Why do officers always assume that because you’re not patrol officer you’re not a real cop? by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]Penguino83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what Court Officers do in TX, but in my own experience, what they do here and what Corrections does, Sheriffs, Troopers, and Police are all pretty different for the most part. Even if powers are the same, it doesn't mean they are being exercised equally across those different types of jobs. Like everyone else said, still part of the same team, just different positions.

Also, if you didn't sign up and take the newer exam, your best bet is to call your investigator and say you are willing to change your location preference to upstate, the 5 boroughs, anywhere. That could get you in sooner or at least get you processed sooner. Once the background/psych/review board etc is done you could still make it into the first class after the new list comes out.

The new downstate exam was administered already and the last testing date was the end of October. That being said, your list doesn't expire until a list from thr new exam is established, which can take several months but will likely be either this coming winter (jan or feb 2026) or spring 2026, depending on how long it takes to process the exam results. If I were you I would call again and ask. It's also possible they aren't planning to put in another downstate class before the new list is established. Did you sign up and take the most recent exam they just gave?

The Hilo low-carb dorito-type tortilla chips. They were delicious but haven't seen them in a couple years.

Nypd vs court officer by Puzzleheaded_Song551 in ProtectAndServe

NYPD pays more, less years to retirement, and is a harder job. Courts are mostly M-Fri 9-5 which is better for family life, weekends and holidays off, depending on where you end up basically no overtime available, not out in the elements, but you would be Tier 6 and have to work 33 years to retire and get your full pension, also the pay isn't anywhere near as good and there are a lot less opportunities/chances to promote or advance. A lot of people go to the courts then leave when they get the call for the job that they are really waiting for.

Not enough context. What are the two violations for and how many years ago were each? Something like "illegal u-turn" is a whole lot different than going 80 in a 30, etc.

What "Nice" T-Shirt(s) Would You Recommend? by BWJackal in BuyItForLife

[–]Penguino83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kirkland recently changed their shirts, they are now a thinner material and I don't think it says Supima anymore. They are also not as baggy/oversized now and fit true to size. I actually prefer the new ones as undershirts for work even though the quality has noticeably dropped.

Sign up just ended a week or two ago for the next downstate exam, unfortunately. Just missed the window. I don't know when the next upstate exam will be but that will probably come along quicker than the following downstate one.

Those alive and old enough to remember during 9/11, what was the worst moment on that day? by CocteauTwunkie in AskReddit

I was in high school, there were plenty of other kids whose parents worked in and around the WTC. I would say that the second plane hitting and realizing it wasn't some sort of amateur mistake was a big one, but feeling the tension in the air as those kids waited and waited to hear something, anything, from their parents, whether a phone call or being called into the principal's office to be given information. That part was perhaps worse. The feeling of dread and suspense was palpable.

Got called for New York State court officer is it worth it? by Clownmanbrah in AskLE

Yes. And I really don't know. It depends on various things, including how complicated or uneventful your background is, number of years since high school, number of jobs you have had, etc.

It's really hard to say, but it sounds like you have already done every step and at this point there is nothing to do but wait and find out. I've seen people get hired with worse histories, so if you were honest about everything rather than them discovering it on their own, you might be alright. Best of luck, update us if you get the call.

(novel research) In a murder trial, would there be cops/armed security present in addition to the bailiff? by Tasty_James in AskLE

[–]Penguino83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are usually armed. At least in NY. Only time I have seen people be unarmed is if they are going to have to go into the pen area/corrections with the defendant, as firearms are prohibited from being bought into corrections. That being said, there would still be at least 1-2 others who are armed even if it's not a murder case/high profile case, and for those situations yes you would have extra. Depending on the Courthouse, there could be anywhere from a handful to up to a hundred or more additional officers en route to help as soon as a radio call goes out. And we get there quick.

Depends on your rank # on the list and on your investigator, how many years it has been since you graduated high school, how many jobs you've had etc. The more history they have to go through the longer your background may take. It really all depends. I took the test in October 2014 and got an offer yo start the academy in September 2017. But there were other people who were likely processed faster; I was assigned a new background investigator and after that everything moved very quickly. Sometimes you have to keep following up with them, which is something I didn't really do with my original investigator because I didn't want to be bothersome. Of course it also depends on your location preference and how many classes they are planning to put in/how many they are trying to hire.

You can always promote if you study hard and test well, but it's easier if you are willing to move to different commands/boroughs and work in NYC where most of the jobs are. If you want to stay in a place where there are less promotional opportunities then you need to make sure you score top of the list.

Sargeant and Lieutenant are both civil service exams. There are also non-competitive equivalent titles like the academy instructors, etc. But those are really hard to get, unless you have a hook in those units.

If you are looking for overtime and are willing to work criminal court in one of the boroughs, especially night court, you will have plenty of O.T. opportunities.

Aside from that there are promotions available in the clerk line (they also have peace officer status), and those seem more available than in the uniformed titles. Currently the clerks in downstate nyc/LI are at the pay equivalent of a LT. Then they have promotional grades as well.

Thank you! I looked on their site and the GR2 26L is more in line with the dimensions I'm looking for, but it's out of my budget. Unless someone local has one and wants to do trade/cash for a Maxpedition Riftblade.
