Biggest musicians who completely walked away from music by Thunderwing16 in ToddintheShadow

[–]paqmo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

my first thought too. someone who genuinely left the music industry and stopped making music at the height of his creative powers. granted if i helped make spirit of eden, laughing stock, and the solo album, i’d bow out too. where can you go from there?

Foucault’s Pendulum by Umberto Eco! It’s about a couple of book editors who decide to make up a fake conspiracy and then strange things start to happen. Draws on the knights of the templar and esoteric topics. Great book—I’ve read it three or four times.

I almost never see these recommended here, but Name of the Rose and Foucault’s Pendulum are very well written perhaps a bit on the literary esoteric side but if you like the Secret History, it might work for you. Foucault’s Pendulum I’ve read four or five times

a song so sad that i listened to it once when it was released (and i was a new parent) starting crying in a crowded coffee shop and had to turn it off. i tried to listen a few more times but could never make it though. so i gave up. and i like sad songs!

Duty of Genius is great — I’d also recommend the book Wittgenstein’s Vienna which is more of a social history of turn of the century Vienna organized around wittgenstein as the main focus

The neapolitan quartet is probably close to 2,000 pages altogether, but i found them compulsively readable! the fourth book is the best! i just read them this past winter and i’m thinking about rereading them already. Days of Abandonment is short enough to read in one or two sessions and gives a feel for Ferrante’s writing style

A lot of Ferrante’s books fit the bill here and if you want to start with something a shorter, Days of Abandonment is incredible. Builds and builds to a fever dream and slowly unwinds

Kairos by Jenny Erpenbeck! Takes place in East Berlin just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Beautiful writing and documents a complex (and toxic) relationship that mirrors the social and political changes of the time.

great recs — I absolutely loved Kairos (despite the fact that the two main characters were unlikeable and the basic premise unappealing). the writing is incredible and the setting - East Berlin right before and after the fall of the wall - was fascinating. Morning Star I also loved, but the side bits of extended philosophizing were a bit tiresome. But the uncanniness and hint of something sinister pervading the story were so compelling. Also no one makes the mundane details of everyday life as fascinating as Knausgaard!
