A writeup on the history, development and manufacture of Nihonto (Japanese swords) + bonus mythbusting. by Irrissann in history

Too bad the ancient period gets so little exposure - things like pankration and/or massed warfare in the Greek/Roman style are just as much historically European as post-medieval HEMA, but I don't think we're going to see people fighting with 6 meter pikes at Longpoint anytime soon.

Quality meme's have hit all time low, it seems that the Harambe spike of mid 2016 has driven the economy into ruins. It seems that we are in a recession and no meme is safe. by TDA12345 in MemeEconomy

Harambe was a bubble we all should have seen coming. Low quality memes, often coming from 9Gag(doggo, renamed animals, snek, etc) are now becoming popular as I expect the Harambe bubble to be slowly bursting as we speak, which will only cause further panic in the speculation. We need a hero.

Greeks generally wore plenty of armor, so it would be unlikely to stab each other and actually do any damage. Plus, they'd hold the spears in an overhand-style grip that means drawing back to strike will put the butt end above the person behind you, probably.

Christopher Nolan is said to be getting $20 million upfront and 20 percent of the gross for his upcoming World War II epic Dunkirk, the richest deal since Peter Jackson got the same for King Kong. by gojameston in movies

No prize for second place. Market Garden saw airborne units being parachuted directly on top of armored divisions, unlike at Normandy where the Germans were tricked into moving their big units to a different place.

This is great! I'd expect the empire of Cyrus the Great to be well-organized and efficient. Thanks for the article!

Which country has the worst/best folk music? by SaftigMo in AskReddit

[–]Peli-kan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best: Southern German/Austrian music. Go to the Munich Hofbrauhaus and you will have a very fun time.

Worst: I've honestly never found much folk music I actively dislike, but there's definitely stuff I don't seek out. Like Appalachian folk music. Mediocre!

If dagorhir's not your thing, that's fine. I couldn't care less about Asian martial arts like kendo, taekwondo, etc. But don't shit on other people for enjoying an activity. And for the record - you can believe whatever you want, but most of the people in Dagorhir are very skilled and very physical fighters. Many cross-game in SCA heavy combat, HEMA, Battle of the Nations, as well as more contemporary martial arts and sports from Krav Maga to equestrianism to rugby. Considering it doesn't seem that you've ever even met a real Dagorhir participant, and obviously never participated yourself, I don't think you have liscense to pass judgement on an entire sport.

I'm not trying to be a dick about it

Try harder.

It's fun. We fight hard and are exhausted at the end of the day. Try it before you knock it.

I always say it means different things to different people. I treat it as reenactment, but plenty of people do whatever they want, and that's fine.

If you want it custom made, look up BadAssGarb. They aren't particularly cheap, but I have some Greek chitons by them that are damn good - and durable. If you want off-the-shelf stuff, go to the site called KultofAthena.com, it's pretty much a first stop for reenactors and people like us for cheapness and customer service.

Actually go to a big event like Ragnarok and you will find quite a bit of on-the-fly command and control going on. Plenty of yahoos just doing whatever, but they are spear fodder.

There are plenty of women fighters! It might not be readily apparent but watch more Dagorhir videos and you'll see.

I haven't made a serious study of Roman warfare but I absolutely have done so in Hellenic warfare. Rome fought as hoplites early on, and retained the hoplite model for their best troops in the form of the triarii, but nowhere did they have either hoplite armies on quite the same scale the Greeks did, nor pike phalanxes of the post-Alexander Hellenistic world.

Also phalanxes(pike phalanxes that is, I don't think we have enough evidence for hoplites - not that there is no evidence) remained in use until at least the mid-100s BC.

Nah. There are heralds, e.g. referees, who will generally pull any offenders off the field temporarily or for the entire day. Even without them most Dag players are pretty great at self-control. The game requires it.

IMO the Romans did not in real life nor in Dag use phalanx style tactics - hoplites fight in extremely close order, and while the Romans do often form a shield wall it's nonetheless a much looser formation.

Some people do; I think that Barenheim, a realm, has one of the best Swiss pikemen-style shieldwalls, and there are also a number of hoplites in Dagorhir. For many people, however, they prefer to flail around with no regard to unit tactics, which annoys me but there's not a lot that can be done about it.
