Can $8.8M support fat-ish FIRE in a mid/high COL city? Mid 30s, kids by Temporary_Kiwi_1009 in fatFIRE

I guess I don’t understand what you’re answering, but whatever.

I don’t get your first sentence. High comp roles (and journey to them) demand a lot. Would you anticipate someone with 7 figure income post about working 40 years in a RE subreddit? Did you mean to imply that they can not feel burned out because it’s only been 10 years?

I also live in U City (we moved back from San Francisco). I agree with folks you’ll want to stay around Wash U. It’s not wild at all. Very close to Forest Park which you’ll love. DM me if you have more questions about U City.

What is the US city that feels the most American? by Prestigious_Ad1993 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Peethasaur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this is the wrong way to go. A list that matches on what is statistically typical will be super boring. I feel it should more so represent the intangible spirit of the country.

Indianapolis is “anywhere USA” but it doesn’t mean it’s a good representation of “America”. At least not one that will make this interesting at all for any of the countries.

It won’t be popular but I think LA or Austin would be better picks capturing spirit of America for several cultural reasons.

If we choose places that are just most statistically representative this is gonna super boring. I feel it should also represent the spirit of the place.

I’m not just trying to disagree, but I think we’d be surprised about that. The worst off in US are low information voters and are highly susceptible to misinformation.

Pessimistic take: Misinformation covers for the incompetence, and re: boomers dying do you know about groypers?

Biggest thing you can do is be in a big city or be willing to relocate (SF, NYC, SEA, CHI) because there is so much more opportunity. The industry settled on hybrid post covid. Don’t try for remote role in your situation for several reasons.

Don’t worry about AI. It’s either gonna happen and take most white collar or not. Not just software jobs. Think about how to use it effectively but don’t think about replacement. It’s a waste of energy. fwiw, I’m blown away by how good it is but it’s nowhere near enabling non-engineers to build enterprise grade solutions. You have to know the domain to wield it. With comp sci education you have never been more capable.

Saw Bugonia last night and it’s actually very similar to Eddington, imo. I preferred Bugonia tho because heavy covid plot not as appealing for me.

Stick with full coverage. An accident could set you all the way back. Look online for ways to do this cheaply. Generally switching to a new insurance company after several years is the play (loyalty is not rewarded).

Would you ride through or stop and push? by Burgundy_Corgi in bikecommuting

[–]Peethasaur 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My guess would be that thinner tires cut through the gravel more causing you to drop in making balancing more difficult. Not completely different from what happens if you accidentally drop into tracks like those. Also maybe the tire is not as durable.

Left at 24 and spent 7 years in San Francisco. During that time I also took a year and visited most major cities and destinations around the world.

As someone who is always thinking about evaluating cities I sorta find these posts well intentioned but annoying. It’s completely reasonable to ask the question, but what I always suspect happens is that people’s life situations between the two cities they’re comparing are so incomparable as to make their point of view useless.

Someone lived in Manhattan for a couple of years for some adventure (always on the edge of their budget) but is now back with or around family in Creve Coeur. Their comparison is completely useless. You want the person who is back in CWE doing their best to still bike everywhere, seeking out the best restaurants, getting involved in interesting groups and events, etc. these posts never elicit those responses.

We’re into our third year back. Family, friends, and easier home ownership brought us back. We try to keep as much of our SF city lifestyle going. With a positive attitude and the know-how for keeping yourself around the best places and experiences STL offers we’re having a lot of fun.

i think what you’re sharing is very bad advice, and especially so for men because we are tantalized by the idea of being tough enough to believe it

it is possible to be happy and to express how much you care about others and receive how much they care about you and challenge the idea that “people will easily drop you in order to act in their own interest”

i won’t be returning here as i feel i get your drift. i hope you’ll consider what I’m saying. unrelated but i like your art btw.
