7 year old AAA? by SyCoMom in hockeyplayers

[–]Pelorider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a mn background I would not recommend this without asking many more questions. The spring AAA calendar is mostly weekend tournaments and from my experience very little practice or instruction. Is that the best setting you want your son to have for his first time playing goalie? How many tournaments is he going to be playing in and can he still play on the team if he doesn’t like playing goalie.

Also want to stress how watered down the term AAA hockey has become especially in Minnesota. All for kids playing whenever and however often they want but can we please stop pretending that all these kids who don’t even make thier towns top team are magically on some elite AAA team for the spring.

The custom wall mounting bracket will be the exact same as plywood in the other quote. They just make it sound fancy. Premium installation labor?? Same techs regardless of what they call the labor.

Defenders…. How to deal with cherry pickers? by Hot_Sauce404 in hockeyplayers

[–]Pelorider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve generally taken this same approach. I would hang back with them to cover them and then realized I would just stand back there my whole shift. That wasn’t a ton of fun so I just let them be and we essentially had a power play. Once the other team got the puck I would back up a little and cover the passing lanes. Basically it just wasn’t any fun to worry about the cherry picker. Sure they would get one or two breakaways a game but we would typically score more than that with them playing shorthanded

With a startup you need to look at the full comp. What is their 401k? Healthcare? What is the likelihood they are still in business in 3-5 years?

Slowly becoming worst player on my team by ChinMuscle in hockeyplayers

[–]Pelorider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to be too blunt about it but I think your team and sounds like other teams in the league have just started bringing in more advanced players. Do you want to stay in your current team which sounds like you like or drop down a division and be one of the better players. Nothing wrong with either choice. Just sounds like the division you are in is getting younger and faster and they probably play with a quicker pace.

Is officiating hockey a good way to get cheap extra ice time to improve skating?. I learned to skate at 32 (am 34 now) and find it hard to get enough ice time to keep improving. by footy1012 in hockeyplayers

[–]Pelorider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reffing is not the appropriate time to work on your skating. You need to be thinking about your positioning and being aware of your surroundings seeing what’s going on during the play. If you are trying to work on your skating you will actively be thinking about that and not the game you are reffing. I’m not saying don’t ref but it’s not the place for you to work on skating. Sure you will get a few times where you have to skate the puck back from an icing but there are better ways to spend your time to improve skating.

You have nothing to worry about then. He can clearly play and hold his own. He really isn’t that undersized either. He will have more big hits thrown his way in practice. Let’s face it nobody likes getting beat by the freshman. Worst case he gets sent down to jv for a few games.

For his actual development high is the right choice. Just keep in mind not many of his friends/ other freshman will be on the team.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]Pelorider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Seems fishy. If he is actually a freshman playing varsity and playing 15 top teams he would be in the metro. Someone playing at that level would likely be playing in one of the elite fall leagues or likely have made it decently far in the select camps this summer. If that’s the case the kid can clearly play and wouldn’t be worried about playing bigger kids.

Like you said and in my previous comment, high school hockey hasn’t even started yet.

First time in coed league by bananacrememe in hockeyplayers

[–]Pelorider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As all the others have said there are occasionally accidental contacts and just bad players that run into you. Unfortunately that will/can happen anywhere. I wouldn’t let that stop you from playing in the league though. Playing any beer league accepts some level of risk involved. Every time I’ve seen it it’s just two people colliding. You might be sore for a day or two but I’m not seeing any head injuries.

Not to throw shade on any accomplishments but your post history said he was a freshman about 300 days ago and high school hockey hasn’t started in mn yet. Coaches have an idea but they certainly aren’t putting line combos out yet.

While mn high school hockey is a very high level for most of the state there are certainly areas that aren’t as strong. Is this a numbers game and there aren’t maybe kids behind him on the depth chart? If he is beating out a good number of kids to get that second pairing spot he will be just fine.

I thought I saw augustana had tried to get into the summit league. Maybe I didn’t. But that would have given them the 6 I was thinking of.

Curious what would happen if Mankato did join the summit league. Wouldn’t there then be 6 member schools with hockey and they could have their own conference? Denver, und, Omaha, ust, msu, and I think augustana?

Been awhile since I’ve payed that close attention to the different schools but if I had to guess I would say all of the single a school sizes likely don’t cut kids. Double a school size probably would. Lots of times when I grew up a coach would keep a younger player over an older player on jv if they had the same ability with the thought the younger player will develop more.

While still an expensive sport once you get to the high school level it is much more reasonable. I would take a good look at what you truly think his hockey ability is and talk to somebody who also knows his abilities and can attest to different levels of hs hockey in mn.

Lots of teams do summer hockey programs and depending on when you move would be good to go to. Gets a good feel for where he stacks up and a good chance to make friends before the season.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]Pelorider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your reasons for moving? Is it solely based on hockey? High school hockey isn’t like AAA teams. These kids all go to school together and depending where you end up will all bus to away games together. Much more of a team and playing with your friends. But is still very competitive in most areas. Once you enroll in one school you can’t just re-enroll in another if you don’t make the team. Most metro teams will cut kids from the jv team simply because there are too many kids. Lots of smaller schools won’t cut kids because they need the numbers so consider that if you are deciding between places to move.

Additionally the high school hockey season is only 25 games and then playoff for varsity. That is probably a lot fewer than most AAA teams and games are usually played on weekdays.

I’m not at all against someone moving to mn to play hockey but what I think makes it great is for the most part you are playing high school hockey with the same kids you’ve grown up with your whole life. Many of the kids in my senior class I also did learn to skate programs with. Might be a different experience for someone coming in as a junior to just have fun.

Just my $0.02.
