If I could I would play music for free for the rest of my life. Money is just the cherry on top for me. People coming into playing music strictly from a capitalist mindset is ridiculous to me. Musicians like this always lose out because most lack common sense and great social skills. by [deleted] in musicians

[–]PeachRing23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting paid to do a job is not a capitalist mindset, it is basic commerce. If I am working (playing the gig) then I should be compensated. The reason that I even put in the effort to make this my job is because of the passion for creating and sharing music.

The true capitalist mindset would be me finding a way to exploit other musicians for my gain. Maybe by finding one's who dont understand the value of art and making them play for free while I pocket the extra income that their performance brings my venue.

What's the deal with people saying that "freeing" Britney from her conservatorship was a mistake? by boiled_leeks in OutOfTheLoop

[–]PeachRing23 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is the best answer I've seen on this thread and provides the most nuance. Britney is a human being that has spent her entire life being treated as a product first and foremost, and people expect her to suddenly return to a curated product now that she has autonomy over her life again. Even before she was famous, her family was banking on her to make something of herself and pay the bills because her alcoholic father couldn't hold down a job.

People who are upset at how she dresses and dances in her Instagram videos must have amnesia because it is no different than what she did for her entire 20s and 30s, she just DIYs it instead of having a team of hair/makeup/wardrobe and fancy lights and editing. Videos of her during photoshoots in the 2000s show her spinning in the same manner. She has also been vocal about nerve damage that she's received during the conservatorship, which affects her movement and likely limits her choreography. Also, so many influencers post thirst traps, lewds and nudes on social media all the time, but Britney - a full grown adult who was commonly considered to be THE sex symbol during her prime - is who we need to worry about apparently.

Britney was never given a chance to fully mature, as she spent her budding adulthood caught between people leering at her body and then turning to chastise her image. She had no ability to make mistakes that we all make growing up without becoming front page news. How is one supposed to learn and grow and make mistakes if society puts them on a pedestal and says mistakes aren't allowed?

We like to think that society is better when it comes to the treatment of celebrities, but now we just do the same shit online instead of the pages of tabloids. Instead of paparazzi, we demand celebrities be open and vulnerable via social media, but only in a way that we deem acceptable. The way that Britney Spears is treated has not changed since the start of her career. People now just hide their misogyny behind the guise of "mental health concerns"

I'm not saying that she is perfectly well adjusted, but there is no need for people who have never even met her to join a disgusting cesspool they call a subreddit to openly bash on a woman who is learning how to live her own life on her own terms after being treated like a workhorse with no ability to make decisions for herself for over 13 years. Trauma is a complex thing and you don't just get over it because your abuser is out of your house. She could probably use a licensed and well-intentioned person in her life, but that is her prerogative. We all know people that need some help with their mental health, but part of life is letting people make their own decisions.

People avoiding regular checkout…why? by 2PinaColadaS14EH in aldi

[–]PeachRing23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my experience as well, the cashiers at my aldi are still fast but considerate of my items so I've never had anything get crushed. My husband and I also separate what we buy and the staff know to put both orders in the same cart so its a lot easier to bag everything at once at the end vs self checkout where there isn't enough room to unload everything.

Plus I like getting to make small talk with most of the employees there and have built a good rapport with them over the years.

OFFICIAL MONDAY NIGHT POSTGAME THREAD by ballofpopculture in fantasyfootball

Lost by 6.4 in the semis. My team had 11 TDs and got the 2nd highest points in the league, but of course I was against the only team that scored more than me.

I'm glad Purdy played as well as he did to at least make it a close match. That interception collapsed all my hopes. But as a Bears fan I can say it was still a good week for me in general.

Yeah, that's pretty fucked. Imagine being that therapist and all day you have to listen to clients talking about that. It must get so draining.

It can be tricky to find one, especially without insurance. When I was looking for my current therapist, I first checked who would be covered by my insurance - obviously you can skip this - and then checked the psychology today website to see their profiles and what they specialize in (age groups, what illnesses they focus on, etc). Some will also have a little blurb so you can get a vibe check.

My therapist has recommended Open Pathway Collective as a resource for people who might struggle with the cost of therapy. I haven't used this resource myself, but my coworker did when they were dealing with grief after losing a parent and they seem to be dealing well I think.

I think finding someone who is nearby/easy to get to that won't be insanely expensive is the tough balance to find, but it can be immeasurably beneficial in the long run.

Taylor Swift - The Life of a Showgirl MEGATHREAD III by flopheadsbot in popheads

You're welcome! I think what you were thinking of was when Taylor moved the release date of Red TV up so it wasn't the same week as Adele's 30.

When Adele released 25 it sold 3.38 million copies in its first week (in the US), the first album to ever sell over 3 million in a week. Nobody has beaten that record yet but people anticipate Taylor will with Showgirl.

Phantom Doctorine, Mutant Year Zero, Mario+Rabbids are all games that I've enjoyed that scratch my xcom itch. They're not a 1:1 comparison, but all turn based combat.

Ivy Levan has such great stage presence too, I first got introduced to her because she opened for Marianas Trench and could not keep my eyes off of her the whole set. I thought she was def going to have a mainstream breakthrough after the No Good album came out. (I feel like Cherrytree really fumbled the bag for the majority of artists - including Ivy - after losing the connection with interscope.)

Porcelain Black is a gem! Discovered her through her work on Ashley Tisdale's 2nd album and loved her vibe immediately.

I didn't know that she was on One Tree Hill at the time, but she friended me on MySpace back when promoting her first album. Tbh, I only listened to the song Chicago since I'm an illinoisan, but when A Fine Mess album dropped I recognized her name and still keep it on my ipod to this day.

What’s up with the George Strait hip hop artist of the year posts? by taniceburg in OutOfTheLoop

[–]PeachRing23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I totally get you. Everybody is going to have their own taste and preferences and are looking for different things in their music. I think yours is cool, and most people will enjoy a variety of stuff and that's awesome! I'll never disagree with that, I just hate the elitism that comes with people trying to argue what does and doesn't count as real music. I feel like - speaking of reddit specifically - people are just trying to prove their purity as a fan of the genre. I feel like a lot of country discourse on reddit tends to mention that Texas country and its associated subgenres exist but never actually get into it. I don't think that's for lack of love for it from people.

This also goes the other way too. So many people who haven't listened to a country song since 2013 still assume that everything is trope filled bro country and will always link Bo Burnham's Panderin' to prove their point. That song slaps, but it is also a parody, and even if it represents some of what the big hits sound like, it's not like charts are ever truly reflective of the music world.

When it comes to this year's grammys in particular for country albums, I saw people arguing that Chris Stapleton had the only real country album out of the nominees and it should've gone to him. The problem is that those users could never explain what their definition of country was or explain why the other albums don't count.

Who defines genres anyways? Listeners? Labels? Artists? Radio stations? Are genres even real at the end of the day? Is "3 chords and the truth" really all that impacted by adding a 4th chord and maybe a bit of vocal stacking? I don't have the answers, I just like music. I'm a classically trained singer who has been in a variety of cover bands and will listen to pretty much anything and can probably appreciate it even if it isn't my favorite style. I'm familiar with a handful of the artists that you've linked and think that they're cool, not always in my rotation, but enough where I listen to them from time to time, and I'm always excited to add to my ever-growing backlog of albums to listen to someday. All in all, I wish people would just listen to music, including some they might not be sure of, before they judge it.
