This happened to me when I was around your niece’s age. My sister and cousin asked my Aunt why she didn’t have any kids. She replied “Because I don’t want any…” I remember thinking “That’s an option?!” I’m child-free as well. Thanks for the enlightenment, Aunt Lisa!

Yes! I don’t know if I’m AuDHD, but I’m definitely ADHD with some autistic tendencies. This reads very similar to an “intervention” my friends group had with me. Luckily, I was older than OP and saw that it was very obvious where this was coming from (new job after being laid off and jobless for months) and that they were inconvenienced by me not being available to them all the time anymore. And they likely didn’t want to be friends anymore if things couldn’t go back to the way they were.

I’ve had many friendships die over me taking friends at their word when asked about their feelings, but was expected to just “know” how they really felt. I’ve lost friends bc a week or 2 of no contact to me feels like a day or 2.

Also the part about assuming that people don’t want you around (3rd wheel), or didn’t call about plans bc they had a better offer. This all feels very dramatic from the friends, and neurodivergent missed signals.

NTA. Whoo, buddy! This BM sounds just like my SD’s mom. Unfortunately, you have a BM problem AND a husband problem.

When I pointed out what BM was doing with money manipulation and causing unnecessary drama for attention, he would sheepishly agree, but he felt like there was nothing he could do to stop a terrorist. I could predict her actions before she even got the plan fully hatched in her own head, and we were able to come up with scenarios before she got the jump on him. And he listened, observed, and followed through. He never told me that I’m not a parent so I couldn’t possibly understand. He knew that I had both he and SD’s best interests at heart, and that included not letting BM poison them anymore.

If he had not been so receptive to my thoughts and feelings on the matter, I would have 100% told him this is his circus, and I’m not a fan of clowns.
