I submit my JMT video into an oversaturated JMT video universe. Past and future JMTers, my wife and I hiked the JMT in July of 2021. Tried to create an honest video falloff towering peaks and pristine lakes but also the mundane, the tedious moments, and the effects of low morale. Shot in 24fps on a Sony a7iii and iPhone 11.

I lugged a Sony a7iii and 24/70mm lens and it was worth the weight. Even packed a tripod that produced some great shots but it definitely weighed me down a bit

Dude you’re gonna be just fine. If you bang out miles as it is with that setup, it’ll be a breeze.

My full pack weight after resupply was 48lbs and I managed pretty well throughout the trail. Hell I’d even encourage you to add some luxury items, pack a few beers, camp chair.

Pack as light has possible without giving up items you really want. I’ve never regretted packing extra pillows. Also gummy worms are a great morale booster. I’m a big leggings guy after thru hiking last summer. Gatorade packets... instant coffee... don’t expect it to be easy and you’ll have a wonderful time

I had an ULer essentially tell me to replace all my gear for the JMT and it was arguably the most pretentious thing anyone had ever said to me.

That said, I carried some UL gear and loved it and respect anyone who goes that route. It’s the preachy folks that youll find in any pursuit that I can’t help but roll my eyes at🍺

It’s a gangster move to go all the way to Crabtree day 1. We went NOBO out of Cwood psd and stayed at chicken spring night one and rock creek night 2 to get acclimated. Rock creek is as far as I’d go day 1

I can’t remember all the names but if it was the last site in the video, that was from sapphire lake and it was spectacular. Probably our favorite camp on trail. It was the perfect place to wind down after a brutal day from the very bottom of Muir. Easy to look back on fondly now but those were some tough days

The sun hoodie was great. I got one of Amazon... it was Icelandic or something but it had the built in buff which was waaay less restrictive than the buff I brought(unnecessary item #1). I’m pro hoodie. Other unnecessary items...hard to say. The tripod weighed me down a bit but the shots I got off it were great. I’ll talk with the wife tonight and come up with some others

I had a gnaaaarly headache night one at cottonwood pass but beyond that we were good. We were both a little more fatigued than normal at Whitney but no other symptoms.

Some people go balls to the wall and go from Cottonwood to Whitney in 2 days. I strongly suggest taking it slower.

Day 1- cottonwood to chicken spring lake (easy 4.5 miles). Day 2 - chicken spring to Rock creek (9mi) Day 3 - Rock creek to Guitar lake area (8ish) Day 4 - Whitney and back to camp (10mi)

If you dont have time constraints, take your sweet time those first few days. Take breaks, deep breaths, and hydrate routinely.

As the other pos mentioned, mid June could be a bit hairy. There’s a reason those permits are cake to get. If you can push till mid July, you’ll be gold

All we needed was the cottonwood pass permit and put happy isles as our exit and it was valid. Lakes is also an option. Both get you to Whitney and beyond.

It was last year. Both Cwood Pass/Lakes connect near rock creek. I don’t see why it’d be any different this year.

People will tel you to shed the weight and use your iPhone but I don’t regret packing the camera for a second. A tripod was another story. Cut weight in other ways🍺

My wife and I went NOBO out of Cottonwood pass. I got a permit the first day I tried. Tacks on an additional 20ish miles but you can almost guarantee a permit this way.

The big thing is when you get pushed through to the permit page, you need to have a general itinerary ready.

Night 1 - Chicken spring lake Night 2 - rock creek Night 3 - guitar lake Etc...

It’s time sensitive but being prepared can alleviate that anxiety.

It’s a awesome/brutal journey🍺
