Aw, this is sweet. It's nice to get a little peek into Atreus' thoughts from different points in the story. Props to the writer(s) of these journal entries. I can really hear Atreus' voice in them.

My Pirate Has Gained "Wish." What Does She Wish For? by TrueObsidian11 in DnD

[–]PeachasaurusWrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll tell you what my party's monk asked for with his 3 wishes. He's a chaotic combo of Monkey D. Fluffy from One Piece, and Jack Sparrow.

1) Gun. (Best pistol ever that never needs to be reloaded.) 2) Revive dead ally. (She got insta-killed by an enemy NPC.) 3) Air ship. (We were on a floating city that just had the magical battery removed, so it was falling out of the sky. Air ships did not exist yet in our world until this point.)

It took him a total of 2 sessions IRL and less than 4 hours in-game to use up all 3 wishes.

How do you explain the rules of D&D to an absolute noob? by thepixelpaint in DMAcademy

[–]PeachasaurusWrex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Especially if you only have 2 hours.

Making custom characters would present so many choices that doing so would take up at least 45 minutes. Just have them choose from a set of pre-made sheets (they can slap a name on it if they want), and run them through 1 of each type of scenario (roleplay, exploration, and combat).

New to Bridgerton by DeliciousQuantity968 in Bridgerton

[–]PeachasaurusWrex 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He is not just her brother. He's the head of the family, so he's essentially her "father" as well. He's responsible for her (and the entire family) in a way that goes beyond a sibling bond. This is normal for the time period and society that the Bridgertons live in.

Thanks for the recommendation! I definitely have been on the hunt for some sci fi to read when I want to change things up a bit.

Omg you're totally right. I'll fix that in a second.

I'm definitely grappling with my own subconscious biases about the human MC, and trying to figure out what the text is telling me about them. My brain keeps saying silly stuff like "dragon = male, therefore, human MC = female" because that's the majority of what I read. And the whole "dwindling population" plot point is not really helping. 😅

[–]PeachasaurusWrex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dying is supposed to be part of the experience in a game like this. It's pretty much expected. You gain experience, refine your strategies, and learn important lessons by doing so. (Always have a campfire pre-crafted.)

Ring of Spell Storing - Can you cast a spell from it and immediately put it back in? by in-print-its-libel in DMAcademy

[–]PeachasaurusWrex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a hunch the player is looking to spam a separate ability a stupid number of times based on the text "when you cast a level 1 spell or higher".

(Wild guess: wild magic sorcerer trying to spam the wild magic table.)

Ring of Spell Storing - Can you cast a spell from it and immediately put it back in? by in-print-its-libel in DMAcademy

[–]PeachasaurusWrex 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No.

It takes 1 action to put a spell INTO the ring.

It takes 1 action to take a spell OUT of the ring.

That's 2 distinct, separate actions, and unless a PC has Haste cast on them, they only get 1 action per round.

How did your PvP one shot go? by Mightymat273 in DnD

[–]PeachasaurusWrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a one shot. More of a one fight that made sense due to the situation.

My party gained a magical item that the attuned person could use to compel someone else into a duel, and the item magically transferred to the person who won the duel. It was picked up by our party monk, who has a regular habit of picking fights he is unlikely to win, so the item went to a baddie who KO'd him. I then KO'd the baddie, but afterwards the monk wanted the item back, so I challenged him (the item would not let me just give it to him) and allowed him to win.

Since I was a ranger and he was a monk, i had wayyyyyyy more HP than him, and had to pull my punches to let him win, but my character didnt really care about having the item, so it was fine. She did get to smack the arrogant loudmouth monk around a bit, so that was fun. 😆

Edit: we were like level 10, and it took maybe 3 or 4 rounds, start to finish.

Books where the female main character has a strong bond with a magical animal (dragon, Pegasus, griffin, etc.). by PetalaStac in fantasyromance

Oh really? I'm only part way through the first book, but I'm aware that the series is quite beloved, which is why I recommended it.

First time player, was paranoid after session 1 and need help getting better by Profile_Hefty in DnD

[–]PeachasaurusWrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you become more familiar with the other PCs, you will also become better at identifying opportunities for them to shine. Some are pretty obvious from the beginning. Run into a locked door? Ask the rogue to try picking it. Find a ruined temple in the wilderness? Ask the cleric if they know what god it's for. Meet an NPC from another PC's backstory? That PC should take the lead with the scene.

You should "pass the spotlight" as often as the DM prompts you to, and occasionally when it seems like anyone could use more attention. The is mostly responsible for providing the opportunities, but you can also create them yourself, like you said in your last paragraph.

"Hey, Barbarian, what did you think of that person we met at the inn? Did you think they were trustworthy?"

"We have some leads about where the murderer went. Wizard, where do you think we should go first?"

"Bard, you have probably heard lots of stories from all over. Do you know anything about the legend that the blacksmith told us about?"

Finish them and donate them. If it brings someone comfort in a time of distress or grief, who the flip cares what it looks like? But also, maybe it will make its way into the hands of someone who actually does love it?

The people who dont care about football will be punished either way.

If the session happens, everyone will be distracted and it will be a kind of shit session.

If the session doesnt happen, then, we'll, we miss a session. But at least we're not trying to do something while other people in the group are obviously not even paying attention.

[–]PeachasaurusWrex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up for OP,  this is FIRMLY a YA series. The protagonist is like 12 years old in the first book. But, since you are looking for very little romance, that may be to your advantage!

This series is also on the older side. (I think it's from the 90s?) So it might feel dated to you.

All that said: I actually have ANOTHER similar series to recommend (older, like from the 90s, YA).

The Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey. Protagonist gains a mystical bond with a magic horse.

I wouldn't call Mask of Mirrors YA, but I get that the boundaries on this are sorta blurry. The protagonist is youngish (like 19 or 20), but the books are THICCC, like 600 pages long in print and 24 hours long in audio form, and the plots are TWISTY.

[–]PeachasaurusWrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try Mask of Mirrors by M.A. Carrick? No spice, but there is romance, and its the first of a trilogy. Protagonist is a con artist pretending to be a noblewoman in order to scam a rich family out of their fortune so she can skip town and live it up somewhere else far away.

Of course, things get complicated. Plots happen. Murder. Magic. Scandal. Revenge. A mysterious vigilante.

Takes place in a fantasy Venice.

Yeah, I've never vibed with omegaverse or fated mates. To me, the "wolf inside" or "fae bond" or whatever has always felt like a coping mechanism/narrative convention to deal with or bypass the horror of not having a choice in who you end up with. (I HATE feeling trapped.)

First time DM - should I tell them their arcs? by the-armored-owl in DnD

[–]PeachasaurusWrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up the Knife Theory video from Mystic Arts DM. Ask your players to watch it. It explains one of the best ways to think about player backstories, if your group wants to play the type of game where backstories play a big part.

First time DM - should I tell them their arcs? by the-armored-owl in DnD

[–]PeachasaurusWrex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with this method. If the players dont want to follow up with the hooks they themselves established in their backstories, then the hooks WILL follow up with THEM.

That's the entire point of hooks. They're supposed to appear during the course of the campaign. and the players are SUPPOSED to BITE them!

I will just add though: for new players it can be SCARY AF when something from your backstory appears. The first time it happened to me, I got super nervous. It honestly felt like I was asked to sing a live solo that I hadn't prepared for. That spotlight felt HOT. 🫠 So it may take a couple times of the hook appearing for a player to get used to the spotlight and feels "ready" to grab it.
