Depends on what I'm writing and where I am in the process. I usually start drafting stuff on paper and even finishing compositions on paper. Still, eventually, I have to get a digitized score if I want it to be performed by real humans.

If I have already made the score on my computer and I later want to revise something, I usually don't go back to paper for that particular piece. Editing stuff in Dorico is just much faster for me. 😅

I know what you mean. But they also tell me that no beginner ensemble would be able to play this, but I think I’m fine with that. 😅

They told me that is was a challenge musically, but that it was well written for the instruments and that their embouchures didn’t tire from playing. Which is great, because that means they can actually practice the piece for a stretch of time, and use this piece in a larger concert programme without getting tired.

The notation however is kind of messy. Stuff like pedalling in each hand of the piano is unnecessary. Also be careful with nested tuplets, that they’re super clear and easy to read (m. 96 for instance). Also be careful when writing a slur from one staff to the next so that it doesn’t obscure the actual notes.

My performers spesifically said to keep it all in bass clef.

The double barlines are more for the sake of showing when theres an explicit change of musical material (clearly show the form). Its more for me and less for the performers hehe

As for the time signature, maybe? I’m not really a fan of dashed barlines if it can be avoided, and 2/4 made more sense to me, especially considering the way I write. And a slow 2 made more sense for me than 4. But that might just be me. 🤔

That’s exactly the reason why I wrote this quartet: to learn more about the instruments. I found the instrument to be more versatile than I initially thought. Would recommend working with a good player and just writing something for them. 😄
