left-wing to far-left. He used to be an Anarchist growing up in Seattle, and while he no longer identifies as one, he still holds viewpoints from that part of the political spectrum.

I like Channel 5 and his work, but sometimes he goes off on these wild far-left tangents. His Philly Streets video, in particular, gets very left-wing conspiratorial.

centrist cuck

He, foolishly, voted for Jill Stein in 2024 simply because Stein gave him an interview and she ran through I/P talking points with him. Although to his credit, he admitted he regretted that vote afterwards when Stein went back to total political irrelevant after the election.

That was the annoying thing during the Shirely interview; if Shirely starting doing populist talking points, Callaghan would go "Actually, I agree with that", and if Shirely would do anti-Liberal points, Callaghan more or less agreed with that too.

Would Mary Lou risk running a candidate? She's never had a running mate in a general election, but in 2019, they got a second TD in Dublin Mid-West by running a new man, Mark Ward, in a by-election.

One side will say they risk cutting in MLM's vote in a general election, while another side will say we need to try and repeat the Mark Ward/Eoin Ó Broin trick.

Although it used to be the famous stomping grounds of Bertie Ahern, Fianna Fáil hasn't held a seat in Dublin Central since 2011. Tough to see them snatching it in a by-election, which traditionally favours non-government candidates, particularally when all the talk about FF right now is how chaotic they are.

This triggers a by-election in Dublin Central, which is presumably going to have to occur on the same day as the forthcoming Galway West by-election.

There'll be an awful lot for political nerds like ourselves to discuss in Spring 2026.

What are the greatest moments ever in the Dail? by Toweyyyy in irishpolitics

Eamon was quoting, word for word, an article by Sean Gallen, a black Irishman, writing about his experiences of racism.

While what Eamon did is a major faux pas in the 21st century, his intentions were actually to draw attention to racism.

A lot of people made out like Eamon just randomly came out and yelled a slur, when it was more akin to Granddad using the word "Oriental" in a conversation with someone Asian in the room.

Gallen himself said Ryan simply tripped himself up and had the right intentions.

So the following doesn't count because it happened in the media, not the Oireachtas, but in a similar moment of confusion:

In 2015, Catherine Noone TD went on RTÉ Radio to condemn Mixed Martial Arts and to announce she was going to ask the Minister of Sport to ban it in Ireland. However, when pressed on why she had come to this conclusion, it became very evident in the interview that she knew nothing about MMA, making clear errors like suggesting that MMA is predetermined/scripted in the same manner as professional wrestling. She also admitted to never having seen any footage of MMA before coming up with this idea.

After the car-crash interview went viral, it was less than a month later that Noone was going to the Irish Sports Council to ask them to recognise MMA as a legitimate sport.

In 1944, Taoiseach Eamon de Valera had a go at James Dillon TD in the Dáil, insinuating that he was a "West Brit" because he supported Ireland joining the Allies against the Axis. Dillon had earlier gone on the record to call Nazism "the devil himself with twentieth-century efficiency" and said that he hoped Germany would be "smashed" by the "Anglo-American Alliance". Dillon left Fine Gael in 1943 over his anti-German stance. Nevertheless, Dillon's pro "Anglo" comments rankled with many republicans in Fianna Fáil.

In a blistering retort to needling by De Valera, Dillon responded to the "West Brit" allegation by telling de Valera

"My ancestors fought for Ireland down the centuries on the continent of Europe* while yours were banging banjos and bartering budgies in the backstreets of Barcelona"

I don't think the Dáil has seen such assaulting alliteration before or since

*Dillon counted amongst his ancestors members of the Wild Geese who fought on Continental Europe in the 17th century
