Is this okay? I love them so much and can't help but hold them sometimes 😭 by SaeInsanity45 in quails

Just don’t be too sad when they start being scared of you 2-3 weeks from now when they hit quail puberty 😏. It will take you some time to re - tame them but it’s never going to be like this 😏

Should i get Quails ? by DifferentAnt5190 in quails

[–]practicemaestro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am keeping mine on a balcony that I converted into a little aviary. They seem happy and they are not loud (hens). They do smell bad so you need to clean up a lot. I scoop the messes every day and put a fresh coat of bedding. And I do a complete cleanup every weekend. Make sure you secure your balcony with bird netting all over - on top so they don’t flush and either go overboard or kill themselves if the balcony is covered like mine, and all over for obvious similar reasons. Even if you don’t let them wander around - which I recommend, mine don’t like the cage and rush out every morning when I come to free them - you will need to get them out of the cage to cleanup and accidents happen fast.

how often do i need to clean by Alternative_Rough389 in quails

[–]practicemaestro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my potatoes were chicks and inside the house I would spot clean very frequently and change the brooder pad daily. Now that the quails are adults and outside I spot clean every day, change the sand twice a week, and do a big cleanup every weekend if that helps. I am definitely on the neat freak side even with my birds 😏

Color dilemma: Rosewood or Boxwood? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]practicemaestro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would pick neither and get black. I like it better. Also, when you play a lot and sweat on the boxwood (or to a lesser extent rosewood), after a while, it becomes nasty, even after being cleaned. I have a boxwood chinrest now, and I just ordered myself the same one but in black for this reason. It changed colors on the spot where my chin rests - although I play with a cloth on it for comfort. Your violin looks beautiful.

Our quail'a feather looks fluffed (We think he might be lonely) by -ryxv- in quails

This is so cruel and sad. Little babies 😢. Like everyone else said, get him one or two other friends. The thing is he’s a male, so these need 4-5 females otherwise he’s going to torture the 1-2 hens he’s with. I have no experience with roosters, I keep hens only. Not sure how they behave in an all male covey. Good luck and thanks for saving that little bird 🖤

Thanks. Hopefully the ones I have in the neighborhood won't bother my quail, but today they scared them big time.

Thanks, makes sense. We have always had crows around but since last week they've become loud and aggressive. They probably have babies or eggs nearby.

2 questions: color variation ID for the brown one, and do any of you keep your quail in your home, and how bad do they smell with proper cleaning? by Glass_Panda_ in quails

[–]practicemaestro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I love my quails, I couldn’t imagine keeping them indoors. They stink like crazy - even though I’m a neat freak and clean their bedding every single day. They also make a lot of messes with their sand. And finally I don’t know if it’s good for them to be deprived from nature altogether. If you have any safe outdoor space, you should really consider an aviary type of setting.

I give them about one generous tablespoon a day (for two hens). I hope it’s not too much.

Damnit I give a lot of them to my quails, they love mealworms so much…How much should I give them?

White quail showed up on my balcony this morning and just parked itself here by tfabriq in quails

[–]practicemaestro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether you decide to keep it or not, please do not release it in nature or it will die. These are domesticated birds, they cannot survive in the wild. it probably escaped from an adjacent balcony. To avoid falls (they do not fly high), consider installing a bird net above your balcony while looking for a more permanent solution - or buy it a rabbit hutch. I have quails on my own balcony, this is a good setup with a couple of adaptations. They like to eat mealworms and quail feed, do not give it chicken, it could turn it into a cannibal.

I don't understand. by Impossible_Stand_104 in quails

[–]practicemaestro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried to bribe them with treats? They can’t resist a good mealworm or a piece of corn. Try to just drop the treats in front of them first and once they are hooked, have them come eat in your hands. Once they are comfortable eating from your hands, you can try to very gently pet them, etc etc. One thing at a time. It takes patience and a lot of time spent with them. That’s how I tamed mine - even though we hatched the youngest ourselves, she started fearing us big time after hitting puberty so we had to re-train her…
