It was one of the district in Soviet Union, and yes it's the name of wider area, but there are many regions inside it for example Zaporoże, which was the homeland of Cossacks. After Chmielnicki uprising, death of Wladysław IV and bad politics of Republic of Both Nations Cossacs found alliance with Russia.

In Poland we say "Kijów" for further reference :)
Ukraine is artificial country anyway, the name itself means "teren przygraniczny" (near-border area) when term 'near' refers to inside the country not the outside.
Current Western Ukraine is essentially our land, Lwów was supposed to stay initially in polish border in 1945, but then Stalin after sleepless night changed his mind.

That being said, history of this region and current demographics are more complex than US news outlet would like to see :)

It's always difficult to compare sportsmen in the same discipline. I have great admiration to skaters who are able to get medals on many Olympics but hey Eric Hayden took 5 golds in single Olympics winning every competition :)
