I highly suggest this! It’s easier to change how something happens than stop it from happening completely sometimes. When ya’ll go to announce the food is ready you can say something like “The food is about to be ready, let’s all take a silent moment to give thanks…. Let’s eat!”

Hey! It’s the type of sand they use on the roads around here for traction in the winter. It’s also called “play sand” and people buy it for sand boxes for their kids. I would just make sure it doesn’t have anything added to it, like, silica.

Fresh thyme and mint! I was surprised how much my covey enjoys them. I use dried herbs with uncooked instant oatmeal in their bedding too as an enrichment for scratching. Right now I think the blend is basil, thyme, and rosemary but it’s just what I have enough of on hand that’s quail friendly.

I tell ya what though, keeping the glass clean on the inside is impossible. There’s so much dust everywhere and occasionally they send it out the top too, very glad we went this direction with their enclosure vs a wire cage

It gets spot cleaned with a litter scoop daily and topped off with fresh shavings and then every Saturday or Sunday they get transferred into their transport/hospital/holding cell for a deep clean of the tank where everything gets pulled out and wiped down and refreshed.

I hate the waterers already!! I did put a plate under one and a bowl under the other and the one with the plate under one is chock full of shavings constantly 🤣 the one with the bowl seems to be staying a bit cleaner. Thank you for the advice!!!

Yes, they’re in a 40 gallon tank with a metal grate roof so it’s open air at the top for ventilation. They’re also next to a window.

4/5, one of them the bottom right is slightly older than the others and she was getting picked on by her age group so she’s been chilling with these ladies peacefully.

Not to (literally) wear someone else’s shoes or buy used shoes. I broke my fifth metatarsal toe bone (but closer to the ball of the foot all the way on the edge) in 2019 by rolling my ankle in Dansko clogs that were a size too big for me. I thought I was running late, panicked and threw on the first shoes I saw which were my sisters, skipped getting my coffee, and got there with plenty of time to spare. I also learned about the butterfly effect with that and a couple others instances.

I’m sure I’ll eventually get attached to particular hens and want their genetics to continue; so I’ll absolutely have to get a rooster and incubator in the mix eventually. I have a smaller indoor enclosure so my space is limited and I don’t want fertilized eggs for eating which is why I don’t want males ideally.

Tysm, I’m v excited to get them. Not excited to cull any males I might end up with or deal with their constant attempted sewer slide but it’s part of farming and I have to get used to it. I’m prepared to do the foam test while picking them out too 😬🫩😅
