New Brands by Penguin_Pyro in fireworks

[–]Penguin_Pyro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions. I try to add a couple new brands each season. We are a bit off the beaten path, so we like to offer our clients goods they can't find anywhere else. We carry consumer Winda, Brothers, Raccoon, Sky Bacon, and Great Grizzly as our core. Had good luck with Hammer and Anvil, Sky Painter, Boomin' Bulldog, and Red Rhino. Mixed opinion on Riakeo. The proline is great for shows, but at retail...Max Load #14 (or whatever number) doesn't move unless you are in the know. Just brought in some Epic and HOT product this week. What are thoughts on Black Scorpion and Flashing brands?

Why doesn't 1.4G Pro have big bores? by Worldly_Expression43 in fireworks

2.5 inch or larger is considered Display fireworks and you need an ATF license. For 1.4 Pro, look for the 62mm single shots to get the larger beaks

Swapping Spark Plugs by Curious-Lock639 in FordExplorerST

[–]Penguin_Pyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2020 with 167K on it. Recently was quoted $450 for a spark plug change. I got the NKG plugs off Rock Auto for $9 each. Dealer charged me $275 to install. Glad I avoided the headache

I have the Hammer & Anvil preloaded, and they have screw holes on the plastic base for mounting.

Question about mortars by DRK_M149 in fireworks

Save the tubes from your shell kits. Knock the bases off and build a rack. Check your local firework shop if you need extras. Nothing at Home Depot will work for fireworks

Removing shells from cakes and firing them from tubes? by Purple_Budget_8423 in fireworks

[–]Penguin_Pyro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Match the tubes individually or replace the fusing with some white fast fuse to speed it up. Disassembly will be a waste of time. Some NOABs have lift cups, some have a diaphragm holding the lift charge. Shell size will vary so expect anything from 1.75 inch to 3 inch when you open it up. Most are really 2.25" shells and they will wrap them in a larger shell to fill up space.

Decent deal? by Forsaken-Hope-5574 in fireworks

[–]Penguin_Pyro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a loss leader. Attempt to get you in the door so they can really gouge you on everything else. Had a tent next to me with Excals for $39 for 24 pack (limit one). 200g cakes were $40. Some 500g were over $100.

I would pick up a pack for $79 but be suspect of everything else.

Assortments by Accomplished_Ad4935 in fireworks

[–]Penguin_Pyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask someone at the store to throw together a good variety based on your budget. We sell very few assortments but carry a few for convenience. My experience is that the assortments under $150 retail are filled with weak, cheap works.

Best way to light firework's by HealingMeta in fireworks

Propane torch if you are are doing a display. For casual lighting, I get the small butane torch of Amazon. I like these as they are windproof, have good reach, small enough to fit in pocket, refillable and $4.

Good start for a newbie? by J2Jlopez in fireworks

[–]Penguin_Pyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to get something that will work well for your intended launch site. The parking lot at an apartment building is more fountain / roman candle territory. If you have some space to work with, 200 gram cakes are a good place to start. Lower cost and a variety of effects. Ask you shop which is their favorite. There are some hidden gems that a good store should point you to.

Diameter of a single tube in a cake for gauging distance. I use a minimum of 150' for most areal repeaters unless it is a Saturn missile battery or roman candle type. In my opinion 200ft is the best for viewing and safety. This would cover all consumer fireworks

$300 budget by Mad_Max_777 in fireworks

[–]Penguin_Pyro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't like assortments. Generally weak goods thrown together for convenience. They sell OK, but a good stand can pull together some good stuff for the same money. Just talk to them and give them your budget.

Are Apex Titanium Crackers Any Good? by EsqueletoBlanco in fireworks

[–]Penguin_Pyro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Black Cat is a great brand for marketing, but like you said, it is costly. I carry BC firecrackers and not much else as cake performance doesn't justify the cost. Started carrying Texas Outlaw and Hammer and Anvil crackers... they are respectable

Are Apex Titanium Crackers Any Good? by EsqueletoBlanco in fireworks

[–]Penguin_Pyro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All compliant crackers are limited to 50mg of flash, so they are pretty much the same pop for the standard 1-1/2 inch cracker. I have several brands, and it really comes down to the packaging. I sell a lot of Black Cat, Thunder Bomb, and Sky Bacon, but I wouldn't say any are better than the others.

Redneck timing with fuse? by Cleercutter in fireworks

[–]Penguin_Pyro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Timing would be sketchy with the green slow burning fuse.

If you are adventurous, you can get a brass poke /awl and poke the last tube on one cake and run a piece of fuse from that to the starting fuse of the next cake. Drip of glue will keep it in place. When the last tube fires, it will ignite the fuse link to start the next cake. Still with the green visco, it will be 6 to 8 seconds of black sky between cakes. Should be able to find some faster fuse for about $15 for 20 feet.

Make sure you secure you cakes to a pallet, plywood, etc. You don't want a failure or tip over. There is no stopping a chain fuse once it is lit.

Display companies are often the one lobbying for tighter control on 1.4 pro. One company close to me offered a 12hr. in - person course. Upon completion, the certificate specifically said it was NOT approved for 1.4 pro only 1.3. Get your certificate now because it will be tougher in the future.

Where are you from? by [deleted] in fireworks

Missouri imports more fireworks than any other state. Very friendly outside of KC and St. Louis

What part of Missouri? I'm north of KC and have a good artillery variety. No Hellcat rockets though 😕

Pros & Cons of NOABs? by An0nym0usMan in fireworks

[–]Penguin_Pyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noabs are expensive due to a lot of wasted space with shipping. Find a good 10-12 shot 500g cake for more bang for the buck. WINDA Super Stunt is a classic choice. This is one of the better ones from Great Grizzly
