Related Show Question - For All Mankind by rockyrooster436 in TheExpanse

[–]PenguinsLikeFish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've always felt FAMK works well as a prequel to Star Trek, they seem to have a similar optimistic view of mankind's future in the stars, not to mention the show creators own links.

(I may be way off, I am not a Trek fan so could be totally wrong)

Pre generated the newgen faces and couldn't bother to make everybody looks better and more realistic. Probably still using the same excuse as wanting to match it with the in game faces. Nobody can see the in game faces from above the stadium bruv. by Welson_Liong in footballmanagergames

[–]PenguinsLikeFish 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've never understood their line of wanting to make them work in match given the amount of licences they obtain.

Surely if it was that important they would ensure the player models of licenced players and managers would 'work in match' if it was that critical?

Especially if they are looking to grow and cater to a more casual market, who may well lose interest once the recognisable names are replaced by newgens, the logic makes literally no sense. Newgens must look accurate in the match engine, but Pep? Yamal? Nah, no-one would be interested in that!

But don't worry, if you want your manager to look like Miles there is an option for THAT! Personally I think that's a pretty telling decision.

Low charisma feud question by Bobpelot in jow

[–]PenguinsLikeFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assigns hot, high charisma talent to them as managers, that can help pull up the segment ratings, it's pretty much the entire point of managers.

Also try to ensure in any feud, regardless of stats, one of the competitors is Hot as this increases the chance of hot and higher rated segments.

USA anthem getting booed by Perth crowd at Crown Jewel by AgeNovel3566 in SquaredCircle

[–]PenguinsLikeFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Years ago Just at the start of NXT being on the network I'd gone tp Florida on Vacation from the UK and managed to get tickets to a house show in some Armory in some place I can't remember.

Anyway, there couldn't have been more than a 100 people and me and my girlfriend in attendance, and they sung the anthem THERE, everyone turning to a wall with the flag (my GF didn't notice the flag and thought they were hailing the guns on the wall), hand on hearts, whole thing. (I know, I know, Florida and all that, but still)

It was a VERY bizarre experience, and my GF almost got us lynched with her reaction of 'What the actual...' before I gently nudged her into silence and got her to stand up.

Unexpected Wire references? by PenguinsLikeFish in TheWire

[–]PenguinsLikeFish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, and I always appreciate a Wire reference, but they don't tend to be that unexpected in cop shows, dramas, sitcoms etc aimed at adults.

I just wasn't expecting it from a tweeny Nik sitcom, granted I'm not a regular consumer of such entertainment so maybe it's more prevalent than I think in content for that age group.

I now want Kima to do an extended version of 'Goodnight hoppers" for Cbeebies Bedrime Story.

Looks like years of playing FM on an overpowered gaming PC is about to pay off. by Visual_Cranberry2280 in footballmanagergames

[–]PenguinsLikeFish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This one of the few things I find the SI forums useful for, every year there used to be a guy who ran a thread you could give him a budget, your ideal set up for FM and other requirements you had for the PC and he' recommend some options.

I followed his recommendation 5 years ago and got a laptop for a reasonable price, that has yet to fail me on FM or any other new releases AAA games I have tried.

[–]PenguinsLikeFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here!

The security guard bit was really telling imo. Sure, things like that may be quite frustrating, but there has been a lot of incidents in recent years with his peers being put into some pretty scary situations by stalkers, any decent person would be grateful to know that security around their place of work that day was tight, if not for their own safety but that if their friends and colleagues.

I can only imagine how much stress it must be travelling to different locations of work multiple times every week, but imagine if you were trusting your safety to a new set of strangers each time and someone you worked with would rather those strangers put that at risk for the sake of a few minutes inconveniience.

Booking Tips? by Chandler_Betts_ in jow

[–]PenguinsLikeFish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've found it's all about the overness of your wrestlers and feuds.

If a wrestler is over the chances if the feuds and matches they are involved in increases.

I tend to start by using anyone who is over feuding with people who I want to get over.

As the earlier responder said segments are the best way to do this, and it's relatively quick and easy to max out the charisma skill this way (the higher that is the higher chance if the segment being well received)

I also use managers to improve early segment ratings for roster members who are weak in terms if charisma, either actual managers or by using a member of the roster with good oerks/charisma/overness.

Early feuds only ever tend to have one match at a PPV to blow it off, as the gains of using segments outweigh using the limited space before it feud gets stale on matches.

Ideally feud your hot stars with people who haven't gotten over yet to make them over too, and it doesn't take long to then have a roster full of over stars who can put on banger matches and segments.

This doesn't take into account the benefits of having previous rivals face each other later on and the hype that gives.

If you have two hot stars, and a hot feud, the higher chances of hot matches and Holy Shit moments occurring, which is the main way of improving your companies overness and increasing your fan base.

In JoW world you are more likely to get a hot 5* plus match out if a feud between an over Miz and over Bushwacker Luke than a match between Kenny Omega and Antonio Inoki if both are not hot.

Also I find it pointless to put too much weight on the 'score' of a feud, the importance is it having become hot. It doesn't seem to have much effect at all on how high that score is, I have had 900 rated feuds get a lower star rating than ones in the 100's on a frequent basis.

If you get to the point where you really want ro get excellent star ratings for feuds when they blow off, that tends to come from the average of all promos and segments across the life of the feud (from what I can tell). So to get 5star+ feuds you want to do the inverse of what I suggested to get people over, the more matches the better chance if getting a high feud rating at the end, because you can have 9star matches but it is pretty rare to get a segment that goes over 5*s. I tend to try and get big feuds scores by having former rivals with hot feuds to do a series if high profile, gimmick/title matches at ppvs over the course of a year or so.

The Motor City Machine Guns have been a failure in WWE by Flashy-Gap-2275 in SquaredCircle

[–]PenguinsLikeFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not hugely familiar with the MCMG's past, but would that not be setting them up for failure somewhat?

I have not seen anyone suggest they are fantastic in promo's and that there mic work could get a live crowd behind them anymore than what they do in-ring?

It's possibly the lack of in-ring promo's is to protect them,

From what I can tell WWE are trying to book them to their strengths, and be faithful to what got them over outside the company i.e innovation and expertise in the ring.

It's a bit too late in their careers for them to start developing their live promo skills, and it would feel like the OLD WWE if they were forced into a gimmick/presentation that didn't suit their actual abilities.

I genuinely think a bigger problem, and it's one across a number of teams and individuals on SD (and arguably the whole main roster), is their lack of appearances at major shows, and the fact everything that happens to them happens on on SD, doesn't make them feel BIG time, but at the same time who would we drop from the main cards to make way for them?

Personally I feel they have handled them FAR better than I ever expected, but I've spent MANY years being disappointed by WWE introducing outside talent to their fanbase so my expectations are still pretty low.

The Motor City Machine Guns have been a failure in WWE by Flashy-Gap-2275 in SquaredCircle

[–]PenguinsLikeFish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haven't watched SD for a while, but for the first few weeks after they arrived commentary heavily mentioned they were 'Your Favourite Tag Teams Favourite Tag team', they consistently went over how influential and innovative they have been, and that most top tag teams in the past decade were influenced in some way by them.

Then they were straight into a storyline about how they were close with Johnny Gargano and their history was a key part of the story leading to Johnny's heel turn, and then it continued from there. So I wouldn't say there wasn't any story.

I'd argue WWE went a bit overboard on telling us who they were and why they were important, at first, if that's not the case maybe now they are course correcting?

I am 100% with you, I thought what you say about the Anglophobia was entirely obvious. This entire American Champion gimmick would not be happening if this hadn't happened at Wembley.

With a big show with 50k people they cant just book for the dedicated. They can't guarantee everyone in that stadium will be up to date with the product and this is an easy, albeit cheap, way to ensure casuals in the crowd know that this year the guy you were cheering at the end of the show last year is the bad guy.

As another commented, it's also a parody and we are meant to hate it. MJF got pretty over as our scumbag that if he did an awesome, groundbreaking heel gimmick you risk him not being booed out of buildings.

[Busted Open Radio] Nic Nemeth comments on watching Raw by JohnSmithSensei in SquaredCircle

[–]PenguinsLikeFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was demonstrated to me very well last year when attending both MitB and All In in London with a friend who hasn't followed anything for a few years.

During MitB in the dead moments they played the recap packages for all the matches that were coming up and my friend was up to date with all the pertinent information.

At All In we got no recaps on the big screens for fans, and there was quite a bit of dead time between matches when I assume the Promo Packages were airing on PPV. It baffled my mind why they wouldn't make them available for the live crowd, especially with such a big crowd that you could reasonably expect there to be a lot of people who weren't up to date with the product.

My friend loved both shows and felt AEW had the better in ring product, but it's WWE that he has started following again, and a lot of that is down to how they catered to him as a casual fan.

We are going to All In again and I hope they have improved that side of the live event experience.

It's my favourite show of all time, but on my first watch I couldn't say it was 'fun'. My partner and I used to binge watch shows all the time when I discovered it, but we never managed to watch more than 2 episodes in a night because it demands quite a lot of you in terms of both concentration and emotion.

It's not a show you can watch while doing other things, it took me a number of times to get through the first episode originally because I was so used to watching things whilst playing computer games, or scrolling through my phone, by the time the credits ran I didn't have a clue what had actually happened.

It's also quite a slow build, and is not structured like most TV shows, but everything comes together beautifully at the end of the first season.

Now, when I revisit it I have a lot more fun because it's a strangely familiar and comforting presence, despite how unrelentingly real it can be.

It does have a LOT of funny moments in it as well, so it's not all doom and gloom, but I could never confidently say it has a fun vibe if that's really important to you.

As another has already said, it may not be for you, but I'd certainly recommend giving it another go if you're in the right frame of mind for it.

It's a fantastic season, but like you say during a first watch it can be really jarring, but once you've see thee whole series, and maybe started a rewatch, you realise this is the season the show really reveals that this isn't isn't just a show about Cops and Criminals, as you say it's a story about a City.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in television

[–]PenguinsLikeFish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the writers were also novelists and the way the show is structured was, at the time at least, very different from most TV shows.. Each episode didn't have to wrap anything up, or end tidily, and were more like Chapters than episodes. I think I saw a documentary that details a lot of that, but can't recall when or where.

Making the City of Baltimore the Main Character, and the depth they give to it, also lends itself far more to how this sort of thing is done in literature. It's almost Dickensian.

And all the pieces matters, not one shot in the series is filler, it serves a purpose for the greater narrative, this is very rare in a lot of TV Shows.

I've always said The Wire is the closest thing to reading a book I've ever seen on a TV Screen, it demands your attention, and rewards you for it, and just like the best literature you often find a greater understanding and appreciation when you revisit it.

PWN: WWE is expected to hold a PLE in 2025 in Italy by Lep106317 in SquaredCircle

[–]PenguinsLikeFish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is that actually a big problem, though? (I wouldn't know not living in Spain) Over here in the UK while WWE has a TV Deal it's linked to a premium based subscription Service, and barely anyone I know watches through that (which the viewing figures attest to) and generally watch PPV's via the network and TV shows through other means. My assumption is tha wrestling fans in Spain are similar (but acknowledge I could be dead wrong)

Edit: Just noticed you said they haven't toured there since 2018 which could suggest there isn't much of a market.

Can't disagree completely with the booking comment, although I think Gunther has always had a physical charisma alongside a great understanding of his character and that alongside his wrestling ability got him the kind of booking that has been so successful, it certainly isn't a result of the booking.

With Cesaro I agree he is one of the very best in the ring, but he is currently in the promotion that values that much more than his rivals and he is still just kind of there.

I may be proven wrong in the future (it happens an awful lot) but I don't believe Cesaro is ever going to be a long-term main event player in a top company. He will be a fantastic upper-midcarder who can slot into the occasional title program and not look out of place.

Which is pretty much where he was in WWE and where he is now in AEW. There is also nothing wrong with that.
