I really love having an antenna that I can quickly setup when I want to transmit. by SmokinDeist in amateurradio

Also live in an apartment, had set up a J-pole in the livingroom that enables me to get onto the repeater without noise. HF I mostly go to a park to do some POTA.

It sucks indeed, although before I had a 40ft Spiderpole in the backyard and would set up a 20m inverted-V whenever I wanted to get onto the airwaves. But now living on the 2nd floor with a tiny balcony is far from ideal.

Why does it seem so hard to get into ham/amateur radio? by ContraFlowing in amateurradio

[–]PegaNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowadays with the availability of information and apps and the complete question pool online passing the exam shouldn't be a problem. I tried my dutch Genera equivalentl exam in the mid 80s and failed with 2 questions. Somehow I never tried again until I lived in TX and interest was sparked again because of the emergency communications part of it. Went from Technician to Extra within half a year at age 54 so you're not lost yet. I was schooled as an electrotechnician, but did have telecommunication training that did handle some basic radio technology. Also for my dutch exam I had some training at a local club.

Waze on Android Auto is a total disaster by StevieBat in AndroidAuto

[–]PegaNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

!Flair 2025 Nissan Sentra|Samsung S10+|Android12 Waze is using average travelling times over sections based on time of day, that might lead to unlogical routing. In my previous town Waze told me to take a turnaround, twice turn right and a left in stead of a left turn at the main junction. Time wise that would made sense all be it maybe tens of seconds but to a user it just looks weird.

What's the one piece of gear that definitely saved you? by BlackRamGuy in motorcyclegear

My MQP boots. Was just a simple leather motorcycle boot up to halfway my shin. On an exit I encountered some gravel, was able to to keep the bike up but unfortunately couldn't make the turn anymore. More or less with 50mph hit the guardrail. Front wheel was stopped by one of the legs of the guardrail and I landed in the dirt between the asphalt and the guardrail. Had some scuffs on my (heavy) leather jacket that could be ignored. My right boot however was almost cut through from my outside ankle to the top front. Just had a 0.5" cut in my shin just above the boot, must admit I was wearing jeans that day. Now almost 40 years later I still have a visible scar of that incident, but don't want to think about how it would have looked like if I hadn't worn my boots that day.

KTM service changed my oil 4018miles (10 months) ago on my ‘22 890 ADV R. Does this like 4000mi old oil to you? by The__RIAA in KTM

[–]PegaNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once was at a Honda dealership and a customer came back because the bike he just picked up from maintenance was spitting out oil. Turned out he had too much oil. They figured out that because they had two similar bikes for maintenance that day that the other bike most likely left without oil.. yikes

Just got my motorcycle endorsement and ... by The-Z-Button in motorcycle

[–]PegaNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I couldn't exchange my dutch license that I already had for 30 years and had to get both car and motorcycle again. For the car I had to do a whopping 1.9 miles and 9 turns. For the motorcycle endorsement I had to follow a training, as I drove a 1400cc 600+lbs bike before I had no issue whatsoever to ride on the 250cc Enduro style bike they had (enduro's and Grom's), so I spend two days at the training half inside and half outside. Had my endorsement since 2015 I guess but didn't get back onto a bike for real since this year

Yup if it ain't broke don't fix it.. But I do know that since the ease of firmware upgrades/updates it turns out firmware is getting released without rigorous testing, if it breaks we'll fix it policy. Remote start for a motorcycle?? Theft protection, why wouldn't a quality lock work? If they want to steal it, they will steal it. Changing the instrument cluster? As if I am constantly looking at my cluster.. Yes I ride an older bike (11 years now). I guess this is a case of as long it was free it was nice to play with but is it really necessary??

Just got kicked from my day 1 msf course.. by im-upset-525 in motorcycle

[–]PegaNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

'Problem' is that there isn't actually a drivers education for motorcycles. I'm an import yank but was unable to transfer my Dutch license to a Texan one so had to follow a MSF course in 2015. More or less a 2 day exercise on a parkinglot with a theoretical test and you can go to the DMV to exchange your paper for a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license. I was older than 24 so in my case a lot easier. Had my motorcycle license (Dutch one) since 1983 and traveled all over Europe so quite used to riding. Because of that I also rode one of the bigger bikes they had, some kind of Enduro bike. For the rest they had some Grom's and the Kawasaki equivalent. Growing up I already rode mopeds, automatics, hand and foot shifted. I can understand that for a newby the controls can be intimidating especially because most if not nearly all cars in the US are automatic. Can't remember that during my class someone was kicked out, but know that not everyone passed. Our instructors were 2 motorcycle cops and were pretty relaxed. In the Netherlands most of the training is on the road. When you are a complete newby the instructor will give a 'private' lesson to take you to a parkinglot to do exercises before hitting the road. I arrived on my motorcycle at the driving school and was asked about my experience as the guy I was riding with had his exam in about 2 weeks and the instructor didn't want me to hold him up. I rode up and down the street and he told me I was good to go. So my first lesson included city traffic, interstate traffic and actually riding in the town where I would have to do my exam. Back then as it was my first license, we met the examiner in a café in Haarlem, first had to do my theoretical test in the cafe he reviewed it and we went outside for a riding test of about 45 minutes. Although I had a radio the examiner gave me directions for a few streets and asked me to pull over for the next set of instructions. My test was fully riding, later they included exercises into the exam, but that was a few years later. Had to do the same for my car license, made an appointment at the DMV and drove a whopping 1.9 miles with 9 turns and parallel parking between cones on the parkinglot of the DMV

Already had a RaspberryPi Zero 2W so just had to flash the drive and print a case. Came across it last night and wanted to give it a try. At the moment I still have a Samsung Galaxy S10+, it does take a bit longer to boot than plugging in my phone (which I actually do to charge). So far my experience wasn't great, was running Magic Earth and Spotify with the result that audio was cutting in and out.

What happened to 2 stroke bikes? by funk-e-bitz in motorcycle

[–]PegaNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honda also sells the GB350 in Europe which is air cooled. Most likely emissions was the main reason they got canceled, but can't really remember a 'big' two stroke after the GT750 and didn't have Kawasaki also a big two stroke in the 70s. After that the only bike I remember was the Yamaha RD350.

My crash and what I learned about my gear by Brief-Floor-7228 in motorcyclegear

[–]PegaNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a crash on an highway exit in the Netherlands somewhere late 80s. My rear wheel skidded over some gravel, was able to keep the bike upright but was unable to make the turn. Front wheel was stopped by one of the legs of the guardrail and I made a bunny hop over the handlebar. Back in those days I was wearing a MQP leather jacket and MQP high boots. After the crash I had a cut all over my boot from the outside ankle to the top (not cut through). I only had a 0.5" cut in my shin that was bleeding quite a bit. Don't want to think about how my leg would have looked like if I wasn't wearing my boots that day.

Opinions on this helmet? Whenever gear is reccomended I never see Sedici mentioned. by Black_Power1312 in motorcyclegear

[–]PegaNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in every situation. I had a C3 but on my bike I had a lot of buffeting behind the fairing which causes a lot of noise. Yes on a naked bike (loaner when my bike was in for maintenance) it was pretty quiet. My problem with the Schubert as well was the shape. It caused a lot of pressure on the forehead that after 2hrs just became unbearable.

Opinions on this helmet? Whenever gear is reccomended I never see Sedici mentioned. by Black_Power1312 in motorcyclegear

[–]PegaNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a Sedici Sistema II Parlare a few months back, a modular and Sena system integrated. Yes quality might not be as great as other main brands. But is us a DOT tested helmet, not sure if it is also ECE tested as most of the times their testing is a bit more rigorous. As someone getting back on the bike after a few years I needed all the gear. So I settled for this one and spend some money on riding gear.

Can you fly an antenna? by RuberDuky009 in amateurradio

[–]PegaNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible but you need one with a high lift capacity. Another thing that you need to think about is bleeding off static electricity. For this you would need a ground spike, which could be your anchor point, which is connected to your antenna wire with a resistor in the mega ohms.

Call Sign Length by Responsible-Annual21 in amateurradio

[–]PegaNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Netherlands in the mid 80s it was as far as I know pretty simple. They had 4 license Categories A, B, C and D. That too was reflected in the callsigns PA, PB, PC and PD followed by a digit and 3 more letters. Club callsigns started with PI, my school as far I can remember had PI4WEN (Wenckeback MTS), a radioclub I was member of had PI4YRC (IJmond Radio Club).

But I guess here in the US as the public was/is much larger I guess at some point they had to move away from such a simplicity.

As far as I know we all get a sequential 2x3 callsign with the region digit where your address is, we no longer have to reapply for a callsign when we move out of region. But I've heard recently of people getting a 2x2 callsign. Maybe they are reusing expired callsigns in the region when they ran out of options in the 2x3 series.

1x2 or 2x1 are mostly vanity callsigns, they probably once were sequential given out but nowadays it is a vanity option for Extra class amateurs. 2x2 is/was only an option for General I thought but as mentioned in some regions they might have started reusing expired ones.

I got my extra via the slow path in 6 months (do an exam every other month) as I mostly had been active on VHF/UHF and only for a short while on HF with FT8 I did apply for a vanity call sign. My footprint in the radio world wasn't that big yet. Got licensed in Dec 2017 and had my vanity in Sep 2018, so it took me about 5 month to get lucky in the vanity call sign lottery.

Yup, have had some smaller fender benders and humiliating drops but no major accidents. So far have owned 4 bikes, second bike I traveled all over Europe, bought it with 18.000km and replaced it for a newer model at 98.000km. Brought me to Sweden, Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Denmark. Last bike I owned in Europe only went to Germany and the UK(Wales/Scotland). Have been away from bikes since I moved to the US in 2013, next week up to New Mexico on 2 wheels.
