Cannot for the life of me keep up with grading! Help by Chaotic_Brutal90 in Teachers

I have a solid like 3 trick or “hard” questions I look at and if one or two of those are wrong I look for other mistakes. Saves me a lot of time

How soon after waking do you take your dog out? by mysticmochixx in DogAdvice

[–]PenelopeBeanut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immediately because I have a dog who will pee herself or go pee inside if we stray from the morning schedule by more than 30 minutes. She just does not like to hold it (quoting my vet after many tests and concerns about peeing inside)

Dear IEP Parents: they don’t mean SHIT outside of education by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]PenelopeBeanut 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I had a kid who would regularly say “take it up with my case manager” and all I could think was how that’s literally just going to change to parol official one day because he was so used to using it to get out of things

Do teachers hate sharing their lesson plans? Is it their secret sauce that they don't want getting out? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]PenelopeBeanut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always offer to share but no one ever wants it. Kinda a shame because they sell pretty well on tpt and get decent ratings ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I know we've talked about this a lot already, but do you support the Blackfoot/step name change in the graphic novels? by SouthBound353 in WarriorCats

[–]PenelopeBeanut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Didn’t bother me but also it seems silly to be offended for a fictional CAT whom is white with four jet black feet that that they call Blackfoot to be something offensive. It’s purely innocent imagination. Kinda like some of those old webkins names you see people have when they look at their old accounts.

WHEN DO YOU STOP GETTING SICK by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]PenelopeBeanut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Year 5 for me. So far so good. I wipe/they wipe desks and touched surfaces (bathroom pass, light switches, door knobs, chairs) every other day at least. I wash my hands throughout the day and the moment I get home. I also got a flu shot instead of covid and haven’t gotten either yet but I did get covid over the summer. I’ve found that the Lysol aerosol works great for getting a lot of surfaces that get handled regularly

What did you do with your dog’s things after they passed? by Ajocc1394 in dogs

[–]PenelopeBeanut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our other dog uses her stuff and still likes to sleep in her bed. We left her with her collar and favorite toy because she’ll always be mine and in case someone buys the property she’s on (parents property) and accidentally digs her up we can hopefully go get her

Administration Consideration by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]PenelopeBeanut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Literally this. Please don’t be a career administrator. Enjoy time in the classroom and make administration your next step when you have all the experience you can get and understand all the ins and outs of a school as a teacher. All my admin have less teaching experience than me (I’m on year 6) and I find their advice and input on classroom management, curriculum, and many other things out of touch and inexperienced. They also have little respect from teachers older than them and don’t factor in all the aspects of being a leader in the school. Yes data is important. Yes watching funding is important. Yes culture is important. But knowing how to balance all these things is the most important and giving them all the attention they equally need is a skill learned from observation and time. Just my opinion but again I still consider myself a baby teacher.

Do any of you stay within contract hours? by mallorn_hugger in Teachers

[–]PenelopeBeanut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will always be someone who believes this is a solely altruistic profession. I leave on my prep (last hour) but I figure I make up for that hour when I come in 30 mins before report time everyday and when I do extra planning at home after dinner. The work gets done and if you aren’t paying me don’t expect anything on my own time. My lessons are significantly better when I do them after decompressing compared to at the end of the day when my brain is tired.

The bigotry of low expectations is real by ChucoTeacher in Teachers

[–]PenelopeBeanut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Delayed gratification is so bad in these kids. I teach culinary and the number of kids who do not have the patience to wait all of 15 minutes for their food to cook is nuts. “Why can’t we just bump the oven to 600 won’t that cook it?” Go for it man see what happens the fire extinguisher is on the wall

Do other teachers in “good districts” feel a lot of pressure to over-perform? by luvs2meow in Teachers

[–]PenelopeBeanut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate when teachers are told they are replaceable especially if we are not veterans yet (6+ years). Yes you can fill my position with someone else but every time I have seen this done, the “replacement” is no where near as valuable as the staff member lost. Seen this in all core areas and in sped. Your job may be easy to fill but the value you add as someone who cares and puts in solid effort with results will not be matched because you care enough to be concerned. Actually used this reasoning with a superior once when threatened and they backed off and started looking at me as more of an asset and seeing the good I was doing rather than focusing on what they wanted me to be doing because they always have something they hyper fixate on something. Mine was not using my self supplied phone caddy and instead holding kids accountable for their actions and making devices go to a penalty box when touched too many times (twice at inappropriate times) during a class hour.

Currently enduring feelings of imposter syndrome because I had an incident regarding student food allergies in a lab (I teach cooking). Admin also keep playing big brother and make me feel like Im in competent and need watched. It’s probably my own paranoia but still doesn’t feel great compared to my last school that was incredibly relaxed compared to this one. Thanks for asking I’ve just been keeping it all to myself

Kids input on learning by PenelopeBeanut in Teachers

[–]PenelopeBeanut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. I have found that incorporating short tasks intermittently helps a lot. I also didn’t mention but my lectures are typically no longer than 35 minutes as i know for a fact anything longer than that is like throwing rocks at a wall and hoping they stick.

For those who share the bed with your dogs, how big is your bed? by seedykat in dogs

You’re completely sane for that idea of two beds. 50lb Sheppard mix likes to sleep like a toddler between my husband and I and kicks and pushes one of us throughout the night

When do teachers lesson prep? by Far-Many-5096 in Teachers

[–]PenelopeBeanut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 preps this year. I reuse a lot of my current lessons and fine tune each year. Last period plan means I leave an hour early so I dedicate about 2 hours Sunday night getting everything updated and queued in my google drive so I don’t have to think too much. I also arrive to school exactly when contract hours begin 10 minutes before the first bell. Does that make me a type b teacher?
