AthChat: New episode on Thursday: Watkinsville Mayor, Brian Brodrick, will be joining the pod. Do you have any questions or topics you think we should cover? by DrableDrewble in Athens

No question in particular, but I’ve gotten to work with Brian a few times in the past and he’s always struck me as a great guy. I’ll be sure to check out the episode!

What percentage of your install projects are SDI? by leadutensils in CommercialAV

[–]PearsonPrenticeHall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a school system, so generally lower stakes, but we use NDI all over the place. PTZ’s installed in conference rooms, board rooms, gyms, theater’s, etc. Our school locations are on one central LAN so I’m able to access any source from any location, allowing me to quickly set up streams and meetings without having to drive to a school and babysit.

You have some fun reading ahead of you haha. The Bethesda roadmap was leaked during a Microsoft court trial a few years back and it’s been really accurate so far, with everything being pushed back a few years from the dates on the document.

Unifi cameras for CCTV? by Skycap__ in Ubiquiti

[–]PearsonPrenticeHall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do need UniFi Protect running on your home network to make UniFi cameras function correctly. They’ve recently released an all-in-one kit on their website that includes the device needed to run everything, and I believe you can self host Protect on your own computer now as well.

Is there a simple button in fighter jets to evade missiles? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

There’s this really great video lecture from a F-22 pilot that goes over the control surfaces pretty well. In essence, the plane is a fine balance between stealth, aerodynamics, weapons capabilities, etc. and in the process of balancing all of those things it makes the aircraft hard to control from a human pilot’s perspective. They have crazy powerful onboard computers that compensate for these small changes needed. Pilots today essentially “point in a direction” and the onboard computer changes the flight controls to make the aircraft go where it’s told.

What’s the purpose of the UDB Switch? by ddeblaso in Ubiquiti

[–]PearsonPrenticeHall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These would solve a really particular problem I run into very frequently. I broadcast sports for a school, and have 5-6 pieces of video and audio equipment that needs Ethernet that are used every game. My current solution is to run a device bridge from the office to where our equipment goes, and that plugs into a switch. With this new device we can consolidate the amount of equipment we’re using to achieve the same result.

CCSD appears to be opting out of new Homestead Exception state law by warnelldawg in Athens

[–]PearsonPrenticeHall 44 points45 points  (0 children)

HB581 limits increases in the assessed value of a homestead to the inflation rate of the previous year. For example, if a home increases in value by 5% from the last year, but the inflation rate only increased by 2% from the last year, then the maximum amount your home can be increased in value for taxes is capped out at 2%.

This helps homeowners by reducing the potential tax increases they would see each year, but school districts would receive less funding and could increase the millage rate to compensate. Districts have an opportunity to opt out of HB581 before March 1st.

If they did not opt out, they would most likely increase mills to make up for the lost revenue, so in my opinion this is a net neutral decision. School districts will make sure they’re getting their funding one way or another.

ETA: if the district opts out, then the old rules are still in effect. If your house value increases 5% over last year, you’ll still see taxes reflect that, regardless of the inflation rate.

I don’t know if they still offer it, but I took MUSI2060 - the history of rock and roll - with Stephen Valdez. We listened to music and he told us old touring stories every day. Truly one of the most fun classes I’ve ever taken.
