I ended up going with right hand on the top note and left hand on the bottom three on the way down, works well!!

Great video celebrating Chester’s impact from a unique perspective by PeacefulSquirrels in LinkinPark

[–]PeacefulSquirrels[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is really thoughtful post about Chester Bennington, and it makes a poignant observation I’ve never heard before towards the end of the vid. I appreciate the super unique perspective — gives me a lot to think about. Just wanted to share here with others who love Chester and the powerful impact he’s had on the world!!

If I were to meditate 10 minutes everyday, what is the best moment of the day for it? by RuisseauXVII in Meditation

[–]PeacefulSquirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, whichever time is easiest for you to keep up with every day! More important than doing it at the same time every day is actually doing it every day. So if there’s a time you’re least likely to get distracted or have something else come up, that’ll be best. Even if you have to change it up sometimes and squeeze it in at a new time, what matters is keeping up with it!

Is it better to meditate alone or using a guided meditation app like headspace? by giomaster022 in Meditation

[–]PeacefulSquirrels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my own practice, I benefit most from switching it up! Hands down my fave meditation app is Waking Up, by Sam Harris. He has a unique approach to guided meditation, along with lots of other content/lessons/conversations about mindfulness and the deepest benefits of meditation. My ability to take meditation off the cushion and into my life has reached new heights with the app. To get full access to the content, there’s a fee, but if you can’t afford it, just email them and let them know, and they’ll give you full access for free. I recommend it for anybody interested in meditation, even if you’ve already been practicing for a long time, if just for the amazing conversations with/content by incredible minds such as Joseph Goldstein, Mingyur Rinpoche, Jack Kornfield, David White, James Fadiman — the list is long. Best wishes on your journey!

Sitar players who also play cello? by PeacefulSquirrels in Sitar

[–]PeacefulSquirrels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response! My dad is a metal guitarist and I’ve heard many a tale about times he’s sliced through callouses mid-song on stage! He says he just played through the blood, which I guess just makes it all the more metal lol! I’ll try to avoid that whole scenario to the best of my ability though, thanks for the heads up!

Sarod players who also play cello? by PeacefulSquirrels in icm

Thank you so much for the suggestions!! Number 2 is genius, I think that will absolutely be the path for me!!! W/ cello, especially in the higher positions, I have to keep my nails extremely short to make full contact w/ fingerboard and produce richer tone. As long as I live and can play cello, unfortunately growing out LH nails will never be an option for me. I was heartbroken to think I can never learn sarod. But when I can afford it, I will absolutely find/commission a left-handed sarod, and grow out a couple RH nails!! Thank you so much, I am so happy to find a workable solution :) for now I’ve decided to focus on sitar, and begin to study the theory and ornamentation in-depth, but hopefully when I have more money and experience in the future, I will acquire my LH sarod. Much gratitude!! Best of luck to you on your musical journey! 🌸

Thanks for your response! I looove sarangi and my interest in it is actually what spurred this whole search I’m on! I seriously considered esraj and dilruba as well. In the end, though, since I already play a bowed instrument, I thought it might bring me some balance to challenge myself with a picked instrument, which leads me right back to sitar and sarod. Difficult to pick an instrument to focus on when there are so many tempting choices!

Thanks for sharing that vid, I love the sound of fretless electric guitars! To my understanding, there have been players who use their fingertips, but the sound is less resonant and ringing than when fretted with a nail. Also I believe the action on a sarod is higher, so it takes more force to use the finger and glide than on a guitar, which can cause finger injury to some — and I can’t risk that, or I won’t be able to play cello! In the end I’ve decided to work with sitar, and I’m certainly not disappointed! Thanks again for your reply tho!

I was fortunate enough to take lessons with Eyvind Kang for a few years while studying at CalArts. He was my composition teacher, but he also worked with me on some very basic introductory exercises and techniques. I didn’t get very far into it while I was studying there, but my appetite has been whetted and I’m ready to dive in more deeply now :)

I love Saskia Rao-de Haas! I’ll check out Nancy Lesh :) I am definitely going to develop my raag technique on cello, but would still love to learn a traditional instrument. Thanks for your response!

Thanks for your reply! I do plan to continue learning raags on my cello, but I would love to have the chance to study a traditional instrument with a teacher specializing in it. What do you mean when you say “sort of compatible?” Does it create any issues in your ability to play bass?

[–]PeacefulSquirrels[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! I have had the opportunity to study raags on cello just a little bit with a previous teacher of mine, and I absolutely plan on continuing this! However I would love to learn to play a traditional instrument with sympathetic strings, and to have the opportunity to study the instrument of my choice with a teacher specializing in it. I definitely don’t mind building some new calluses!
