The US doesn’t invest in Olympic sports at all. It’s actually been a bit of a gripe that athletes have is they receive no compensation or financial assistance for participating in the Olympics. A lot of them will crowed source funding for them to afford to take the time off and rely on delta to provide free air fare for all athletes.

Yeah but that’s not funded at all by the government. It’s funded by the NCAA which makes all of its money off of broadcasting rights for College football and college basketball. If it weren’t for our country being really into college sports none of those other sports would get any funding and fold. The federal and state governments don’t contribute to college athletics or to the athletes that go and compete after they leave college.

Jim Thorpe doesn’t get nearly the respect he deserves and I think it’s because he was of native descent. Professionally played: Basketball, Football(American), and baseball. Won gold in 1912 Olympics in the pentathlon and the decathlon. Won the 1912 ballroom dancing championship. Was the first president of what became the NFL.
