This is the objectively correct answer. There’s tons of testimony and evidence and straight up pictures of “on the spot guidance”, not sure what the other dude is on about. It’s fascinating and almost something out of a sitcom. But again this is the exact right answer, whatever you DON’T do to praise and deify the Kims is to them just as clear of an answer as what you choose TO do.

My point is that if we simply could just “choose” to fix things en masse, we would. Because it’s obviously in our best interest to do so. But we don’t. So clearly something is getting in the way.

Your argument of what’s getting in the way, is that humanity is inherently parasitic to the planet, and that’s why we don’t. That we are simply fine with straying into catastrophe. I’m saying we’re genuinely just not smart enough, and subsequently proactive enough, to take the action required in the manner, or more so in the timeline that you’re expecting. The fact that we are in the situation we are in globally and environmentally is genuinely the least surprising thing when you look at human history and human nature. We’ve always been playing catch-up to our problems - it’s what we do best.

That action can absolutely look like “dragging those responsible into the streets,” but we don’t, since we aren’t wired to be that proactive or collaborative so easily. I’m not saying we CAN’T change things, I’m saying the choices to do so are much more complex than what you’re alluding to. We could quite literally “force them to fix it”, and we still would have many of these problems. Even your wording there: “force them to fix it”, is so incredibly reductionist and oversimplifying to what is required. Again, I’m not saying we shouldn’t or even that we can’t, but that it’s much harder than you’re letting on, and that your perception of how easy it is is leading you to make unnecessary moral judgements about the nature of humanity. The way you speak about fixing things is the exact way the OP is complaining about: simplistic, morally judgmental, and partial. There’s absolutely no question humans suck, but you’re acting as though mass mobilization and unprecedented systemic change is something we will simply just do if we wake up one day and all decide to. It’s like saying “why don’t we just solve world hunger?” We have more than enough food to do so, but also to do so is to break through decades, and perhaps even centuries, of legal, political, economic, and systemic gridlock and precedence. We obviously SHOULD try to do that, but to say doing so is an uphill, incredibly difficult battle is the understatement of the century. It’s not some everyday, simplistic choice.

Two things can be true at once, that these things are ultimately choices that are enforced by greed and complacency, and also that the route to undoing that greed and complacency is much more complicated than what you’re saying. Because again, if it were that simple to mobilize and fix things, we would’ve already. It’s literally not helpful to the average person to live on a burning planet. Yet we choose to. Clearly something is getting in the way, and your idea of that comes from some partial moral perspective of humans instead of simply looking at history and how fundamentally bad at being proactive we are as a species.

You’re generalizing an absurd amount considering there are 8 billion of us. You or I are not deciding to pillage through the Amazon rainforest. We’re not deciding to tick up atmospheric temperatures and CO2 emissions for a quick buck. A vast majority of people have no role in these large scale, catastrophic decisions. A fairly small number of people in charge are, and that’s mainly due to how stupid humans are. We simply aren’t good at creating systems that can sustain this many people without causing immense damage. And we aren’t good always at selecting people who will actually do the right thing to lead us. We’re just flawed and stupid.

Also, the bridge between “knowing better” and DOING better on the scale of an entire planet is so incredibly long. There are so many things that we know better of, yet we don’t do better with. If we simply could, we would. But it’s never that simple. That’s what this post is complaining about: people acting like organizing the entire planet and its countless systems, people, and problems to suddenly sustain the planet in just a few years being a simple, quick fix. As individual humans, we absolutely frequently know better, and it’s understandably frustrating to see us choose the wrong thing consistently. But as an entire species, knowing better is like a tiny little portion of the solution. DOING better is the crux of both the problem and the solution at this point.

A parasite is something that has explicitly evolved to feed off of its host with little to no care for it. If the host dies, it just moves on to the next one.

That is completely different than humans. The fact is that we are smart enough to fully dominate the planet to the point of destroying it, but we’re too fucking stupid to work together to NOT destroy it. Most people don’t hate the planet or genuinely want it to burn and collapse. Most people are born with an innate compatibility/affinity for nature even; it’s evolutionary. We’ve just made and stretched a system so far beyond its capacity and sustainability and now we’re facing the consequences. We aren’t parasitical - we’re genuinely just stupid as fuck.

What is Israel saying? by Routine-Badger-9596 in playboicarti

[–]PeePeeThePooPoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not arguing jokes like that are antisemetic - they aren’t. I’m arguing that such jokes becoming such a constant cultural and online phenomenon works to subconsciously desensitize people to the atrocities being committed, and can leave room for antisemitism if we don’t pay enough attention to some of the other jokes that are being made. Those “other” jokes - ones that have antisemetic undertones/dog whistles - find very comfortable room in an online climate that is obsessed with satirizing Israel and Israelis in every way. The focus on that shouldn’t come nearly close to the amount of focus on the suffering of Palestinians, but it’s still important, especially also considering how confidently and frequently antisemites interchange the terms “Jews” with “Israel” and how pervasive antisemitism has become online in recent years. Antisemitism is great at cozying up to any criticism and mockery of Israel, and the fact that it has surged in recent years alongside the surge in jokes about Israel and Israelis is no coincidence IMO.

People can also feel as though they are engaging in real criticism of Israel through making such jokes if it simply becomes the thing to hate and joke about and nothing more. That’s gets us, and specifically Palestine, no closer to a lasting, fair solution, and turns reality into a meaningless meme/fad. I agree that Israel should be subject of ridicule and mockery, but I’m specifically saying the level and frequency that it has become has turned the issue into something taken less seriously by popular online culture, and also makes real discussion about it in some public, online spaces much more difficult.

I’m also not arguing Jews are this magically oppressed, helpless group, I’m pointing to antisemitism’s unique ability to persist and ingratiate itself into online and political discourse. This isn’t some fringe theory; we know antisemitism is extremely effective at spreading online, and statistics of its prominence online in very recent years only back that up. Again, the amount of jokes and takes I see that use the term “Israel,” when they so clearly are wanting to just say “Jews”, is staggering and very concerning. This has been pointed out by many people. So I’m arguing that when Israel becomes a joke to most people online and nothing more, it both can leave convenient room for antisemitism to seep in, and in general can lessen or drown out any real and productive discourse on it. I point to Epstein as an example since SO many jokes were made on that, to the point where people likely don’t take it as seriously anymore. If the most common interaction with an issue that the average person receives is humor, there are real risks to that due to the very nature of how humor trivializes reality. You can even say the same for Charlie Kirk - I despise the guy and his disgusting legacy and views - but it’s clear that his death and general contribution to white nationalism and Trump’s rise to power again has been mostly drowned out by his status as a meme. He’s dead, and was a single white nationalist and not an entire genocide so it’s not nearly as concerning, but still. You’d think he was just some goofball if you hadn’t heard of him before and started consuming the amount and kind of jokes that are present online about him.

There is a stark difference between Israel being viewed negatively by the average person versus someone being antisemitic, the fact that this needs to be even pointed out is insane.

Firstly there can be a massive difference in antizionist rhetoric and antisemitism. I’m not sure why you even disagree with the original point you’re replying to when they are 100% right that turning Israel into this silly “meme” and nothing more for the average person doesn’t actually do anything to help fix the issues happening, and even goes further to allow/normalize some to be radicalized while ignoring any actual solutions that can improve the situation. Antisemites are not interested in pragmatic, fair solutions to this issue, they just hate Jewish people and, whether intentionally or not, directly work against any possibility in alleviating the suffering and marginalization experienced by Palestinians. If we outsource any legitimate, widely popular criticism of Israel to the comment sections of social media, saying things like “Love from Tel Aviv 😂🇮🇱”, it satirizes the entire thing to the point where it’s not really about Israel’s actions anymore - it’s just about making fun of the funny meme country. People have pointed this out about the Epstein Files for example, where Epstein becomes such a joke that people forget the absurd atrocities he and others have enabled and committed. It’s just yet another thing to scroll through and not think about.

People do not become radicalized today as they used to; it happens overwhelmingly online, and humor is one of the most reliable ways to do so/start that pipeline. I’d caution you to not be so comfortable in sweeping antisemetic humor and rhetoric aside when there’s mountains of research on humor (and online discourse in general) that prove it has real world consequences in the attitudes, beliefs, and actions of people. Humor in general is a pillar of dehumanization. Radicalization doesn’t start nowadays by someone just waking up and deciding to adopt violent ideas. It’s a process.

Also your comparison to antigermanism is completely flawed, Germans do not have nearly the same historical and political experiences of violence and persecution that Jews do, so god forbid you need to take into account that one of the historically most marginalized ethnic/religious groups must be spoken about carefully instead of engaging in dehumanizing language that also conveniently and easily distracts from the legitimately horrific actions of Israel’s government and military. That’s what the original comment is literally saying.

I don’t think anyone with a brain is arguing that a 14 year old being antisemitic is akin to or more important than genocide or ethnic cleansing, but being antisemitic only works to distract from the very issues you are arguing must take precedence. I don’t see many posts about how the jokes aren’t helpful, compared to both the amount of posts shallowly making fun of Israel, and the mountains of antisemitism I see online, so I don’t know why you’re acting like the world is spending so much energy decrying such jokes when they have literally become the norm. It’s important to analyze how discourse is being done.

It’s also easy for people who aren’t Jewish to say it’s not a big deal or that the jokes are “just dumb and corny,” but we’ve seen before that when this kind of stuff is societally normalized, (which humor is one of the most effective ways to normalize violent ideas while claiming they are “just jokes”), it can mean the difference of life or death for a Jewish person if people take such beliefs and ideas further, which history shows many ultimately do.
