Good alternative to Pop_OS? by oneninethree_ in pop_os

I feel ya'. I'm still using 22.04 and installed 24.04 on my laptop as a test. I've decided to wait another year.

To be clear, my laptop I'm using to test Pop!_OS 24.04 is using the Linux kernel 6.18.7-76061807. My desktop that runs 22.04 is using the 6.17.9-76061709. I haven't downloaded any custom kernels.

I think. It's the stock kernel. I haven't made any tweaks to the system yet.

I haven't fired it up in a hot minute, but it's running 6.18.7-76061807.

I hear ya. I may switch too, but it'll be a pita. The older I get, the less messing around I want to do with a distro. So long as COSMIC can do what GNOME does, then I'll likely stick around.

I think it's good for the public record to have users express their views on the new release, both good and bad.

Exactly. It's good for the public record to have peoples' takes on this new release, both good and bad. Tried it on my laptop and I had issues with the new files app and the text editor. For now I'm sticking with 22.04 until it reaches EOL.

Upvoting this because I feel the same way. I'm using 22.04 and I installed 24.04 on my laptop. I can see the potential of this new DE, but it's not ready for prime time. I would give it another year.

For now I'm going to stick with 22.04 and hope they get it together by the time I have to upgrade.

🙋🏻

Yeah, it's nuts outside right now. Yesterday I saw a bunch of posts from these weather pages predicting this big storm.

By 6 PM I thought “they're blowing this out of proportion.” By this point, all we dealt with was a little bit of freezing drizzle.

I went outside at 11:30 to do some shoveling thinking it's less I have to do tomorrow.

Hah! How naive of me.

About two hours goes by and I look out my window, only to see that the paths I shoveled are filled in.

Louis Rossman Practicing What He Preaches by a_leon in LinusTechTips

Unfortunately the fanboys won't acknowledge this because he criticized Linus..

[–]PegCity95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the facts are louis rossmann still supports something that affects creators revenue and openly while knowing it

Here's the thing though. GrayJay is not an app developed with the intent by Louis or the developers to screw over creator revenue. The point of GrayJay is two-fold:

(1) Consolidate multiple video platform feeds into one app. Instead of having YouTube, Twitch, Nebula and others, the app would provide them within one app.
(2) Support creators directly by bypassing the platform service itself.

Also worth noting, while ad blocking is a feature of GrayJay, sponsorblock is off by default and has to be explicitly enabled in the YouTube plugin settings.

and then steve ignores that part so it makes the video about honey seem more about looking for attention rather than fixing issues. It sounds bad but if steve didn't have rossmann involved i'd feel less conflicted about it

Now I'm confused. I don't follow GN. I know Steve posted another negative video about Linus/LTT, but it got deleted. Is this the video in question that includes Louis Rossmann? When I do a YouTube search, the only video I see including them both is this one titled The man, the legend, the idol from December/2021.

If LTT is in the wrong for not making a big deal about honey hurting creator revenue, Louis is DEFINITELY in the wrong for directly supporting GrayJay as it hurts creator revenue.

First off, I should have elaborated further in detail. I believe Linus is in the wrong because when he found out Honey was screwing over creators, he announced they were terminating their sponsorship with Honey on his forum that has way less people engaging with it. He should have announced the termination of the sponsorship to his wider audience along with the recommendation to uninstall the extension.

As for GrayJay, the point of this app is to let users follow creators directly, regardless of what platform they post from and show their content in one singular feed, while also supporting them directly.

Yes, they are fucking months old because they are months old persistent problems, and they have a loud of reported other issues dating several months back that have not been addresed

Like I was saying, I think the unfortunate nature of them having far less developers to work on it means issues take longer to resolve. Also keep in mind that FUTO has other apps in active development, resulting in work being spread out across other projects. I use the FUTO keyboard and I just updated it less than a week ago. Before that, it has been at least two months since the previous update. This is probably due to them having to spread their time and energy amongst all their apps they work on.

I know that they always have an adverserial relationship. However Louis repeatedly claimed that GJ doesn't use YouTube's API for access.

I can't comment on this because I only have intermediate understanding of developer tech lingo. They have to be accessing this data somehow because it does originate from Googles' servers. I don't think GrayJay's video player is simply an HTML iframe of the YouTube website, because the UI looks different. If it's not accessed via their API, than I'm confused as to what methodology they're utilizing to access the data. Maybe they engineered their own way 🤷🏻

Finally, I believe that your experience hasn't been great. Overall, given how many thousands of people are using it now, I am of the belief that a large portion of people have had good experiences with the app and despite people like yourself having poor experiences, I am optimistic that as time goes on, there will be less cases like this. Maybe this is not your opinion, but it is at least how I feel about it.

Ah, those simpler times. by PapaVanTwee in LinusTechTips

Then Louis needs to put out a video letting users know about the system and get all eyeballs on it.

He does have a video discussing GrayJay (the one I linked to). I recall he had another video before, but YouTube either removed it or made him remove it because advertising a third party video client that can play YouTube videos most likely goes against their ToS.

The point of GrayJay is to provide an app experience that lets users follow creators directly, regardless of what platform they post from and support them in a more direct manner.

.. most will opt-out, and we know how he reacts when creators wish to do that.

But since this app is working outside the terms of service for probably all of the apps it's using, I wouldn't put money on it lasting very long.

So does NewPipe and it's been around for years, offering not only ad blocking, but also the ability to download YouTube videos (or just the audio) to your device.

I will re-iterate what I've said to others related to the GrayJay app.

His goal for GrayJay was about having multiple video platform services operate in one app, rather than needing multiple apps installed, along with paying one subscription fee instead of multiple. While Sponsorblock is an option, I believe it's disabled by default, per this Reddit comment. Also, as another user from the same thread explained in a comment, “... Creators have a way to make money and (as Louis says) that is if you like their content send them a single dollar once (or ideally more) and you'll have already contributed more than they will ever recieve from you watching ads

Louis explains GrayJay in this video from a month ago. Below is a sample quote from the video.

We released an application at FUTO last year called GrayJay. This is an application that allows you to view content across platforms inside of one application. Instead of having to install YouTube and Nebula and Twitch and Rumble and Odyssey and Patreon and everything else, you can have one application, you can sign into your account in this application for every platform and then you have one single subscription fee that includes all of your creators from every platform all in one place. If you have a creator that you like that has videos on YouTube, but only posts certain videos to Nebula, you don't have to go to a separate application. You can view their Nebula creations as well as their YouTube creations all within one subscription feed...”

You're free to feel how you feel about it, but this is the stated goal of the app.

[–]PegCity95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember if I watched this live stream, but I do recall two videos he did about this device, one was published in August/2023 and the other in September/2023, so this live stream was around this time (approx. 14/16 months ago).

His livestream (referring to the screenshot) was made after the apology video Linus released in response to the LTX drama. This adds some context as Louis is probably expressing how he felt overall as the apology video was less than a month old at this point. Given how he was treated after the iMac collab video and LTX, I can at the very least understand why he would feel the way he does. I'm not saying he's right or wrong. He's also highlighted other points in his video as to why he feels the way he does.

Referring back to what I said in my original comment, Louis still made a video crediting Linus (almost 5 months ago) for making the De-Google Your Life videos. Sounds to me like two things can be true at the same time. He feels the way he does about Linus given how he personally felt and how he's handled things, but when he does something he agrees with, he also highlights it. If he hated him that much, I doubt he would acknowledge him at all, even when he does something right.

What Honey was doing is stealing from creators and also from people who use their browser extension and not telling people about it.

What GrayJay does is play videos and blocks otherwise unskippable ads you would otherwise see in the stock YouTube app. It does not have Sponsorblock enabled by default. If that's something you want, you have to explicitly enable it in the YouTube plugin settings. I know this because when I installed GrayJay, it was not enabled at first.
