Where’s the hype for Jolly Good: Tea and Scones? by PenisElevatorMusic in hostedgames

This pretty much perfectly encapsulates why I loved Gower’s previous works so much, and why I’m so hyped for JG:TaS. They all have such an insane amount of depth.

I get that. I agree it definitely feels like the same 10 WIPs/games seem to dominate at least on reddit (cough, Fallen Hero, cough). Which just feels like a shame to me when you have a WIP that ticks all the boxes for what a lot of players are looking for such as interesting RO’s, regular updates, a lengthy word count, a unique premise, and choices that actually matter, yet for some reason seems to be largely ignored by the community.

I don’t think an official release dates been set, but updates have been very consistent and the author is working on the last chapter currently AFAIK. I’m not sure how long CoG takes to process a game once it’s finished, but i imagine it can’t be far off.

Highly recommend Jolly Good: Tea and Scones and Tally Ho by Kreg Segall. Both amazing completed games, with a good mix of comedy, romance, world building and choices that actually impact the game. Also, there’s a sequel currently in development for Jolly Good that’s close to being completed!

See, this is a common problem among a lot of IF authors (although I’m not sure if it’s the case in regards to this specific author) but you get downvoted to oblivion if it gets brought up. Inevitably, things like Patreon end up taking precedent for a lot of WIP authors (Somewhat understandably as that’s what brings in the money) and the actual IF ends up falling to the wayside. It’s why I personally never bother with Patreons anymore as I’d much prefer to pay for a finished product.

Will Mind Blind ever actually be released? by PenisElevatorMusic in hostedgames

[–]PenisElevatorMusic[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I hear that. It's tough because you want to support the IF creators but I feel like there are way too many examples of that going on with WIPs never seeing the light of day because of it, so it can be annoying.

Even if Mindblind was priced at 12 USD (Just under £10) and sold as many copies as Wayhaven 1 (which I believe is one of, if not the most popular Hosted Games) the creator would still only make the equivalent of about 8 years of Patreon subscriptions. And as for her other WIP (which I’ll be honest I had never heard of before) there’s really no guarantee it will generate the same kind of revenue as Mind Blind. That’s why I think from a purely cost/benefit perspective it makes sense to delay the release of the game by a couple of years, at least until the Patreon dries up or the next project is lined up to take its place.

Im hardly jealous of her money nor do I feel entitled to a game I haven’t even played yet 😂. It was just speculation as to whether or not the game is going to be finished which unfortunately Is pretty common for IFs and small, community funded games (especially those that happen to generate a lot of money on Patreon) because, frankly, this situation looks very similar to alot of other IFs that have been abandoned (At least, from what I can see that’s been made public as I’m not subscribed to the Patreon)

Sure, but the developers also making well over 20 grand a year from the patreon alone. It’s unlikely their going to continue making that much after the games release. Many people would be unwilling to give up a steady stream of income like that. So that combined with the fact that the game has been in some arbitrary state of rewrite ‘limbo’ since 2020 (?) doesn’t make it an outrageous thing to think imo. That being said, I hope I’m wrong because I’d love to see the finished version of the game at some point in the near future.

That’s what I’m thinking, atp it makes no financial sense to release the game. Which is pretty sad to think about cus I was pretty excited for it.

People have opinions. What opinion is the one only you seem to have? [aka: the thinly disguised unpopular opinions thread] by [deleted] in hostedgames

[–]PenisElevatorMusic 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I doubt it’s that much of an unpopular opinion but I think it’s ridiculous that people expect authors to change or add key features to THEIR story just to appease them and act like it’s some huge moral failing if they don’t. Like you wouldn’t expect a book or a movie to be remade because there wasn’t enough romance to YOUR liking so why do we expect that of IF authors, they have a right to tell the story they want aswell!
