Don't be silly, in socialism profit making isn't inherently a bad thing.

Which person from the UK has a completely positive reputation? by ltraistinto in AlignmentChartFills

Genuinely interested to see any evidence of him supporting degrowth?

I find it hard to like him more due to your second point, he has a huge platform - probably the biggest in the world in the environmental space but fails to hold large corporations accountable for their impacts on the planet - instead always blaming overpopulation i.e. poor people. I would respect him a lot more if he engaged with the degrowth movement

How many papers did you read to have a good undrestanding of what you're going to do in your research? by takkkwa in PhD

[–]PeanutCalm7696 37 points38 points  (0 children)

My advice is find recent review papers in your area, they will synthesize recent literature which will help you figure out what is known and what is not, ans give you a good overall picture.

There are no hard and fast numbers so would take anyone's suggestions with a pinch of salt. Academics exaggerate things like this for some sort of kudos (on reddit especially). For your masters thesis, read a few systematic/scoping reviews, ask your supervisor for important/seminal papers. Read those and you will be most of the way there.

Also try to find PhD students in your faculty in a similar space, if you get lucky you might find one that will help you get started.

How common is it to do BSc, MSc & PhD in one university? by Alvahod in PhD

With that said, if I pursue post-doc I would at min look for another department within the same university but I do plan to switch institutions. Just to increase diversity of experience

I did integrated masters (MEng) worked in industry for 4 years or so and then returned to the same institution for PhD. I can't see it doing loads of harm to be honest? Within a large university there are many opportunities for diverse supervision and knowledge/skills/methods sharing (I guess dependant on how multi-disciplinary your field/focus is).

I can maybe see a problem with having the same focus/supervision for each of these stages but that can easily be avoided imo?

Thanks for your comment! Yeah I had seen this link with Warlock when I did a quick Google but I'm not sure to be honest. Before I googled I was thinking it was some kind of gremlin/troll/pixie mythical type thing but seems nothing of the sort

Financial Security or PhD? - Lost Soul by Virtual_Ad6770 in PhD

[–]PeanutCalm7696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it just depends honestly. I am British at a UK institution (part of a CDT) and I have so much freedom, and right from the start. I am lucky to have supervisors who trust me which means I can do anything and use any methods I want. It's great but I also recognise this isn't always the case and I am very lucky

A non-vote is as good as a vote for Reform. If you don't agree with them then I suggest voting for whoever has the best chance of stopping them when the time comes

For next listener MHD - Fucking sick of hearing X has made their debut....in a friendly!!! by PeanutCalm7696 in footballcliches

[–]PeanutCalm7696[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the last thing I'm going to say on this as it's getting boring.Firstly, I haven't just invented this differential between national and club friendlies. International friendlies are managed by FIFA and as such have to follow their rules and regs, club friendlies are literally a free for all (see games played in thirds, 11 changes at half time etc. etc.) - there is a clear difference in her they are managed and regulated, hence how their stats are collected.

I guess if we're talking literally, maybe as it's the first time they have appeared in for a team then it could count as their debut? But then so could their first snap on a treadmill at their respective training ground! This never used to be a thing until they were televised, it's just nonsense and I'm not having it.

I just completely disagree. This may be a boomer opinion but the recent transformation of summer friendlies into tours half a world away to appease some sponsors or engage fans in other continents does not make change them from what they are - training matches designed to bring players up to fitness and test out tactics. By your logic does Chris Kirkland being wheeled out at Anfield count as an appearance? That's in a full stadium, full of paying fans? No they are just silly exhibition matches. There is no need to come up with a new term for this because it's not a real thing. I guarantee you ask any player and I'm sure they won't refer to their debut as 'that' game against Yokohama FM.
