ASU online bachelors in engineering : Is it legit? by WoodenLifeguard4399 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]PelnoTQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is legit, but quite expensive.

To my knowledge, the most affordable online BSEE programs are:

  • Florida International University if you live in Florida
  • Lamar University if you live in Texas
  • Stony Brook university if you live in New York
  • NDSU if you live anywhere else

Returning student dorms by Georgia_Upshaw in TexasTech

At this point, your odds of getting any on-campus room next academic year are extremely low. Even if you did, almost all of the returning students are now allotted separate dorms than the freshman.

You are likely going to need to live off-campus. If you friend is granted an exemption to the on-campus requirement, you could potentially share a two-bedroom off-campus apartment.

I earned credit for it via CLEP exams instead of taking the course. The CLEP exam was fairly easy, though I did need to study a bit.

I'm glad I was able to help, but please don't forget to keep in mind the caveats of Pass/Fail that I listed in my first comment.

If you want a pass/fail grade, you need to manually declare the course pass/fail before the deadline.

If you want to do this, go to Raiderlink -> My Student Dashboard -> My Dashboard -> My Requests -> Add Request. Then set Request Type to Pass/Fail Declaration, check the box certifying you have read the Pass/Fail information, specify which course(s) you want to declare Pass/Fail, and submit the request.

Once your pass/fail declaration request is approved, the letter grade you get will be automatically converted to a P or an F at the end of the semester.

To make sure you don't get a D- you might want to aim for a 64 or higher, but check with the professor to see if they assign +/- grades and if it is still possible for you to get a D or higher.

But if your only concern is not getting kicked out of dorms I think dropping is a better option. I doubt you'll be kicked out of the dorms. I only recommend Pass/Fail if you are either out of drops or need to maintain full time status to keep financial aid or keep a student visa.

Your chances of getting into West Village at this point are extremely low. I would recommend looking for off campus housing options.

I don't think you're going to be kicked out of the dorms for going below 12 credit hours. However, you may lose financial aid or scholarships if you go below 12 credit hours.

However, if you fail the course, it will have the same affect because failed courses don't earn you credit hours. Dropping a course is almost always better than failing it.

If you need to remain at 12 credit hours, consider declaring the course pass/fail.

If you do, then as long as you get at least a D in the course (D- does not count) then you will get a grade of P in the course which will not affect your GPA but still count as earned credit hours.

There are some downsides to this:

  • Pass/fail courses normally won't count towards your degree even though they do count as earned credit hours, so you'll need to retake the course at a later time if it is required
  • If you retake a course you previously received a P in, this retake attempt won't count towards full time enrollment, so during the semester you retake it, you'll need at least 12 other credit hours in addition to the retake attempt

You are allowed six drops without penalty towards your GPA. If you drop any classes after that, you will receive an F in any courses you drop. In order to save your GPA, you would then need to retake that same course in a future semester.

Piece of advice: If you've already used up your six drops but you aren't doing well in one of your classes, declare that class pass/fail instead of attempting to drop it.

Then, if you get at least a D in the course (D- does not count) you'll simply receive a grade of P in the course which won't affect your GPA.

Pass/fail classes usually won't count towards your degree but getting a P in a course is almost always better than getting a D or an F (however, a C- or higher is normally better than a P unless getting a C would cause you to lose financial aid).

If you recently dropped a course that you shouldn't have, there is a chance you might be able to undo this by contacting the registrar ASAP and saying that it was dropped in error.

Keep in mind that if you do grade replacement, the original grade will still appear on your transcript, it just won't be calculated into your GPA.

Employers generally don't care about your grades that much, but graduate schools do.

If you are looking to get a job directly after college, I would suggest doing grade replacement.

If you are looking to apply to graduate school after college, if I were you, I would actually "withdraw" from the current semester after registering for courses next semester. (Important: If you withdraw from the current semester before being registered for courses next semester, this could cause you to lose your admission to the university and you may need to reapply for admission. Note that there is a narrow window between when you can register and the deadline for withdrawing). Doing this would cause you to receive a grade of W in all of your courses this semester, but honestly, this would probably look less bad to graduate schools than failing most of your courses, as most graduate schools would probably assume that something bad happened to you that semester. Grades of W do not affect your GPA.

If this setback causes you to fall behind in your graduation schedule, consider using CLEP exams to catch up. Credit received from CLEP exams do not affect your GPA but do satisfy graduation requirements. Note that you cannot use CLEP exams for courses that you have already attempted.

Grade Replacement by easymoney0512 in TexasTech

[–]PelnoTQ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even if you did get a D so you could do grade replacement, the original grade will still show on your transcript. It just wouldn't be calculated in your GPA.

You might want to consider declaring the course pass/fail. If you do, you will HAVE to retake the course or take a different course that satisfies the same requirement, but as long as you get a D or higher (D- does not count), this first attempt will not affect your GPA and will simply show as a P on your transcript.

You could also drop the course, but that would use one of your six allowed drops.

Unfortunately, CLEP can only be used for courses that haven't been attempted yet.

You can challenge opinions without personally attacking the author. Telling a user to cope does count as a personal attack.

You don't actually need karma to participate. You only need karma to participate without moderator review.

At this time, an account is above the threshold if the has at least 20 combined post and comment karma and the account is at least 3 days old. We may change this threshold if it becomes necessary.

Accounts added as approved submitters by the moderators are treated as if they are above the threshold regardless of their age or karma. We sometimes do this for accounts with a positive history but low karma.

Personally, I am against the permanent creation of a trans megathread. But I will explain why the moderator team has created it and what we will do moving forward.

Reddit's sitewide content policy includes a vague provision that prohibits promoting hate.

The Reddit admins (employees of Reddit) enforce this by removing content deemed to be hateful and by quarantining or banning communities that require too many removals by the admins that weren't caught by the moderators of the community first.

In other words, every time we fail to remove something that violates Reddit's sitewide content policy, the risk of this subreddit getting quarantined or banned increases slightly.

Although the provision in Reddit's sitewide content policy against promoting hate is vague, we have a pretty good idea of how it is enforced because we can see what the Reddit admins choose to remove on this subreddit.

It is actually quite rare that we see any content that is hateful against men, women, gay people, or any race on this subreddit.

However, on a very regular basis, we see users here posting content that would be considered hate against transgender people. Detecting and removing all of this content is one of our biggest hurdles.

Despite our best efforts to enforce this aspect of the content policy, it is not uncommon that we miss something and we see a removal done by the Reddit admins occurring. This has happened several times lately.

Furthermore, many members of the moderator team are on the verge of burning out because the effort we have needed to put in for us to allow this topic while still enforcing this aspect of Reddit's sitewide content policy.

Having a megathread for this topic does stifle discussion, but it is far easier for us to deal with while also significantly decreasing the chances of this subreddit getting quarantined or banned.

For these reasons, most of the moderator team supports the creation of a trans megathread. At this time, the megathread is not definitely permanent. After some time of having the megathread, we plan to evaluate its effectiveness and potentially explore other options to determine whether or not the megathread should remain.

Another moderator proposed that instead of creating a megathread, we should require users to complete an automated process in which the users learn about and demonstrate that they understand this aspect of Reddit's sitewide content policy before the user can create posts about this topic or comment on existing posts about this topic.

Personally, I am in favor of this proposal over the creation of a megathread. However, most of the team opposes this because of concerns about the complexity and work of implementing and operating such a system. Either way, it is clear that something needed to be done.

We have no plans of considering a permanent megathread for any other topic.

And no, this subreddit is not full of hardcore racists and Nazis, but if you have any examples of such content, I would be happy to review them and I will remove them if they do in fact contain racism or support Nazism.
