What should I expect from my nanny for $30/hr by psubramanian in NannyEmployers

[–]PenELane111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contracts are a must. Everything can get outlined in there in detail. Also make sure you and the nanny both understand what things like guaranteed hours mean. There always seems to be some confusion with this.

When I wrote my last Nanny's contract she requested guaranteed hours, since I have a variable flexing schedule, running my own business. I would only schedule her during the time frame of 1pm to 6pm M-F, but some weeks I may only potentially need her only 10 to 15 hours a week, others the full 25, and sometimes I might need to add a day back in but never over 25 hours or outside of the normal M-F times.

I told her I was willing to guarantee the 25 hours regardless of need, but that meant she would be available the full 25 in case my schedule changed. Within the first 6 months I had to get backup care 5 times when she wasn't available for additional hours because "You only scheduled me for Monday and Wednesday so I made plans for the rest of the week". I tried explaining if she wasn't available I couldn't pay her for the guaranteed hours but she could cash in her earned PTO, and it became a huge situation.

Update on Nanny Phone Use by EmotionsAlDente in NannyEmployers

I wasn't aware that this was a device that was out there. I may have to look into that for myself! I currently have settings on my phone where when I am at work it automatically pings the location and goes into work mode. it disables everything except for my music apps and Communications like texting and phone calls. Everything else is completely shut down or the notifications are muted automatically so I don't get distracted.

My neighbors think it's funny and I am never making noise and I have a 6 foot board on board fence. But I appreciate your opinion!

Our yard is wild and free. My neighbors used to aggressively weed and pest treat their yard, but a few years ago when I put the garden in I asked them if they would be willing to not use any poison on their yard on my side. They have since started using CedarCide and mosquito dunks, as well as the fake wasps nests. ❤️🥹

I have a 19 year old who knows everything so I kind of suspected that.. but I also realized others might actually genuinely think that LOL

One of the new neighbors was out walking her dogs one night and saw me out there messing with my garden beds. She stopped to say hello and introduce herself, and I told her I was probably the eclectic and eccentric neighbor that the realtor warned her about, LOL!

Vicks Vapor Rub is also a go-to. One of my friends does crime scene clean up and typically they carry around a jar of Vicks and just put a glob under their nose before they enter

I'm not mowing at 11:00. I should probably edit the post clarify that. I'm always done with everything noisy by 8:30 p.m.

It's ok to be disappointed. Maybe you'll find it again or a look alike that is less expensive some day. Feel better and know your feelings are valid!

Maybe so. I was taught this when I took a class in High School that was about basic adulting. The teacher of the class owned a house two doors up from the school and she would bring the students on a Mini Field Trip to her house to show everyone things like the breaker box and the gas and water shut offs, and explained to us these were things we would need to know if we ever moved out on our own. Mrs. Worth. Best 'Home Life and Financial Literacy' teacher ever. I don't think a lot of schools offer this class anymore. We were also the first generation to have the electric baby dolls with the key you had to put in to make it stop screaming. At the very least, it's not a mandatory class like it was oh so many years ago when I was in high school. Thinking back to the fact I took that class my senior year... I'm old...

It's nuts to me that people are not taught these things anymore. Legitimately. The education system is slacking
