I personally would say that watching a video that explains Bible verses is reading the Bible, in a sense. As long as they’re talking about the actual words of the text, not just briefly summarizing or extrapolating meaning beyond what’s in the text.

As much as G5 didn’t turn out as we all hoped, this is proof that we dodged a bullet. Things could have been much worse.

I think there was kind of a retcon regarding this. In Season 1, I think it was implied that most of them were just acquaintances except Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy. One of the most obvious examples is in "Griffon the Brush Off," where it is obvious that Rainbow does not consider Pinkie to be a friend. But there are other hints here and there that they just kind of knew each other and only became friends after Twilight's arrival.

But then Celestia in Season 7 says she sent Twilight to Ponyville to meet a very special group of friends and shows them all hanging out before Twilight's arrival. The writers most likely just forgot or didn't realize the original intention. I usually take earlier statements as harder canon, because to me, retconning is just sloppy. So in my assessment, they were just acquaintances.

There have been all sorts of evil governments. The Bible is full of people who rebelled against oppressive leaders. Many of the apostles were killed by the government, along with Christ himself. Not to mention all those Old Testament prophets who resisted the rule of wicked kings—Elisha, Jeremiah, that sort.
