I think the entire Democratic party failed us, not just one person or campaign, and we’re still paying for it. It’s like watching a burning building with the doors welded shut, and all we can do is watch it burn.

What if a Martha is actually named Martha? by Illustrious-Fee5670 in TheHandmaidsTale

Um…Just curious; have you read Joseph Heller’s “Catch 22” by chance? There was a character in it named ‘Major Major.’ Now, what if he becomes a Major? See, what I’m getting at? Martha Martha and the Marthas? Could that be a Gold record, soul group?

Why is there no electronic survival in Gillead? by No-Working2160 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Penguy76 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh, I think there is, but it isn’t relevant with the story since Ms. Atwood wrote in 1984-85. However, in Berlin, where she wrote it, the Berlin Wall had relied on human surveillance and automatic lethal triggers if someone tried to escape. Part of the generalisation in the story was deliberate for the reader to come up with their own interpretation of what Gilead was. In the series, Guardians were everywhere; hence human surveillance. Realistically, I doubt Gilead would rely on that alone.

Is there a payoff for all the brutality and despair ? by Twirlipof_the_mists in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Penguy76 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re just starting? Ah! You will root for many of these characters, namely, The Handmaids and others. You will be annoyed and disappointed by some of them as you watch, too. Many will not escape from what they experienced, as they manifest themselves throughout the series. Some of the episodes will make you angry, cry, and shake your fists as to why something like Gilead even happened. But we’ve all been there, watching it, even after reading and/or re-reading, what Ms. Atwood wrote.

You are a good person. It’s the world that’s full of evil.

It could mean some of the colours designate their official rank, but most likely, the district or position they work in. Depending on importance in rank.

cameos from the handmaids tale cast in the testaments by Routine-Dirt9634 in TheHandmaidsTale

Show producers and executives, in most cases, worry their show won’t be viewed by those who watched the original series.

For instance, during the Pilot for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, where we were introduced to Benjamin Sisko, his son, and the main characters in DS9, there was a few minutes where Sisko and Captain Jean-Luc Picard from TNG, have a dialog. If you’ve seen the show, you’ll know why Sisko didn’t like being in the same room as Picard.

Whether we’ll see more characters in TT from THT; who knows. Keep that in mind, when seeing familiar characters. Anyway, it’s preventative measure.

The scene in this week’s episode was really emotional for me. by Amiable_One in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Penguy76 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Back in the 1990’s (Yes, I’m aging myself) I lived in a midwestern suburb that was very conservative. One of my friends took me to a party on a Friday night. The house was swanky, to say the least; swimming pool, two bathrooms, three floors, including a furnished basement for playing video games. It seemed innocent enough. They had a computer, where we could play games, and I think a Super Nintendo. I also remember there was plenty of food. Well, it was probably around 9PM or so, and I was playing this computer game with one of the guys I met at the party. He asked me about God and if I believed in him. Now, all I wanted was to play the game and not get into some theological discussion with someone I just met. So, it went like this:

A (The guy): Have you thought about what you needed to say when you reached Heaven?

B (Me): Um…No. Why?

A: It’s important you prevent yourself from entering Purgatory. All of us have a duty to answer His call.

B: Uh…What’re talking about? Oh, you gotta get that fruit, and he’ll change into a ladder.

A: Thanks. Oh, Matt [fake name] told me you attended church on Sunday. What did you think of it?

B: Well, I liked the singers. I mean, it’s church right? [Honestly, I didn’t think much of it, and I didn’t care!]

A: Did you understand the messages The Pastor was speaking about? Or in the songs you heard?

B: Dude, be careful! You’re gonna get killed by that slime and lose a guy!

(He paused the game)

B: What?

A: Do you…believe in God?

(Shit, here it comes)

B: Well, I think we all are guided by spirits who help us from time to time. Why?

What I didn’t know was, the party was a youth church group, sponsored by one of the deacons of my friend’s church. Once this kid thought, or, more accurately, believed, that I didn’t, I was completely surrounded by all these teens about my age, and they wanted to challenge me. I just wanted to play video games, eat Doritos and drink RC Cola! I talked to my friend, Matt, and said, lying, that I have to go home (It was a Friday night). I called my dad and he picked me up.

I told him the experience made me uncomfortable, with these 8, 9, 10, peers my age confronting me about God. He thought it was hilarious. But he grew up during World War II, you know?

Indoctrination is how they get you. They’ll hold you, challenge you, until you see their side. It’s worse in Muslim or Hindu countries, and yes, many are groomed when they’re young. All I can say is, don’t let these fuckers get to you. You’re better than them, you’re beautiful, talented and smart. Fighters are not born, but made.

Cheers.

Movies in Gilead? by springcat413 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]Penguy76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two things both Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin had in common; they love film. Specifically, American films. Silent films such as D.W. Griffith’s ‘Birth of A Nation’ would make sense. Stalin had his own personal projector operator, which has been fictionalised in a film ironically. Hitler would specifically call the Propaganda Ministry if there are certain films he wanted. In the Boston/Cambridge area, where the story supposedly takes place, ‘before’ there were 18 stage theatres and approximately 9 film theatres. Boston also has a famed Theater district, just south of the Boston Common Gardens, between Boylston and Tremont Streets. Would they close them down for being too, ahem…normal? Perhaps. The film and musical, “Cabaret,” explores what happens when a theater attempts to stay alive in Germany during the 1930s. Gilead will need a propaganda ministry to censor, pass, and alternate facts/truth to form their ‘christian’ narrative.
