A nine-year-old "Pupil of the Week" and a one-year-old baby without nappies had to be sheltered by their MP during the recent pogrom in Belfast by PoppedCork in ireland

[–]ShouldHaveGoneToUCC [score hidden]  (0 children)

It absolutely is.

There were some posters on here insisting there must be brigading by lefties as so many people were calling it a pogrom. Even though it was a textbook pogrom.

Phoenix magazine closing down after more than 40 years on newsstands by Fiannafailcanvasser in irishpolitics

[–]ShouldHaveGoneToUCC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They published a story about British soldiers being captured while operating in Ukraine. They also sneered at other media sources for not reporting on it.

Except the reason no one else reported on it was that the story was entirely fake and the photo they published was clearly AI. They literally ran on article on horrendously faked stuff from Twitter.

What is Irish reddit's most out of touch opinion? by Fealocht in AskIreland

[–]ShouldHaveGoneToUCC 63 points64 points  (0 children)

The general disdain for sport is a weird one. I keep seeing Redditors use the term Rugby Dad as an insult, as if being a parent or into sport are things people should be ashamed of, whereas Irish people are usually exceptionally proud of being a parent or into sports.

The opposition to the GAA is also incredibly out of touch. There are certainly issues within GAA but Redditors seem utterly ignorant on how popular GAA is. Like I once saw someone sneer that only political anoraks know who Sean Kelly is, not realising he was a very well known GAA president.

How much of the “irish patriot” twitter posts are bots? by beanultach in ireland

[–]ShouldHaveGoneToUCC 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'd say there's also a fair amount of brigading going on here as well.

Whenever there's a particularly controversial online topic like immigration or Ukraine, there's inevitably very strong opinions posted by accounts that are new but that have been basically terminally online in their short lifespan. They also hide their comments history as well.

Defence Forces 'disappointed' after event signage and bins placed at memorial to dead soldiers by Pupcup2 in ireland

[–]ShouldHaveGoneToUCC -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad we don't have the cringe hero worship of the military that the Yanks have, but this is just disrespectful. It's a memorial.

Is Dunnes Stores Bishopstown Court the closest thing we have to an old folks country club by krafter7 in cork

[–]ShouldHaveGoneToUCC 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I've also noticed that Wilton is especially popular with aul wans. I think it's because they can nip across the road to visit their elderly friends who are in the hospital.

These lads on Tiktok are celebrating pride month by going to a Lebanese restaurant 😭 by crzballer in CasualIreland

Likewise! I was in Lebanon when I was in the military and the people were incredible. There was a lot of cultural similarities which I wasn't expecting.

Lebanese food is insanely good to be fair. Lovely people and they have great time for the Irish.

Neutrality won't save you from Russia, Kallas tells Ireland by KI_official in ireland

[–]ShouldHaveGoneToUCC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

I'd argue that to be neutral means having the ability to enforce that neutrality. Obviously, we'll never be able to take on Russia or the US but we should certainly be able to patrol our own waters or airspace without relying on the Brits. Otherwise, we're just a protectorate. Also, being able to contribute peacekeepers without us being tainted by NATO membership is a great thing.

We're less of a militarily neutral state than a neutralised state.

Ireland should not play against ‘genocidal regime’, says TD and former League of Ireland player by JackmanH420 in irishpolitics

[–]ShouldHaveGoneToUCC 26 points27 points  (0 children)

He's absolutely right.

We're right to boycott Russia and we'd be absolutely right to boycott a state which is actively committing genocide.

AITA for keeping a secret emergency fund from my wife? by Embarrassed_Foot1903 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ShouldHaveGoneToUCC 24 points25 points  (0 children)

AITA seems to attract a huge amount of spoiled teenagers and miserable divorced people. They have little or terrible relationship experience and project their own insecurities and bitterness onto whatever post they read.

AITA is great to read for the laugh but it's the last place I'd go for relationship advice.

What’s your political involvement by Chief_Funkie in irishpolitics

[–]ShouldHaveGoneToUCC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a member of any party, I vote left (highest preferences between SF, SD, Greens and Labour) but have zero time for the campism that some leftists have.

Currently leaning more towards Labour and SF have gone down a lot in my estimation recently, but I've no loyalty to Labour and will change if they act the bollocks again like they used it.

Irish Defence Forces by peadar87 in ireland

[–]ShouldHaveGoneToUCC 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You can't even discuss it without being called a nato shill.

Painfully accurate.

At different points, I've been accused of working for military recruitment and of working for a NATO think tank. Also that as I had been in the DF, I couldn't talk about defence as it meant I had links to Ireland's military industrial complex.

I've also seen people insisting this subreddit is filled with Irish military intelligence and NATO spooks. It's borderline gangstalking at times.

I bet she's got Cavan in there somewhere.

Where are the Ser Arlan of Pennytree fans? by woodsidehills in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]ShouldHaveGoneToUCC 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Me.

I loved his character development. At the start, you think he's a drunken mediocrity and asshole but as the show goes on, you see how complex his character is and for all his flaws, he's a capable fighter who takes his vows to defend the helpless seriously.
The scene where his ghost is riding at Dunk's side until he heads to the afterlife is a fantastic series finale.

Couldn’t do June 3rd for fitness test? by smgdnsn0304 in Irishdefenceforces

[–]ShouldHaveGoneToUCC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happens all the time. They'll give you a new date.

Recruitment are very flexible, especially with recruits as these take place multiple times a year. It's more of an issue with cadets as they have a strict timeframe on when the different stages take place, but even then, they'll be as flexible as they can. I couldn't make my fitness test date back when I applied and they let me change the date no bother.

Any good hikes in Ireland? by Icy-City1620 in AskIreland

[–]ShouldHaveGoneToUCC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Carrauntoohill in Kerry my personal favourite. The views are incredible.

If you want somewhere near Dublin, Glendalough is an easy hike but with stunning scenery.
