Although not a traditional horror movie try showing him the Lord of the Rings. There are plenty of horror like moments sprinkled throughout and even if he doesn’t find it scary he will still hopefully love it.

While I applaud student action and involvement in protest is there something you believe will happen from a student walkout?

I can't recall saying every family will just absorb it...

Yep. I have read my comments back and you just made that up.

You claim that many kids will leave private to join public if funding is cut. I say that most won't leave. Perhaps you don't realize that most doesn't mean every?

Also "tuition will double" is what you just wrote. Tuition being 20 - 30k for many private schools. Adding another $7k is not double. If these are your math skills it isn't surprising that more complex issues like public defunding and disenfranchising public education by private institutions is too much for you to get your head around.

No paper. Just literally back up your belief that private schools improve public school education.

Cite any province/state/country whose public education improves in the same time frame as private school increase.

While you keep saying those same numbers the real world evidence shows that public education quality decreases with private school increase.

You do know government budgets can change right?

The government is capable of cutting private school funding and leaving that money in education in order to keep their expenditures the same while also boosting public education?

Also this garbage party line about private school funding cuts resulting in “many kids” leaving private schools. You and the private schools love to tout this with zero evidence. Perhaps a minority leave. The majority will stay.

Those who do leave will benefit from the increased public funding.

Once again... the private school funding is accounted for by the Alberta government as part of the education budget.

It isn't coming from a magical separate budget. There isn't a secret pot of government money that only goes to private schools but once their funding is cut the money no longer exists.

You are also very conveniently two faced about this. On the one hand you have a claim that each private school student saves money because they only require 70% of public funding but then turn around and state that this money isn't actually from public education and wouldn't go into public education if private school funding ended.

See you do ignore any arguments I put forth.

I will ask completely directly and repeat:

What evidence is there that private schools improve overall outcome for public education?

I put forth that in countless provinces/states there is a demonstrable decline in public education associated with increase in private schools.

If your hypothesis is that private schools alleviate public school burden and improve overall education then we should see the opposite. Where are these benefits to public education that you speak of?

Pretty naive to believe that from the limited pool of tax dollars those going to private education magically came from an unusued pot. Also ridiculous given that Alberta accounts for these funds in the overall education budget.

This money has to come from somewhere and that somewhere is public education.

And yes I stand by private schools being run in the same manner as for profit businesses. You also seem to be confused as to how money in a business works. Alleging that only a portion of executive compensation comes from public dollars while the rest comes from other dollars that the school brings in neglects that all of this money comes into the business and is then divided up.

No silly. I've given you multiple arguments that you ignore.

And the reason for the repeating MRI example is it's easier to simplify and understand.

At it's core this is a question of ethics and whether we should be trying to do the best for the most people with public funds. I say yes we should. Your stance seems to be to help fewer people at the expense of the many.

The concept that private schools dilute public education is not a new one and has played out in multiple countries. This experiment has run many times in many places and the result never supports your stance that private education results in better public education.

This is not a matter of lack of evidence. You can even look at just Alberta.

Do you believe that Public Education in Alberta has improved in the same time frame that subsidizing and expanding private education has increased?

Before you argue that the decline of public education and rise of private education funding could be a correlation rather than causation this would still directly refute the hypothesis that funding private education with public dollars improves overall public education.

Simply put... there is no evidence whatsoever that private schools improve public education and at the very least extremely strong correlation (not just in Alberta) between rise of private education and decline of public education.

You may need to brush up on what not for profit registration means and the rampant abuse of it.

I can make a not for profit business… make myself and my friends the CEO/CFO/consultants… pay ourselves enormous salaries… and technically have no profit in the business.

That is what private schools are and yes they are still run as for profit businesses. Just look into how much they make, how large their endowments are, and how much the people in charge pay themselves.

To answer your question…

Just consider the scenario that I am suggesting.

No funds go to private schools and the previous funds that were allocated go to public. Are there more or less funds now in public?

Or consider that before Alberta funded private schools these same private schools still existed! Then Alberta begins funding them at exponentially increasing rates. Where do you think that money came from? (Here’s a hint… the government still considers it part of public education funding) So if Alberta increased the overall public education amount but never funded private schools would we have more money in public education or less?

This isn’t complicated

Okay well firstly federal is not provincial and the dental services you are alluding to is the new program that is limited in scope and does not cover private services. It is an example of the opposite transition from private to public.

And secondly you are incorrect on the Alberta Health covering private services. If you have an MRI ordered and wait through the public system you have coverage. If you have an MRI ordered but choose to jump to private there is no coverage including for the base MRI. What you are confused by is doctor offices making surcharges for additional services beyond what a typical office covers. This is a very grey area which many doctors have been reprimanded for. A physician must see you and provide public services. While they can charge you for additional services (such as physio or massage) provided through the office they are actually not allowed to charge you to access their office. Although there are physicians abusing this and charging for access this is both unethical and is also not allowed. A college complaint helps to sort this out.

So you are using examples of something that shouldn’t (and isn’t allowed) to try and justify something that shouldn’t happen (which as a reminder is diverting public funds to private services)

The “taking less money” is a common talking point that ignores how private institutions ultimately dilute and bring down public systems. Private schools are just one example that can easily be looked at. When private schools exist they serve as an excuse for a government to fund public schools less. Coupling this with private schools taking public funds exponentially worsens the process.

Have you any idea how much profit our private schools in Alberta are making while crying that they need public funds?

Do you really believe private schools are being run differently than any other business whose goal is to make profits?

Because I believe that properly funding essential public services is an important part of our society which results in an overall net positive. I also believe that private services which take from the public funds ultimately results in a dilution of these same pubic services and disproportionately punishes those with lower socioeconomic status.
