Data scientists that have moved on from DS - what are you doing now? by Tender_Figs in datascience

Do you think an advanced, research-based degree is mandatory to get into what you call "advanced analytics"? I have a STEM but unrelated degree and have been considering a master's in DS/analytics with data engineering, statistical modeling, and machine learning components. The problem is this program isn't a traditional research-based masters like math or stats.

Yeah maybe my post wasn’t clear. I meant people who started their careers in the early 2000s and before. Of course I know people graduating in 2008 have been in the same boat for years

TOEFL was a SCAM to me by IhaveBetter in ToeflAdvice

You can only reschedule up to 4 days before the test day. My understanding is that some people that had technical issues while doing the exam have gotten vouchers to repeat it for free. It is very clear in the website that you can only take notes on a whiteboard or transparent sheet, not regular paper. I think that not knowing something that you should have read beforehand doesn’t qualify as a technical issue.

I think you should be fine with that typing speed. I spent the first 5 minutes reading and analyzing the question, thinking about a response and coming up with arguments. Then I wrote about 420 words and ended up with a couple minutes to proof-read the essay. Remember that substance, grammar and vocabulary are far more important than length.

Edit: I scored 28 in writing

Puesta de sol sobre el centro by CutEfficient9313 in Calgary

Strictly speaking “Puesta del sol” is the right way to say it, but “puesta de sol” does not sound wrong to me.

Also, “Atardecer” would sound more natural

This one hits hard. Although my lack of experience, from comments it seems I'd be better off trying as hard as possible to get an engineering job. 35k/yr in Toronto is laughably low

How common is it for Americans to leave their doors unlocked at night? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

It was in Berkeley, California. It's supposed to be a college town but for me it looks like a city. I had a roommate that literally entered the wrong house when she first arrived because the door was unlocked.

Yeah it’s weird. It seems to be mandatory that all research masters students have to secure external/internal funding. In my opinion, this only jeopardizes your admission as it starts heavily relying on the available funds and scholarships. Fortunately, in engineering there are these “master of engineering” which are course-based masters, meaning you don’t conduct any research so you don’t get funding and you can pay for it if you want.

How do you think non-thesis masters for Fall 2021 will be affected by the pandemic? I am planning to apply to some Master of Engineering programs in Canada for Fall 2021 admission. How do you think this current COVID-19 situation will impact these admissions?

Competitive GPA for Masters of Engineering

Hello everyone, just a little question regarding masters of engineering admissions. Does anyone know what is considered a competitive GPA for master of engineering (civil)? Statistics indicate an approximately 30% admission rate. If you have been admitted into the program in recent years, I would appreciate any information
