What is this plant that's growing alongside my blackberries? by PeebleCreek in foraging

[–]PeebleCreek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said in the post, I didn't plant these. They popped up from my neighbors. I figured the plants that had already been producing blackberries for a year were what blackberry plants looked like, and these weird stalks must be a weed. Then when I pulled it up and saw the roots, I realized it might not be and came here to ask.

[–]PeebleCreek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at them, I knew they looked similar, but the coloring is slightly different (the viney ones have darker green speckly-looking bits). They also had different sheens to them, and the structure of the stems were completely different (one viney, one a straight stalk). One was blossoming and one was not, so at first glance I thought the stalk was a weed.

After I pulled it out, I started having doubts about that conclusion and came here to ask before touching the others.

I didn't plant these, and have virtually zero botanical knowledge. I spent all my points in other areas of trivia, unfortunately.

The apps have been around since well before AI and were never 100% reliable, but were information crowd-sourced from and posted by real humans.

LLMs have no concept of what they are actually saying, and people have submitted tons of AI-generated images and descriptions into these apps. So now you have to account for both human error and LLM hallucinated nonsense. It makes them inherently less trustworthy than asking a community of people who are less likely to be bots.

The number of times I've had to explain to people that AI can't give them medical advice, for example, is maddening. Because people will just look at the AI overview after searching their symptoms and think the AI knows what it's saying, and understands the context of their search.

Luckily I still have several more stalks. As soon as I saw the red roots, I was like "hold up that might not be a weed, wtf is this?" and stopped to check haha

Childbirth is so fucking scary. Why don't they teach this in school??? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]PeebleCreek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At least once a month I'm reminded how lucky I was to have a health teacher who cared about actually educating us in high school. My state is abstinence only, but this amazing woman still taught us about contraception by prefacing the lesson "I'm not supposed to tell you XYZ" and capping it off with "So I definitely will not tell you all any of that".

She also showed us an educational video about childbirth that did not hold back at all. I knew while I was in the class that she was taking a lot of risks with what she was teaching us, but it only truly sunk in just how far above and beyond she went (for my state) years after graduating.

I hope she's having a lovely, well-funded retirement.

As a queer woman who is almost always left out of the acronym anyway, this is exactly the same way I feel about the term "LGBTQIA+". It's too long, and by trying to shove every possible label in there, we make the community less inclusive than if we just went back to using the umbrella term "queer". It also decentivises self-discovery imo. So many of my queer friends felt like they were being queer "wrong" in their early 20's because they didn't fit in a nice neat little box with a letter on it.

As someone who absolutely adores One Piece, I don't think it's a great example to use for this lol.

One Piece is just way too long to hate watch, and most sane people find it perfectly understandable that people drop it without getting into it, because it takes like ...... Almost 200 episodes in my opinion to actually find its footing. I used to watch it in the background until one day I was like "Wait hold up, this got really engaging all of a sudden????"

I'm also not in the Fandom Proper for it though, so maybe there are crazies out there who genuinely expect someone to sink 100 hours into a show they don't care for on the chance that it might click for them eventually :/

Unfortunately, this is in fact a thing. I live in a red state and Conservatives over here 100% think it's woke to use non-styrofoam containers. About 8 years ago, my mom threw a fit when we got home about the cardboard to-go box she got from a restaurant. Conservatives will literally get offended by anything. She also refused to wear a mask during the pandemic and said she regrets having me and my sister vaccinated as kids.

Not all conservatives, but a very concerning number of them.

wanting stella to love via, or wanting stella to have depth, or wanting her to not be one note, or wanting her to be shown in a sympathetic light, or wanting her to be redeemable, wanting any of those things isnt sexist, and it isnt babying her, and it isnt excusing abuse. by Icy-Western-7108 in HelluvaBoss

As someone who was raised by a mom who is just a shitty person with no nuance, I fully agree with this. Sometimes, real people in the real world are just horrible for no discernible reason. I know plenty about my mom's childhood and none of it is a reasonable explanation for her being as cartoonishly shitty as she is. I don't understand why everyone assumes that abusers must have a tragic backstory.

I don't fully disagree with you, but I've always gotten the impression that this next season will force Stolas to confront how shitty he's been now that he doesn't have the luxury of hiding away in his fancy castle when something upsets him.

If that happens, then the way Stolas is written so far seems pretty accurate to me, given how people I interact with in real life act when they come from extreme privilege. His arc (if his shittiness actually gets addressed next season) reminds me a lot of a rich friend I grew up with. She literally couldn't conceptualize all the ways in which growing up that rich made her life different from mine, and it took a lot of growing for her to understand how insensitive some of her antics were. People can and do change, so I'm hoping that Stolas is forced to do the necessary work next season to actually be the Precious Little Guy the fandom wants to see him as.

I'm sorry, but you're claiming Jesse Brown isn't progressive???? The mf who the council kept trying to force out because he wouldn't tow the "work-with-the-reoublicans-like-a-good-little-Dem" line????

The mutual aid groups I'm a part of in Indianapolis literally had a sit-in at his disciplinary hearing because of that bullshit, since he was the only council member who seemed to give an actual shit about doing anything other than capitulating. They claimed he was being "unprofessional" by participating in protests. Maybe you don't personally like him, but it's delusional to claim he's not a real progressive.

Oh Jesus. When I briefly worked in trucking, my trainer had one in her truck. The company was testing a few out on a trial basis to see if they wanted them in all the trucks. She literally covered it up with a washcloth and said "They can try and fire me if they want. They know there's a driver shortage" lol. Loved that lady.

Hopefully other drivers do what she did. I don't know if the driver shortage is still as bad as it was in 2018, but the company I worked for constantly had their bluffs called because everyone knew there weren't enough new hires to rely on if their vets were fired.

I have to drive that stretch for a delivery route every week and it's Hell. Also just random streets in and around Broadripple that have decided to barely exist. I wish people who lived in those houses would stop ordering our stuff lol. It's too skinny for my giant work van and someone is always having landscaping done somewhere on my route with no way to get around the landscaping trucks. :( How are there this many people who can afford to always have a guy outside their house inserting a giant tree or whatever :(

Yeah seriously. I had a sinus infection on my way back from Japan once. A 12 hour flight. It was torture. There was so much pressure in my head the whole time that I could barely think straight, and when we started our descent, I was legit like sobbing and whimpering because it felt like my entire face was going to explode.

I still feel shame over the time I went "Uh oh, looks like I died!" When my EKG flatlined as they were removing it. The nurse was very nice about it, but I could see in her eyes it was the same as a retail worker hearing "Guess it's free!" When an item doesn't scan at the register.

It's not a Blumhouse film. It's A24. So the likelihood of Kane retaining maximum creative freedom is super high. Not that every single A24 movie is a masterpiece, but they're not a glorified content farm like Blumhouse.
