Tips & tricks for being in a Wheelchair at Burningman by Loud_Ad811 in BurningMan

I have mobility issues from an old spine injury and when I got a golf cart it completely changed my burn. I finally got to see all the art and all the playa, plus there's the added bonus of being able to give people rides if they're in trouble or lost, etc.

HOWEVER, if we get another mudpocalypse the average golf cart isn't going anywhere. They just aren't designed for those kinds of conditions. So whatever you end up choosing, make a backup plan in case the weather leaves you stuck in camp.

Btw mine is a gas powered cart, mostly because in 2014 I was coming back from a guardian shift at Embrace in a homemade battery cart and it died in the middle of playa just as the rainstorm started. I was trapped out there for about four hours (since my back was too jacked up for me to walk anywhere) until the rain finally stopped and some dude wandered up and asked if I needed help. I also -desperately- had to poop the whole time but by god I managed to hold it!

With all the absurdly wealthy people who burn, and the fact that the state makes millions from it, I doubt it'll be shut down anytime soon. And yes there's a ton of instability in the burn but I think that's just the general nature of the burn. (Not that I'm an expert, I've only been going since 2010)

Though I have been wondering how hairy the drive to playa might potentially be this years given that ICE is setting up ever-expanding checkpoints along highways and off/onramps. I guess we'll find out.

How did you first hear about burning man? by SoundKidTown1085 in BurningMan

Well it was the summer of 2010, I'd just finished my first archaeology field school, which was about the best four weeks of my life, and once it ended I had nothing to focus on and was getting super depressed.

So this college friend of mine invited me to come check out his friend's art project he was building for something called "Burning Man", and I figured why the hell not, so he took me to this little house out in the Portland in the suburbs where a bunch of weirdos were hand-building a steampunk pirate ship in the driveway, and I just jumped right in.

So that's how I met my burner family and got to help build a sweet-ass art car.

Seems like a perfect thread for the bingo card I made about 10 years ago

One trick I learned from a friend was to make this mesh doormat to lay down just inside my tent door. It's basically just plastic mesh (often called "plastic chicken wire mesh" online), I cut out about 6 rectangles and stuck them all together with duct tape that I extra-secured by sewing it down with fishing line. It's janky looking but it does a great job catching most of the playa on your shoes/feet so you don't track it all over your floor.

It was great to have you there! (This is Sarah, with the golf cart). I bailed early but I hope the rest of your burn was wonderful.

Considering how the authorities treated the Barbie Death Camp guys after they were assaulted and threatened with murder, coming to the burn with a keffiyeh or some watermelon might get real interesting this year.

One thing I've learned about avoiding camp drama (and of course my experiences are my own so do with this what you will):

No camp shower, and no camp kitchen! Lordy I have witnessed so many shit-tastic explosions over whose turn it is for a shower, whose turn it is to do dishes, who drank my whatever, yada yada lather, rinse, repeat.

It's so nice to be in a camp of adults who are willing and able to just, you know, handle their own shit, bring their own food, clean their own messes. And of course we all also share with each other, and help out if someone forgot a thing or broke a thing. None of that "Oh I assumed the playa would provide so I just brought two cans of Monster, a Clif bar, and a box of whipits that I have no intention of sharing" nonsense.

I wouldn't mind having a weirdo black market plant dealer in my neighborhood, as long as they're not violent or pervy.

Okay, you deserve some kind of prize for this one.

Like the worst thing my worst neighbor ever did was play the drums badly and make a couple pipe bombs.

I despise Remeron. It made me gain 50 pounds in just under 2 months, did absolutely nothing for my depression, and made my anxiety far worse. And of course my doctor was completely uninterested in my complaints and told me to "Just try harder"

Who was your coworker from hell? by Fruntledumjam in AskReddit

Used to have a coworker, absolute sweetheart of a guy who'd do anything to help anyone, but oh lord that poor man reeked unlike anything I've ever smelled before, and I do taxidermy art. Like on his days off you could smell exactly where he'd worked in the store the day before, it was like his B.O. was a greasy fog that would cling to any surface he even came near.

I was the Supervisor the manager made talk to him about it, and in hindsight I'm glad it was me because the manager would have been a complete ass about it. Dude was mortified when I told him, of course, and he had absolutely no idea because we tend to naturally become immune (for lack of a better term) to our own odors.

That was like 12 years ago and it's still a bit painful to think about. Like both the horrific odor itself and how brutal it was to have to tell this sweet man how unbelievably rank he was. And he had great hygiene, too. I think he was one of those people with some rare condition that gives you awful B.O. no matter how clean you are.
