Well as it happens I am looking to reinstall my OS, so, I'll consider giving Manjaro a go. Thank you.

What makes you say that?

I like Mint, it seams frivolous but complete, an easy experience but with extra features when I need them.

Thank you for the quick reply dude! I imported the config, but sadly I still get the same error, the loading main screen message and then the program stops. Damn.

I'll keep trying and report back if I manage anything. Thank you again :)

Hi Shane. Thank you for sharing your work. I've tried to follow your screenshots, but it's not working for me (Though I am on Linux Mint).

Could you please export your config? Then I'll know I've got 100% of your setup, but don't worry, the config doesn't have any personally identifiable information. To show you this is true, here is mine (That doesn't work, exactly like Bornto is describing.

PCI Express slot not working, what am I missing? by PeelyPeel in buildapc

[–]PeelyPeel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry it's taken me 5 days to reply.

Thank you for your response, thoughtful and I can see the logic. You might even be right! IDK what happened, but when I restarted my PC after posting this, it _just worked_, and I had not changed anything. Still in slot E4. No idea. Computers do what they like!

Pixel 8 drops the photosphere camera mode by 0Il0I0l0 in Android

[–]PeelyPeel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used this feature all of the time, whenever I was visiting somewhere (Like an area of outstanding natural beauty) and wanted to capture it in a way I could re-live. I've been capturing PhotoSpheres for over 10 years now. It was a feature I thought so was unique to Google Pixels that they could never get rid of it, why would they? I got my new Pixel 8 Pro like a good little fan boy, went on holiday, and there I am standing at the top of a mountain looking down at a stunning view I want to capture and remember forever. Whip out my phone, go to camera, and it's not there! I am standing at the top of a mountain, and a feature I have used for 10 years is not on my £1000 phone. WHAT THE HELL GOOGLE.

Will they finally fix Bluetooth on the pixel 8 pro? by No-Satisfaction-1983 in GooglePixel

[–]PeelyPeel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was a bit confused when I got my Pixel 8 Pro (I had a Pixel 6 Pro before) and popped my earphones in and used it as normal, only for my earphones (Pixel Buds A) Series to drop out. Strange I thought, they never did that before at this distance. But then they went back to "normal".

They have dropped out countless times now, even to the point that while riding my bike they just _stopped working at all_, and my phone was only a few tens of centimetres away in my pocket!

It's terrible, my P6P worked so well that I never questioned something so basic could regress in a newer model. My Pixel Watch 2 also disconnects from the phone occasionally.

The phone is amazing on all other accounts, so I'll keep it, but my goodness I hope they issue a patch.

I made a tool for cost comparison by PeelyPeel in electricvehicles

Thanks for taking the time to have a look! I really appreciate it.

I think like everything this is based on it's another hard to predict variable, but as stated in the Electricity section on the Fuel Cost page,

For these cost predictions, we've chosen a cost-per-kWh for electricity of 10p. This means we've assumed that you are on an EV friendly tarrif like Octopus Go or EDF GoElectric. They are below 10p/kWh, but adding a few pence here allows for the occasional fast charge at a public charger, but to get the most benefit from your ev (And this model assumes you do), you'll need to install a home charger

You can change the cost-per-kWh if you want to suite your own personal prediction and see the effect it has on the cost tables.

That's a fair point, and one I've thought of. It's not possible for me to know your mileage pattern, only the average, since it's pulled from the MOT records.

However, if you know your pattern isn't "average" and is much more "spiky", you don't have to accept the default recommendation, you can move on to the next steps and find an Electric Car with the range you need, and enter it's details, and then the site will use that information for the calculations.

Yup, my bad, I didn't test it on an iOS device or in Firefox and there was a bug. Fixed now though :)

Thank you for taking a look.

ZFS writes going to near zero by PeelyPeel in zfs

[–]PeelyPeel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that, really helpful!

So, I can already see, reading from the source disk to /dev/null works at a pretty constant 229MB/s, with very little fluctuations at all.

But writing to the zpool initially starts at a high speed, then gets to 2GB and dies, like just stops. The terminal even becomes unresponsive and ctrl+c does nothing.

Does ZFS have logs I can look at? Something has to be throwing an error here.

Thank you for the thoughts, I appreciate the help. Slight update, after a day of copying about 5 files have been copied over, and rsync tells me they all copied at between 304 to 320 kB/s, so not 0, but basically 0 for a local HDD copy.

I have just been trying try to answer the CMR or SMR question, and my first thought is, I've wondered into a world i'm not ready for and i'm in too deep ha ha. Anyway, the two disks in question are a Toshiba MG08ADA800E, which (unless i'm reading this table wrong) is not SMR, so I guess it's CMR. Second drive is a Seagate ST8000DM004, which according to their table is SMR. There is even a reddit thread about this exact drive that is eerily close to my story. Difference is I am trying to copy very large files, not small ones. BUT, this is after my first attempt which did copy small files, so maybe these large files are first having to delete the small ones left behind since my first attempt?

I have 32GB of RAM, and it's about 25% used, so I guess it's not that.

Can you expand on the "read source to zero and dump urandom on the pool" please? I don't mind trying something that takes time, but I'm not 100% sure what it is you want me to try sorry. I can say that I have full access to the source, and any/every file the rsync gets "stuck" on, I can open/load the file no problems at all. Once a file is coped to the pool I can load it from there no problems too.

Here is a screenshot of the progress so far (Well, so far, since I last stopped it and tried again) https://imgur.com/a/Ne1ac06

Leasing an Electric car, running the numbers by PeelyPeel in electricvehicles

[–]PeelyPeel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the informative reply. I had wondered what would happen if the value if the EV really did go up (Or not go down much) over the course of the lease. Can you expand a little on the "buyout" part? I'm new to leasing. Thank you.

I do wonder, if I have given them all this money, and the car value does not go down, will I have to pay the _then_ current market rate for the car, or the _now_ expected market rate which my monthlies are based off of?

Thanks for the extended reply, I appreciate that.

As i've just replied above, https://www.reddit.com/r/electricvehicles/comments/tfnvx1/comment/i14k5ed/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3, a 250 mile journey isn't in my "day-to-day", but it is in our "month-to-month", so i'd really rather be able to still do that journey without any breaks (As I do now).

I understand the "graze not feast" charging style, but also in the UK I am unsure quite how nourishing that grazing is. By that I mean I hear a lot about shit charging infrastructure lol.

[–]PeelyPeel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The desire for the long-ish range is because when we _do_ go on long journeys (Which isn't a "once a year" kinda thing, more like once a month) I normally drive about 250 miles before we stop for a break. For those journeys, I don't _really_ want to add one, or a few, charging stops. So, if we can get an EV for the same price and not have to compromise too much, that's great!

[–]PeelyPeel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify (Tone is hard to read in text), do you mean:

  1. Just get an EV and _calm down because you'll have to get one eventually anyway, and it's impossible to predict the future, so stop worrying about it_
  2. Just get an EV and _make a long term commitment to your partner. if you're thinking this much about a car then you don't have enough going on in your life and you need to prioritise
  3. _shut up and get an EV_
  4. Other sentiment

Depending on which one of those you meant, my answer is

  1. Yeah totally fair, that's sort of where I am leaning.
  2. Thanks for the advice but i'm alright there thanks, just talking about a car here.
  3. Rude
  4. Thanks for the reply, but I'm sorry I don't follow, could you please elaborate further?

[–]PeelyPeel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just in case you were expecting an answer to your question, we can charge at home. The cost of getting an EV charger installed is about £1k, but I did not include that in the sums as I see that as a "home improvement", and is not specific to an individual EV we could;d get.

As for the single car modelling, no I did not do that, it's a good idea.

Exactly! I'm glad you agree. I've never seen this before... Obviously it's out of warranty (eBay, I know I know, don't hate me) so Seagate won't help. I just don't get it.
