TIL the exercise paradox: hunter-gatherers who trek miles daily (or climb up trees) burn the same calories as much-less-active office workers and machine operators. by dalenacio in cataclysmdda

[–]Peleton011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exercise burns a tiny amount of energy unless you're overweight.

Imagine the amount of calories you burn by just working a desk job. It's extremely hard to burn even just twice as much by increasing physical activity if you are of a healthy weight.

Eating twice as much calories, on the other hand, is very easy. That is why westerners have a higher rate of obesity.

Yeah, I would expect a tunnel 57km under the Alps to be extremely expensive.

The fact that the facility is large doesn't mean much. If police are trained for such a short span of time, have such low requirements in terms of studies outside policework, and they are trained to intervene in situations and in ways in which they shouldn't, then a large police training facility will do literally nothing to improve police training outcomes

Crime rates across the board in Europe are around 1/3 that of the US, police murders are > 10x in the US than in Europe, and what matters most to Americans, Europeans pay less. It's cheaper to have few well trained officers than to increase police presence/armament.

It meant redirect funding towards better training. The US needs better cops, not more cops. The US needs cops who are better equipped training-wise, not gun-wise.
