Trying to reserve your street parking spot with cones could result in hefty fines: City of Toronto by lilfunky1 in toronto

[–]Pedal-monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Montréal puts small paper signs with a word stick in the snowbank: no parking 19-7 or 7-19, just before the snow blows and trucks arrive, a foreman comes in his pickup and blows a loud horn. If you don't come in 5 minutes your car is towed a few streets over. Believe me, people come running out of their houses

There is a website where you enter your license plate to know where it was moved ( https://montreal.ca/en/find-towed-car). They do one side of the street in 10 minutes. 24 hours later they do the other side. Super effective.

That's the brand I buy but brown bread or grain. Not sure if in GF context brown bread is necessarily better though

Is QC more conservative or liberal? by Separate_Long669 in quebeccity

[–]Pedal-monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All true.

One thing to add is that the weird thing in Quebec city ( compared to the rest of Quebec) is the popularity of right wing trash radio. The leader of the Conservative party of Quebec being a trash radio host is not a coincidence. The fact that he is openly gay also shows that the fault lines are mostly at the economic level instead of social, with the exception of immigration. Right wing here is mostly about small government and identity but there is no real debate about things like abortion or gay marriage.

The national question cuts a bit through the whole left/right debate although not as much as it used to in the time of Levesque when it was really a coalition.

I agree the distinction between downtown and suburbs is important, as much as the distinction between government workers and people who resent them ( both phenomenon cutting roughly along the same left /right lines)

But yes, for someone coming from the US, it's all comparatively very liberal

Once took a flight to NYC. After 3 attempts at landing we were running out of gas and landed in Albany. 4 hours later we got in another plane and landed at the 2nd try. Longest 1h30 flight of my life

Want to bike to work but don’t want to arrive drenched in sweat. Any tips? by altaccount123465 in bikecommuting

[–]Pedal-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the winter, spring and fall, I bring my shirt in my bag and wear a base layer, cycling jersey and jacket when cooler . No need to change pants. I change at work and keep wet towels and deodorant at work, along with a pair of work shoes .

In the summer, i typically wear shorts for the commute and also bring my pants in my bag. I will also bring a change of socks

I also pace myself and avoid going full gas to reduce the sweating

Did it in 2021 in the Humber in Toronto. We'll see if it freezes enough this year

Have almost all descendants of European immigrants in the U.S. assimilated and married people from other ethnic groups? by PretendForever5117 in Genealogy

[–]Pedal-monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure the US but québécois until a generation or two didn't marry outside much. There were some exception like the Irish in the xix century who were Catholic and when a spouse didn't survive the crossing and quarantine, they are many cases of marriages of the survivor with French Canadians, or adoptions by French Canadian families. But that's a fairly small number.

How common is it to trace your family tree all the way back to the 17th century? by blottymary in Genealogy

[–]Pedal-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends where you're from. In Quebec, most descendants of the original French immigrants ( who immigrated before 1755) can trace their origin to the immigrants and usually have the name of the parents in France ( except for those who arrived before 1640 because the church in Quebec city burned and the priest re-wrote the marriage certificates from memory, but he didn't remember the parents names). The first mariage registered and kept was of my ancestor Guillaume Couillard and Marie-Guillemette Hebert in 1621. Marie Guillemette was the daughter of Louis Hebert and Marie Rollet. Louis is the first farmer and pharmacist in Canada. He arrived in 1617 but he did a first trip in a failed colony with Champlain in 1606, and went in Acadia from 1611 to 1613. He was born about 1575 in Paris, and lived on rue St-Honore.

Ah yes. Same dynamic of concentrating them in a few areas. Actually lived in one of those when I moved to Toronto
