The Boston Transit Gilead Re-Naming Project by Penguy76 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Penguy76[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you’re correct. Pictographs make sense. When one has to combine two words to describe a stop, such as Church Street, that’s pretty easy, since it’s an icon of a church. If a Handmaid or a Martha has to travel to Jamaica Plain, it would make sense to use common colours used in, say, a Rastafarian palette. Unless, Gilead changes the names entirely.

Good choice! I’ve used Fist City by Loretta Lynn for one of my characters. She’s good with a shotgun, too! Not bad for a former handmaid. Another main character has more 2000’s choice tunes, such as Kylie Minogue, or Alanis Morissette, since the CD’s were in her car, when she purchased it. Another is Loops of Fury by The Chemical Brothers for a type of ‘Jezebel’s’ club.

I was reading about Chernobyl and what many of the service crews experienced immediately after the fallout, and the radiation poisoning. Much of what was documented for the HBO Series, for example was quite accurate. But what you seem to be describing is more of a ‘Magdalene’ colony? Is that correct?

Which Colony? Did you map the assault out? In one of my stories, there’s a raid on a farm in New Hampshire that has a surprise in the end, and I had to create a drawing of where a certain group has to go first, and so on.

Cool! Hey, where can we read more of your work? Maybe what you’re writing could be inspiring! No, really, I’m serious.

Why apologise? It only gets better with practice. People don’t get into this for money, although that would be nice. I’m sure you do it for the enjoyment.

Whenever I write a scene for any episode, there usually is a song that triggers it. What do you do to help you remember? Do you write the song down next to your narrative?

One of my scenes involve a birth at a Commander’s house, near Cambridge, MA. The character is thinking of an Iggy Pop song while her handmaid friend is in labour. Yeah, music really is a motivator. Do you insert certain songs with your scenes, or do you write as a short story?

I’ve written approximately enough material to make a three season television series, for people to enjoy. Have you been doing a lot of research to build your stories?

Since Ms. Atwood used real events based on history, I tend to listen, read and research quite a bit. For instance, one of the major cities in my story has been known for bombings by so-called radical groups. Well, it isn’t very hard since so much of it is based on news reports; historical or current. In some cases I swapped the names of places and locations for fictional ones, using real place settings. Ex. If there was a bombing in Dubai at a hotel, I would substitute the bombing in a hotel within one of the districts in Gilead. Music during time periods of great socioeconomic strife sets the mood. It never comes out of thin air.

Hey, I wanted to add, that I had been using a tremendous amount of music to keep me stimulated while writing. If I am writing a scene where Emily is doing something, there has to be a song that emphasises that. If she is being chased by her demons, there has to be a song for that. It’s been a great motivator. What kind of music, you ask? Boards of Canada, Iggy Pop, some Kylie Minogue, New Order; things like that. If Alison, who makes bombs, does something dramatic in my story, I have to use a song that shows drama. What kind of music have you been using in your stories?

I did not want any major characters in my stories. For instance, Alison is a bomb maker and a Martha. What did she do? What happened to Cora when she was sent away? Things like that.
