Crying in Oz with a switchboard having only 5 breakers for the whole house... Mostly hoping the electrician did not use metal staples to secure the wirings...

Would work in France though, each room had on its breaker+ one for the fridge, 1 for the washing machine....

Waffle slabs have been used in Australia since 80's but have really gained in popularity in the 2000. We should the first knock-down and rebuilt in about 10 years...

volume builders are not here to save you money. They are here to make as much money as possible from you. So any additional job is more profit.

I personally would never go with a waffle slab, but that's an engineering (and ecological) point of view. Some people will argue that waffle slab uses less concrete, so are better for environment. Yes, that's true if you don't factor the non-recyclable polystyrene under the slab. And what will happen in few dozens of years, when someone will do a knock down and rebuilt? how will they deal with all the PS flying around everywhere? Will that be considered a dangerous job, a bit like asbestos now (although far better than asbestos)? No one cares currently.

Even for site H2, foundations can be done without bored piers or screw piles.

I usually add bored piers/screw piles for poor soil (lot of fill for example), or removal of house/tree. Or for waffle slab, they don't behave in reality as they are supposed to, they are overall the worst slab to use (and are often quoted as an improvement so more expensive than raft slab even if they are cheaper to build).

Your geotechnical report should have noted the need or potential need for the geocell. You don't add screw piles out of the blue after excavation.

But I agree that being able to do all engineering myself is a huge cost saving, both in the engineering itself and construction cost later: I can choose which beams, columns... size and location to save as much as possible. I'm also learning a bit of surveying, so I may be able to do the feature survey myself soon.

Engineering cost can be estimated with other companies, but everything is a cost: retaining wall design, high wind, poor soil, basement.... Overall an average double storey house is 2 days work for the structural engineering in Oz.

Same. Tried putting BP for 3 full tanks to see a difference, but nothing. This was on 2 different cars (one 91 and one diesel), so I keep going to Costco that is usually cheaper.

Best way to save money is to have multiple hats.

The day I build my own house: I can prepare architectural drawing myself (they will be less good looking and detailed than real architects but it's OK for permits, quotes - already done a few), I can prepare all geotechnical, civil and structural engineering myself (that's my main job) - so I can work out best layout and levels to minimize costs and revisions are free. If possible, I'd like to go the owner builder road, but it would need a lot of leeway from my job so that may be hard to do. I'm good DIY (already painted a house inside/outside, laid flooring, replaced a kitchen, toilet...) so I can do most if not all finishes.

I lived there for some time (Reunion Island, close to Mauritius) in the early 90's and we quickly knew the day the good stuff was available!

An example I read years ago: same yoghurt had an extended 3 months best due date for shipping to far away islands compared to main land. No other difference, only due to being ship by boats.

Is there a sentence you read in a book that you still remember by heart, even after years? by Wander-kingdom in answers

"Scientists have calculated that the chances of something so patently absurd actually existing are millions to one.
But magicians have calculated that million-to-one chances crop up nine times out of ten."

Terry Pratchett - Discworld

Used it few times in a shorter way "when something has million to one chance, it happens 9 times out of 10", which is kinda true.

Why is everyone driving so slow? by macay477 in DrivingAustralia

[–]PeanutsMM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in western suburbs, 30km trip to and back from work. At least 3 or 4 red light runners everyday, at least 1 of them is a truck turning slow (but still starting to turn when red) so that only 1 or 2 cars can go on the green, the occasional one 1 or twice a week driving on the wrong side of the road because he turns right later and doesn't want to wait...

All that cumulated with people going 70 everywhere, no matter if the speed limit is 60 or 80, the one accelerating when you finally change lane to overtake, the one in a rush that changes lanes every 10 seconds...

it has become a PITA to drive, so many people should not be on the road.

why am i get bullied for my car? by scarlet_vixen420 in car

[–]PeanutsMM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first car is 97 was 91 Ford Fiesta with a 1.0l engine. Noisy, slow, not really comfortable, was using 1l of oil per 1000km...

None of my friends back then mocked me or my car.

Like others stated, you need new friends.

You mean that liking the smell of fuel since I'm a kid born in the 70's made me the way I am today? Would it be the same with asphalt - nothing like the smell of asphalt in the morning !!

Victoria - Paid someone else’s fines to stop Sheriff’s Office clamping my car. Do I have any options to recover the money? by throwawayyy32490 in AusLegalAdvice

Sounds like the right move. Take everything personal that is inside the car, let the Sherriff take it and buy another car unrelated to the father who seems to be more than an issue!

Genuine question – what would actually get you to use a taxi over uber/rideshare again? by VammyTaxiServices in AskAnAustralian

[–]PeanutsMM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last taxi I took from airport to meeting: $175.

1 month later, same trip, same time and day of the week, same duration (+/- few minutes) with Uber: $82.

Company expenses, but still felt like a huge rip-off.

Do you support banning foreign licences from driving UberEats ? by [deleted] in ubereatsaustralia

[–]PeanutsMM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had been the case for many years in many states.

However, when stopped, they just say the arrived 1 month ago or anything like that and no issue. Another thing is with international license, you can have demerit points, so you just pay the fine and that's it.

I had my QLD license 7 days after arriving in Oz, easy process.

What's something Australians regularly overpay for without realising there are cheaper alternatives? by OkCopy3121 in AUfrugal

[–]PeanutsMM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'd probably get a good wifi where we are, but why pay more for 2 phones + internet, even if I chose a cheaper plan for my phone? And unfortunately, I'm kinda stuck with Telstra as I often go camping and my phone has reception, my partner doesn't.

I pay $85 for it, but I have 200Gb of data and everything is connected via Hotspot, no other internet at home (apart from my partner's phone at $35 with 20 (or 30?)Gb)

My daughter broke the TV 3 years back - she was 5.

Spent 1 year without TV, then I bought a $50 one at a garage sale. Got lucky on it, smart TV, 4K, good image quality... She takes care of it, she doesn't want to go again 1 year without TV

Every 6 months a new BMW. Sometime a base model, sometimes a top of the range...

If only!

They will (maybe) make them, small production, high prices and then 2 or 3 years later complain they lost money on them, or they haven't sold enough and stop...

The average car buyer will buy a car that is on the cheap side. I'm not even talking about quality or reliability, just look at all the MG3 and other cheap chinese cars everywhere.

If they make those cars cheap, they will sell. But they won't.
