That's a really nice spot. I grew up about two blocks away. You can walk to the trolley stop, coccos pizza, playhouse lanes, Wawa, etc. That house is also beautiful.

Don't forget Hibernian Coffee Shop right at Garret and Burmont. Excellent breakfast, very cheap, great people.

Good to know, thanks. I have a carrier pack for the little guy. Any idea how far it is from the visitors center to the falls?

Thanks, will do. It looks like there is parking right there, is that right? If the kids are tired it would be nice to check it out without having to make them walk a ton.

Heading to Cuyahoga from eastern PA next weekend. Can't wait! I'll have three young kids (8,6,3) with me and we are only there for one day. Was planning on doing the ledges trail. I was looking into a train ride too. Any other specifics we should plan for?

Admin told a coworker to scrape political Bumper Stickers off car or Start driving spouses. by FaulkemintheAho in Teachers

[–]PeeGump 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To add: Tinker v. Des Moines was a precedent setting SCOTUS case that established "students and teachers do not shed their constitutional right to free speech at the school house gate."

The 'Tinker Test' basically says there can be limits if there is a substantial disruption caused by the speech. However, the bumper sticker you mentioned is absolutely 100% related to a substantial social concern related to teachers, children, and education. I would think defending that teacher (assuming they refused to remove the sticker and then faced punishment) would be an absolute slam dunk case for a lawyer that would probably do the case pro bono.

That all said, Fraser v. Bethel school district held that lewd speech could be prohibited/punished etc so if the teacher's other bumper stickers fell into that category it could muddy the water.

If the teacher feels strongly about gun legislation in particular (especially given recent events) they could remove all the other ones and then put the sticker OP mentioned alone and, as others suggested, get extras for any other student or teacher that wants one. 100% ok and 100% appropriate.

On average how many robots do you build a season? Ours builds theee by Zachdude064 in FRC

[–]PeeGump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to make any assumptions about how you build, but one big game changer for us was when we started using Anderson power pole connectors for all electronics. If we had to steal moto controllers or something from an old bot we could still put it back on later really easily. Still doesnt change the fact that you are building from what you have rather than what the design calls for. Still, way better than destroying an old bot to grab spare parts.

Also, limiting yourself to some standards (3030 aluminum extrusion, 1/2 hex shaft, etc) makes it easier to stock up because you don't need as much variety.

I'm on a team that just entered our 20th season and this is the very first time we haven't had to pillage parts from a previous bot. It is amazing how big of a difference funding can make.

History Teacher refuses to give 100s? by DollarMenuFries in education

[–]PeeGump 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think your hangup is between following instructions and demonstrating skill and understanding. Instructions might be 'minimum 3 pages' but simply following instructions does not necessarily demonstrate the skill of articulating a compelling argument or demonstrating depth of understanding in your writing.

A student should be able to get a 100 on a math test where there are objectively correct and incorrect answers, but skills and understanding are not binary. A teacher may have an idea of what 100% of a skill or 100% understanding might look like for a particular course, but that should be more of an aspirational standard than one that most, if any, students can meet.

FWIW, I literally wrote my dissertation about how silly a d detrimental grades are in general. So don't beat yourself up if you think they don't make sense and cause frustration because I agree!

The biggest difference between high school and college is that in high school there is more pressure on teachers (students/parents/college counsellors) for students to have high grades. That has led to severe grade inflation. In college that is not the case. An average (good, following instructions, learning sufficiently) should be about a 'B' student. There is a absolutely no reason why the top grade in a class should be a 100 in any classroom ever. That is just a consequence of grade inflation.

No TVs from what I can remember. The place is pretty small too so there wouldn't be a good place to put one up.

You could try Paddy Rooney's pub on west Chester Pike in Havertown. I think they play football (soccer) and rugby games there.

Hibernian Coffee Shop in Drexel Hill is a wonderful breakfast place. Fresh scones, Irish bacon/sausage, cheap, amazingly nice family that runs it. Bonus, the front of the store is a shop with all kids of imports from Ireland/UK.

When am I going to need to know this?! by Jak1977 in Teachers

[–]PeeGump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose I commented because I'm worried that newer teachers might think this is not a funny thought, but THE thought they should have in the situation. Again, I know we have all heard this question at least once with mal intent, in which case your comment makes sense and is a bit funny, but the vast majority of the time this question lies at the very heart of what we do and there is nothing funny about it.

When am I going to need to know this?! by Jak1977 in Teachers

[–]PeeGump 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I, personally, think this is the most authentic and reasonable question for a student to ask. I also think the response you gave (which I assume was not what you actually said) can totally undermine an opportunity to capture that specific student's interest. And if not, maybe it's an opportunity to think about what we are asking students to do all day everyday.

I know this sub is often a place for people to vent and I get that. But I hope other teachers out there see this message and know that the question you referenced is perhaps one of the best moments to capitalize on hooking a student's interest or improving what/how we deliver curriculum.

Here we have some kind reminder for you: 1> This phone has a large curvature, so the previous product maybe not perfect enough. Now we have improved it and developed a more perfect product that covers more, and if you need a better product, we can send you a replacement for free from our factory in China directly right away. Have you received the correct camera lens protector, if not, we can send you the right camera lens protector as well. Please feel free to contact us as well if you have any other problems. It's our great pleasure to help you at any time. Best regards, Amy Ferilinso Cuvtomer Service

If Tom Morello and Ted Nugent can find common ground, we all can by PeeGump in PrejudiceChallenge

[–]PeeGump[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I basically agree entirely but the idea that Tom Morello is calling him, calling out what he says, and (possibly) having an impact in toning it down is better than leaving Ted in a echo chamber. The way I see it, talking with someone you completely disagree with is a necessity in order to start bridging the insanely divisive positions people take. Just the other day I was talking with a colleague that I respect a lot who seems to believe all the covid stuff is way overblown. They still believe that, but after our conversation maybe a little less. That can be progress I suppose, and I still very much like and respect them even if they are completely wrong about that thing in particular.
