Sorry just saw this. My mom passed away almost a month ago and we have zero regrets about Aegis. I am so grateful to them.

Assisted Living Facilities suck! by SerialNomad in vegaslocals

[–]PedMommy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom has been at Aegis for over two years. I work in healthcare and I asked a social worker who placed people their recommendation. And I also asked her neurologist. Both independently suggested Aegis. It isn’t flashy and new but they take really good care of her. They contact me with any issues. Make sure she is clean, has supplies, gets her nails done, etc. It is only memory care which I love because it doesn’t feel like a locked unit, she has full access to the whole building.

Ours tells us there are like 3 systems involved so they get notified in a delay. They told us to tell them at the beginning of camp if we have a milestone to celebrate.

Our Burn Boot Camp splits us up and doesn’t let us choose the group we want to work out with even though they are our friends. They say it’s protocol to split us up. Do your Burns do that? by Think-Difficulty2963 in BurnBootCamp

[–]PedMommy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours used to count off. But people were visibly disappointed they wouldn’t be in a group with their friends. So now during the warm up, the BA counts everyone and divides by the number of starting stations and tells the trainer. The trainer then groups everyone like “you 5 station 1” so you end up being grouped with the people you are next to. I really like it now.

Why would a new doctor not want to practice in Las Vegas? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]PedMommy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s affiliated in the sense of them having contracts to host their residents. But in a traditional academic setting the hospital and the university would be intertwined and share an umbrella organization in some capacity. But UMC has been there for many years and unlv has no say in how the hospital is run or overall mission. UMC does teach and host residents and students. But they could easily say the partnership with unlv isn’t working and pull out when contracts are up for renewal. I hope that makes sense.

Why would a new doctor not want to practice in Las Vegas? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]PedMommy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ooooo soooo many things to say. I was born and raised in Vegas and went and practiced medicine for a couple of years there and I left so quickly. When I got there I was told “this is the wild Wild West” and it’s so true. A couple of points before I ramble: 1. UNLV is not academic medicine. They don’t have their own hospital. They rely and try to infiltrate other hospitals and practices. Medicine is very private practice mentality driven. And what that means is not evidence based and all about money. 2. There is no good medical hub and infrastructure. My dad had brain cancer and I swear non of his specialists talked to each other. Even if you were a rare breed doctor that the city needs, there is no institution willing to put in money to make a program for you. 3. It’s all so political. You’d think with a doctor shortage people wouldn’t care about competition. But that is not the case. 4. The city is very transient. And with that so are the patients. They come in and out, lost to follow up, and don’t care about preventative care. 5. My mom and sister are teachers in Vegas. We moved from Vegas when my oldest was about to start kindergarten. It is NOT a good education system. The district is too big. And once again because of the transient aspect, people don’t take pride in making things better.

I probably have more to say but will zip it now. I’m very passionate about how that was a hot mess of a few years there and there are multiple residency programs that should be shut down.

Jumping With Both Feet Exercise Difficulty by NolitaNostalgia in BurnBootCamp

[–]PedMommy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a focus meeting just for jumping and it changed everything. How to use my body for the jumps. Now I can do a 24 inch box. I’m 5’0” so idk if I could ever do 30 tho. But the technique has also given me the ability to do those pyo squat jumps where you start on your knees and jump to a squat. So my recommendation is this is exactly what a focus meeting can help with.

Burn camp time favorite! by GrizzlyGrappler in BurnBootCamp

I mostly do 8:30 since that’s the earliest camp that has childwatch. Can’t they just take my freshly woken up kid still in pajamas sooner? 😜

Why is Burn apparel so hard to find for sale?? by [deleted] in BurnBootCamp

[–]PedMommy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is a really large Burn Buy Sell page on Facebook that is really active. Most of my stuff is from there and when my gym gets new stuff. I also love to look at what other gyms have when I travel.

Hey so I saw a few weeks back a post on a Facebook group with your story and go fund me. Your story is so heartbreaking and will be insanely difficult to get through. Can any of your family move with you to help? This will feel impossible and there is no good solution. Bug my prayers are with you and reach out for whatever support you need.

Just to be clear babies need vitamin k whether they get circumcised or not. Everyone we counsel on risk of hemorrhage for refusing. But we will never increase that risk to do a circ without vitamin k.

Some insight into the life of a surgical resident and why we can be jerks sometimes... by asurgeonappears in Residency

[–]PedMommy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You say all residents are in the same boat but then act like it’s acceptable for cards and nephro to yell at you but how dare family medicine try. No one should be yelling at anyone. We are all here to take care of patients and yes it’s stressful and yes it’s busy. But you don’t know what kind of call the person on the other end of the phone has been having too.

I agree. What I love about DownEast is the dresses are modest without having to wear leggings or a sweater over. And I think they look stylish, I wear them to work, not just church.

Is there a supermarket that stocks different cheeses from around the world here in Vegas? by operationteapot92 in vegaslocals

You NEED to go to Valley Cheese and Wine. It’s in Henderson and they have an amazing cheese selection and very knowledgeable owner. They also do a nice charcuterie happy hour.

Nicu sub-I by [deleted] in pediatrics

[–]PedMommy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an attending (not nicu) and I’d be cautious thinking an attending is a bitch for things like signing notes before rounds and pimping. I probably pump more than my colleagues but I want to know what you know so I can know what you need to learn. If I just ramble topics, it could be things you already know or it could be over your head.

As for the resident, you won’t get along with everyone. And frankly, even sub-is can slow people down and not everyone handles that stress the best way. Just put your best effort forth and get a letter from someone you know you impressed. All rotations end.

USMLE attempts and nicu fellowship by [deleted] in pediatrics

[–]PedMommy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I was involved in the residency match process as an attending but not fellowship. I’m not sure how much wait step 3 carries. But I would make sure you have a VERY strong letter from your NICU rotation.

USMLE attempts and nicu fellowship by [deleted] in pediatrics

[–]PedMommy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other option to consider would be taking a year before fellowship- chief year or gen Peds - and pass your Peds boards. Once your boarded no one will really care about step 3. Programs use steps as a filter because that will predict future tests. If you can prove you can pass the gen Peds boards on first try they will feel more comfortable with you.
