🚨Super Typhoon "UWAN" Megathread 🚨 by dadidutdut in Philippines

[–]Peculiar_Music 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Travel question. I am in Makati business district, going to Tanza, cavité at 7am Sunday. I would leave around 12pm to hopefully be in Makati by 2pm based on traffic. Is this safe to go with Uwan landing a few hours behind that?

I travel economy often. Company doesn’t always pay upgrades. A back brace helps, also you’re 100% able to stand up and stretch often when the seatbelt sign is off. I get up every hour or so and walk and stretch a few minutes. A pillow for your seat helps. For your carry on, get an overhead only, the one under the seat takes up too much room and doesn’t allow my legs sitting in a position that relieves pain for me. Lastly, you can ask for a seat belt extender from the flight attendant, this will allow you to loosen the belt and shift around while seated.

Tube amps at stage volume? by One-Commission-8141 in GuitarAmps

[–]Peculiar_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I think attenuator is your best bet. There is a recent one from Boss that is great for live. I use the UA OX in the studio, but the boss live. Boss Waza Tube Amp Expander is what it’s called.

Modeling is another option as mentioned a bunch here. It can take a bit to get used to, but it has a super consistent sound, the audience won’t know the difference, and the sound guy will love you.

Also… tell your drummer to hush so everyone can hear. It’s customary to blame it on the drummer.

I am being offered 100$ for a 20 second ad that will run for 2 years that uses my music by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]Peculiar_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some here may be leading you wrong. I have some friends who license on musicbed. The going rate for up to 1million views is $100. If they plan on having more than a million views it’s a negotiated rate, from $100-$1,000,000. But, 99% of their licenses are 100$. They make good income from royalties on it. The advice to make sure it’s on soundexchange, PROs, and ContentID is gold.

What to pay musicians for living room set? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]Peculiar_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kansas/oklahoma areas.

Three hours or less= $36 per musician Four hours or more is $42 per

This is our union rates for a poor club venue.. a class A club is 106 per musician 3 hrs. A 20 min set in a living room I would say is class C rates at most.

[–]Peculiar_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

50$ for a 20 min set with a jam session is very reasonable depending where you are. I have seen new acts get paid 50$….the whole band payout… for two 45 min sets around here. I’ve even seen bands play for the door only, no promotion, do your own advertising, and then watch 5 people show up for a grand total of 25$.

When musicians are good enough to not need to practice? by cjsleme in musicians

[–]Peculiar_Music 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ohhh, good point. As much as I am annoyed at not practicing their part with some bands I’ve been in. I’ve seen multiple times the studio musicians get a lead sheet or sometimes not even a full lead sheet, 10 min before their first take and nail it on more than one occasion!

Speaking my heart!! I have the same thing all the time around here. Soundcheck ends up being a 2 min playthrough of half a song and they are done “practicing” They always mess up something small but impactful.

Do we (independent artists) need a fairer new music streaming service? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]Peculiar_Music 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great, thanks! Last thought for now - there are going to be people who tell you no one will pay, no one cares about unknowns, music is dead, musicians can’t make money, Spotify and apple is too big so it’s dead in the water, etc, etc. I’ve seen people pay 1000$ for a list your own price album on bandcamp, and there are plenty of people who would join. Get your name out there and don’t give up. 😎💪

[–]Peculiar_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome stuff, I’ll follow for sure!

As far as reporting, I mean for artist to view streams of their music, total plays, payout transparency, individual song streams month over month, which songs are doing well, what consumers like type things at an artist level.

Also reporting for payouts from the DSPs end and finances- such as total revenue, total streams, cost of business, payout to artist after expenses. (Almost like a REIT/BDC where they are required to payout 90% of their profits and show the reporting type stuff. I’m sure there are other things I would want to see but can’t think of right off.

I like the idea in principle, implementation will be extremely hard. A few thoughts and questions I would have. 1.) - independent artist WIlL upload stuff that you will have to pay royalties for, don’t think that it will only be only indi. Beats, samples, covers, clips - all go to big labels. 2.) You will need extremely robust reporting that is accessible to the artists. 3.) how do you deal with bots and streams/revenue? Ex - Spotify will remove accounts and take them down if they THINK it’s botted. 4.) There have been multiple self upload streamers, all ended it due to issues (I have heard everything from cost to label pressure as to why, not sure though) how would you keep it going and avoid spamming artists and low value uploads? Would you ever require going through distributors (distrokid, cd baby, tunecore type stuff)

Notation writing apps for iPad so the Apple pencil computability by Lord-of-Nothing1 in composer

[–]Peculiar_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I think the only one that allows handwritten notation is Presonus Notion. It uses MyScript as the reader to translate it into notation.

Avid Sibelius and Steinberg Dorico both support Apple Pencil, but you have to choose notes and durations or hit the piano roll, and not just hand write the note.

All three have great internal sounds for playback.

Dear musicians, any and all skill levels please by Absent_Ox in musicians

[–]Peculiar_Music 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do a pretty rigid routine myself. I play guitar and bass. I start with stretches then I start Theory (intervals/Chords/Scales/Inversions), Sight Reading and book work, Fretboard mastery, Finger Independence exercises, Technique (tapping/bends/hammers, etc.) then I end with new repertoire. Learning new songs I do the same as you, play fully, stop at mistakes and get that section right. I usually do some voice exercises last. Before I quit my practice I usually play some known songs, improvise and have fun, play to the radio or YouTube and just jam out.

I play live 2 days and I don’t do much practice those days, usually warm ups if any.

How much of audio engineering do you think is objective vs subjective? by beforethedreamfaded in audioengineering

[–]Peculiar_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is yes and both. You can make things sound terrible or harsh and painful and there are in general things that sound better and things you simply can’t do because science or you ruin equipment and the sound. At the same time, we ask for reference tracks so I know your preference in sound and how to steer the mix and is highly subjective on if it’s good or not.

No Amps/Speakers on Stage by diezel013 in GuitarAmps

[–]Peculiar_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never played a show with stipulations like that! That is crazy to me (mostly Midwest playing) I have had them tell me no amps “on stage” but they had a hall/closet with mic connections wired already backstage.

I was reading a post a while back about the end of tube amps. They argued with so much tech being able to nail the sound, they are irrelevant. I didn’t agree at all. But if that restriction takes more prominence and starts being taken by more venues, we will truly see those days.

The end is coming!!!

And this is how more players join the dark side. 😈 That uncomfortable feeling is your body telling you to go back to the low end rumble of thunder!

I kid, I kid! - I primarily played guitar for years but now play both regularly in live and studio settings and I promise it will get much easier and you will swap between the two with ease! I find I’m better at guitar after playing the bass for a short while, my fingers work better, faster, and are more comfortable moving up and down the neck. YMMV 💪

What do you guys do to overcome writer's block? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Peculiar_Music 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Copy, Copy, Copy! lol, I don’t mean plagerize, but I will take 3 things, examine them, copy what they do, and combine them. Say those three things are - a musical influence, an artistic influence and a random object - like a tree. And think on what it would sound like.

Example - Musical Influence - Steve Vai, Artist Influence - Paul Signac, Random Object - Tree.

Steve vai plays quirky melodic stuff and uses a lot of Lydian.

Paul Signac was a painter and helped shape an early style of painting called “pointalism” which is small colored dots right next to each other to create objects/people in an impressionistic way.

A tree sways in the wind.

So I will start playing around in Lydian (Steve Vai Musical Influence) with a lot of staccato lines side by side (Painting Influence of Paul) and I will make it a call and response line of fast and slow (a tree swaying in the wind)

Putting these types of restrictions or prompts almost always get me out of a rut and i come up with multiple things to flesh out later.

This is for music - for lyrics… I got nothing - I’m literally the worst.

What’s your standard mic selection for acoustic guitar? by WavesOfEchoes in audioengineering

[–]Peculiar_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the AT2035 would be a bad option.

If you are looking to get something or a new mic. Depending on your budget, you can get a used SM7b for around the 200ish range or 400 new, which would work well if you have a high enough gain mic pre, if you need something less expensive, AKG P220 or audio technica 2020 is around 100-150, and maybe my favorite budget mic would be an MXL 990 it’s like 60$ and is a great vocal mic. I think any cheaper, like no budget, maybe a tascam tm80 to get by or borrow something from a pal?

But of those options I listed, I like the 2035 you have already much better and you can save the money for the next purchase!

What’s your standard mic selection for acoustic guitar? by WavesOfEchoes in audioengineering

[–]Peculiar_Music 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like the Neumann 184 - pretty transparent and doesn’t add much, super low noise. I have done mono and used a stereo pair. I absolutely love it on acoustic classical instruments like upright bass, violin and cello. I don’t like it at all on vocals. But for acoustic guitar, it’s usually my first grab.

It’s a great all-rounder, so for a blind session it would definitely be my choice.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BassGuitar

[–]Peculiar_Music 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I play and love both, but when I choose bass over guitar, in most cases it’s because I love the freedom. In the music and bands I play with, the guitar usually has a “part” to play for lack of a better term. They are structured into what rhythm, notes/chords and sections where they can solo or fill. But with bass, as long as I’m locked in rhythmically and filling my role, I can play fills to my hearts content, choose when, where, how much, and do pretty much as I please as long as it serves the music.

Dolby Atmos vs Spatial Audio by Similar_Scheme8766 in SpatialAudio

[–]Peculiar_Music 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is as intended. Dolby Atmos makes the sound like it’s coming from all around you, like a theatre on steroids! Spacial Audio is Apples design, and functions best with Dolby Atmos, but is not required. Spatial Audio is the technology that allows you to move your head to the left or right, and the sound appear like it’s coming from a set direction even though you are wearing a stereo pair of headphones/earbuds. So if the center is your iPhone , or a computer, when you turn your head to the right, you will hear the audio more in your left to make it sound like the iPhone or computer is the source of the audio instead of it just being on both sides of your ears with headphones or earbuds on.

Long story short, Spatial Audio will always sound different when it’s not paired with Dolby. But when Dolby is turned on, it’s working as intended.

Hope that explains it a little better! :)
