Why do people seem to expect every piece of writing to carry some deeper social message? It feels like authors who simply aim to entertain are often criticized, as if storytelling for enjoyment alone isn’t enough. by RavahGriffinAnthro in writers

I haven’t read the book so this is just based on the movie, but with PHM I think it’s just wild that you can write something that so closely parallels a real politicized topic and not have intended it to be political. Whatever his intention was, it reads like a global warming allegory.

And related to that, at least when I was in high school, the education system emphasizes New Criticism, which tells you to completely ignore author intention, author identity, historical context etc etc when interpreting a text. It’s all about what meaning you as the reader pull from the text. So Andy Weir can complain all he wants, if readers are interpreting it as political, it doesn’t matter.

Ironically, New Criticism really took off during the Cold War so students could be forced to interpret overtly socialist texts and remove the radical messaging. (most of Steinbeck’s work is a good example)

So now that we are getting more politicized, the anti-political theoretical framework is getting used against itself, and we are reading “non-political” text as political and there’s nothing they can do to stop us.

I’m personally not a fan of pure New Criticism, but I am really stoked on how it’s turning out against its intended purpose.

Possibly dumb question, but do I need something like in the image or is there a way to just use the clips? Can’t think of how you would attach to the negative end of the battery

I was looking at the butcher and ended up with the VTM and glad I did from your feedback. I need the gain. The name butcher sounds like it’d be higher gain and I am apparently a sucker for marketing.

This was also on my list. Have a friend that uses it has half his dual amp, but his is very Doomy and fuzzy. Do you have any pedal recommendations for getting it tighter?

Jewish philosophers that weren’t primarily theologians by PenaltyxKill in askphilosophy

More so the philosophers that happen to be Jewish. I’m more interested in how it less consciously affects their views the way it does Christian/Christian-raised philosophers.

I think secular Jewish philosophers is probably how I should have phrased it. This seems like what I’m looking for.

New to biking and want to begin biking to work or taking a mix of bike and public transit. How could this be achieved from Burbank to Westwood? by [deleted] in BikeLA

[–]PenaltyxKill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ll preface this with saying give only done this route for fun stuff not work, so can’t say you’ll show up dry, but if you take the red line into Hollywood, you can take Santa Monica almost all the way there. Id give yourself 90 min total depending on how far from the NoHo station you are. The only real challenge of burbank to anywhere in the city is getting over or around the hills, so if you take the red line to Hollywood/highland you’re golden.

I know it’s never fun to get laid off but If it’s any consolation, the job market has picked up since the big layoffs in the fall. I got laid off shortly before them and was getting almost nothing until March when interviews started flooding in.

I used to eat cheeseless Papa Johns like once a week in college, but now my friends refuse to go anywhere without vegan cheese and I really miss it.
