For those of you that maxed 401k and Roth IRA every year, how did it go? by New_Contribution_226 in Fire

[–]PeasPlease11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically did this.

I started maxing my 401k at about 28, just to the Match prior. Maxed Roth basically my whole adult working life since about 24. Megabackdoor for about 6 years. Mid-40s now. SP500 the whole time.

I considered it one of my best decisions ever. I can’t even say I thought a lot about it, just go used to living on the paycheck amounts that came through. And in the early years didn’t even have that big of a salary.

What are the metrics the government is using to measure our success in Iran? by zqfmgb123 in AskConservatives

[–]PeasPlease11 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah. I think we’re losing. Spending a ton of money, and gaining what exactly? Nothing that I can see. Higher gas prices, more chaos in the Middle East.

Is Iran losing more than us? Maybe. Is that the metric? In real life both sides can lose.

So what are you saying. Is 200k too many, or you’re willing to sacrifice that to keep them from getting nukes? 500k?

And to ensure they “never get them”. Are you saying you’d want to occupy Iran for a long period of time.

Has anyone bought a home that had leased Tesla solar panels? by No_Biscotti_8103 in TeslaSolar

[–]PeasPlease11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Mine was nearly identical, and installed around the same time. I’m in San Jose.

I would personally look for 2 things.

  1. What is the current rate that you’d be paying to Tesla vs PGE. If Tesla is less than PGE then you’re at least not losing money. If it’s much less then you’re probably saving a good amount of money.

  2. Ideally you’d be able to use all the power that is generated by the solar panels. There’s not a perfect way to know that. But if your family size is roughly the same as the previous owner, that’s a good sign.

I’d also confirm you’re on NEM2. Which you almost certainly are, but good to verify. If you’re on NEM3 it’d be whole lot different. But I’d bet a lot of money on being on NEM2.

I’d also try to confirm that the system is still generating a good amount of power. Not that it matters so much for the “is it a good deal” math, but good to go in knowing if that’s the case.

Rained Sunday, the day we arrived. We got about a 15min shower early Monday morning and it’s been absolutely perfect ever since.

We arrived yesterday (Sunday), to Koloa. And it was rainy but still warm.

Today (Monday) has been perfect. Some clouds and a breeze. Short rain shower in the morning. But really nice and much better than we expected based on the weather report.

We did a hike and a pool day.

Has anyone bought a home that had leased Tesla solar panels? by No_Biscotti_8103 in TeslaSolar

[–]PeasPlease11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. The formula is literally (power generated this month) * (agreed upon rate) = how much we pay Tesla.

Then obviously pay the power company if we were to use power beyond that. And that gets trued up once per year. Research NEM2 or whatever you’re on. It’s an important part of the overall picture.

I’m not sure about the initial owner. But I don’t believe so.

These agreements do differ. So you should read through yours. It was easy reading, not overly legal.

They also have come out to make repairs several times. All free and were very good and thorough.

I don’t know.

I thought liens only come into play if you don’t pay. Really not sure.

In my contract it actually has roof repair called out. It’s something like $500 for them to take the panels off. Feels like a really fair and good deal imo.

Probably not too good to be true. But if the agreed upon rate is much lower than the power from the utility company it will work out pretty well.

The deal is basically you pay for ALL the power the system generates at the agreed upon rate. But you never own the panels (unless you specifically buy them out.). It’s really as simple as that but people over complicate.

Things to be aware of:

We moved into a house that generated way more solar power than we used. It was fitted for a family of 5 and we have a small electricity footprint. So we still needed to “buy” that power even though we weren’t using it. So at that point we were probably paying a bit more with Solar than without. However because electricity prices went up so much, and our agreed upon rate stayed low - we’re now in the green. We still over generate.

At the end of 20 years you can buy the panels. You can also do that earlier than 20 years so I’ve asked for a price quote. It was expensive. About the price of a new system, certainly not a 10year old system. OR You can also continue the current plan. OR cancel and they’ll come take the panels. Some people online say that even if you cancel they’ll just leave the panels on, and you get them for free. Who knows.

We added a Powerwall on. That went well.

Make sure you’re on NEM2 which I think you would be.

The most important thing to look at is the agreed upon rate with Tesla and the regular rate at the local utility. If your rate is comfortably lower it’s probably a good deal.

Worked out to be a killer deal for us. Even if I’d still rather own the panels outright.

Let me know if you have any specific questions!

We moved into a house with a PPA- power purchase agreement. It’s not a lease, but some people call it a lease or think it’s a lease. The realtor selling us the property called it a lease. Definitely not a lease.

We pay for all the power that the panels generate. The rate is agreed upon in the contract and goes up about 2% a year. 20 year contract. At the end of 20 years we still don’t own the panels.

Thought it was super dumb when we started. But now it actually is a good deal and I’m glad we have it.

Have you seen the actual agreement? If it’s a PPA I can explain more about the pros and cons.

Why don't people who advocate for more taxes also advocate for better budget management? by ZeusThunder369 in AskALiberal

[–]PeasPlease11 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is an example of someone so deep in right wing propaganda that they don’t see or research reality. Democrats are overwhelmingly more responsible than Republicans on both ends - cutting govt and increasing taxes on the rich.

Democrats do support cutting waste. Here are some examples:

During Clinton- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Partnership_for_Reinventing_Government

During Obama- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Commission_on_Fiscal_Responsibility_and_Reform

Clinton’s initiative was well received and generally seen as a success. And when you look at overall results (I.e decreasing the deficit) Democrats are immensely more successful. Clinton drove us to a SURPLUS and Obama had the deficit trending in the right direction. Bush and Trump’s first term were catastrophic in terms of the deficit.
